Road Home Episode 22 Recap

**SPOILER ALERT**

TL;DR (Quick Overview)

A full day of sightseeing between Mingyu and Duan Rou slowly warms into something real, while Yanchen and Gui Xiao settle deeper into married comfort. Between a glass bridge, a nerve-wracking rope crossing, and an overnight camp under the stars, this episode dedicates itself entirely to watching two shy, guarded people fall for each other at their own pace.

A Camel, and a Careful Distance

Mingyu takes Duan Rou sightseeing, and when she declines his offer of a shopping mall in favour of natural scenery, he brings her to try camel riding for the first time. Struggling to climb on, she asks pointedly if he plans to offer his hand, and he explains, stiffly, that it isn’t reluctance, he simply wants to maintain a respectful distance.

When she reminds him he’s been married before, he clarifies that was different, his wife, and he doesn’t want to cross any inappropriate line now. She tells him plainly to lift his hand, and he finally does, helping her up before leading the camel on a walk.

A Reunion, and a Confession Overheard

Yanchen and Gui Xiao catch up to them, and Gui Xiao’s impressed Yanchen guessed correctly they’d be here first, exactly where tourists always go. Wanting to talk privately, the men split off in one car while the women take another, and Yanchen brings up something Mingyu admitted before the trip, that he does like Duan Rou, though he doesn’t think he deserves her.

Meanwhile, Gui Xiao asks Duan Rou directly what she makes of him, and Duan Rou admits she doesn’t think he’s interested, he didn’t even offer his hand earlier. Gui Xiao corrects her, revealing that’s exactly the reason she brought her along in the first place, so they could properly meet.

A Glass Bridge, and a Rope Crossing

They arrive at a stunning mountain pass connected by a glass-bottomed bridge. Yanchen walks Gui Xiao across first, holding her tightly through her fear of heights. When Mingyu asks Duan Rou if she wants to cross too, she initially refuses, afraid of heights herself, but he reassures her he’ll be right there, and she agrees to try the rope-and-plank version instead.

Genuinely terrified, she takes his offered hand, and they walk it slowly together, the whole thing beautifully shot. Halfway across, he encourages her to actually look at the view rather than just focus on her fear, insisting it would be a shame to miss it.

She finally does, taking in the scenery properly for the first time, while he watches her rather than the view himself. She admits she had no idea it was this beautiful out here. He tells her that the first time he visited, he hadn’t thought so either, but this time, he agrees completely, all while looking straight at her.

A Night Under the Stars

At a cliffside lookout, Gui Xiao wonders if Yanchen wants to visit the rest of his old team since they’re so close to Qining, and rather than head home, clearly enjoying himself, he invites any off-duty members to join them for an overnight camp and barbecue instead. The team, predictably, can’t resist teasing their Captain Qin about Duan Rou being his potential girlfriend, and his blushing, flustered reaction is thoroughly endearing.

Mingyu sets up Duan Rou’s tent with real care, and when she wakes from a nap to find him making her bed, she admits no one’s ever done that for her before. Their conversation turns personal, though when he starts talking about his son, she redirects him toward his school days instead.

He admits he was only an average student until his final year, when real effort finally paid off, and she reflects that she was the opposite, tightly wound and anxious through school, only to burn out and relax completely by senior year, somehow still doing fine regardless.

A Married Coupleโ€™s Kiss

Meanwhile, Yanchen and Gui Xiao settle into their own tent, speculating about what Mingyu and Duan Rou might be discussing nearby. She asks for a kiss again, and though he’s initially cautious given how close the rest of the team is camped, she points out plainly they’re already married, no need to hide. They kiss.

Caught in the Act, Twice

The team, mischievous as ever, tries sneaking up on both captains’ tents simultaneously, only for both men to hear them coming and scare them off right back. The boys scatter, pretending to be busy with anything else, and Mingyu jokes about running extra training, though they protest it’s their day off.

Yanchen quietly reminds Mingyu to be mindful of how much time he’s spending alone in a tent with a single woman. Saying goodnight, Yanchen retreats to sit by the fire alone, a small smile lingering as he replays the day. Mingyu, similarly unable to sleep, ends up talking with Duan Rou again, this time settling comfortably into simply not needing to fill every silence, admitting he finds it relaxing just to hear her voice nearby.

A Team’s Cheeky Eavesdropping

Three of the younger officers try eavesdropping on Mingyu and Duan Rou’s conversation from a neighbouring tent, and Mingyu catches them at it, flicking stones to warn them off every time they peek. Eventually giving up, they call out a teasing goodnight to their captain, urging him to enjoy himself.

A Morning Departure

The next morning, the team’s already gone, called away on a night mission and packed up without waking anyone. Duan Rou helps Mingyu load the car, struck by how demanding his job actually is now that she’s seen it firsthand.

In the other tent, Gui Xiao wakes to a peaceful morning with Yanchen, admitting she understands his job completely, but misses him regardless. He tells her, quietly, that every time he thinks of her while away, guilt follows right behind it.

A Prediction, Correctly Made

Gui Xiao wants to head out and freshen up, but Yanchen tells her to wait, reasoning that Mingyu and Duan Rou need this time to keep getting to know each other properly. When Duan Rou points out it’s already nine and they still haven’t emerged, Mingyu simply suggests leaving them be and getting breakfast instead.

Gui Xiao’s impressed Yanchen predicted Mingyu’s exact behaviour so precisely, and he explains simply, years of shared life-and-death situations together means knowing someone’s next move almost instinctively.

A Growing Connection

Arriving in the city, Duan Rou mentions wanting to see the train station, curious how each one differs from province to province, each drawing a different mix of travellers and locals. Mingyu’s happy to take her, and she tells him that’s exactly why they get along so well. Confused, he asks what she means.

Road Home Episode 22 Recap: My Thoughts

I really enjoyed this episode. It was just relaxing, which is unusual for a drama, and the whole thing was built entirely around watching Mingyu and Duan Rou slowly get to know each other, a man who doesn’t quite know how to communicate with women paired against a woman who’s straightforward and completely confident in herself. I loved that they dedicated a full episode to this rather than rushing it, it made the connection feel believable.

Watching the team tease Mingyu over his inexperience was so well done too, and the cinematography throughout, the glass bridge, the desert drive, the cliffside barbecue, the overnight camping, all of it was absolutely stunning.

That rope-crossing scene where Duan Rou was completely terrified was handled beautifully, and you could see exactly how much courage she found simply because he was there encouraging her. I loved that line too, him admitting he hadn’t thought the scenery was beautiful the first time he saw it, but this time, he did.

I also really appreciated watching how well Yanchen knows Mingyu, brothers in arms who’ve served together for years, understanding each other’s next move without needing to ask. Seeing him so comfortable predicting exactly what his friend would do was such a nice touch.

I’m loving this whole wingman, wing-woman arc, and I think it worked beautifully. Mingyu’s awkwardness set against Duan Rou’s total ease is such a great contrast, and yet you can already tell these two would make a great couple.
