Road Home Episode 13 Recap
**SPOILER ALERT**
Table of Contents
TL;DR (Quick Overview)
Yanchen defuses one of the tensest bombs of the series alone, then comes home to a feverish, terrified Gui Xiao who’s finally had enough of waiting in the dark. A tearful proposal, a text to her mother, and a heartfelt reveal about his old captain’s death mark real, irreversible progress, and the whole team practically welcomes her into the family.
A Blind Disarmament
At the mall, the captured suspect refuses to reveal the exact time of detonation, forcing Yanchen to work entirely blind. Commissioner Du suggests bringing in the man’s known accomplices, but it’s useless, only this one man actually knows the timeline.
Yanchen strips off his heavy EOD suit entirely, reasoning that if the blast is powerful enough to level the building, the suit offers no real protection anyway, and its bulk would keep him from fitting through the narrow ventilation shaft leading to the device.
A reconnaissance robot could theoretically reach it, but nothing built to actually disarm a bomb this size can, so he goes in alone. Inside, he finds it: massive, rigged with an anti-tamper mechanism, running on a fixed timer, and completely immovable.
A Sleepless Night
Back at the hotel, Gui Xiao tosses restlessly, unable to shake her unease. She calls her cousin, who offers what comfort she can, loving someone in this line of work means having a strong heart, since half of him will always belong to the country, and only half to the family waiting at home. It doesn’t fully settle her stomach, twisted with real physical stress, and she takes some medicine before curling back into bed.
A Race Against the Clock
Back at the police station, the suspect keeps glancing nervously at the wall clock, and police leadership, reading it as a sign detonation is close, urge Mingyu to pull Yanchen out immediately.
He refuses, insisting cutting power now would endanger critical ICU patients at the nearby hospital who can’t be evacuated in time. Methodically searching for a bypass wire, he stays put even as the tension in the room becomes almost unbearable.
A Successful Defusal
Just before time runs out, Yanchen finds and cuts the correct wire. The bomb goes silent. He directs Mingyu to bring a vehicle so the device can be transported three kilometres outside the city and safely buried in a deep pit for controlled disposal.
The suspect, stunned it never went off, watches in disbelief as Commissioner Du calmly informs him they now have plenty of time to hear his full confession. Yanchen hands the dismantled shell over to forensics, certain a bomb this sophisticated couldn’t have been built by one man alone, and insists the investigation dig deeper.
A Confession, and a Quiet Realization
Back at the station, Commissioner Du checks Yanchen over physically, admitting he’d only wanted him present to witness the operation and find some personal closure over his former captain’s death, never expecting Yanchen to actually go in and disarm the device himself. Yanchen tells him plainly it felt like fate, this was always going to be his to handle, and he’ll write the full report himself.
A Fever in the Night
Realizing Gao Hai never properly explained the situation to Gui Xiao, Yanchen rushes straight back to the hotel. He finds her asleep, but burning up, a fever climbing high. He runs out to a nearby pharmacy for medicine and a thermometer, then spends the rest of the night carefully tending to her, feeding her water and medicine, wiping her down with a cool, damp towel until she finally settles into peaceful sleep.
Gui Xiao’s Breaking Point
Waking the next morning to find him asleep on the sofa beside her bed, she’s overwhelmed, kneeling beside him in tears. He wakes and immediately apologizes for rushing off without any warning.
She admits, through tears, just how frightened she’d been through the night, confessing that for the first time in their relationship, she’d actually had to sit and wait for him, and she simply hadn’t known how to cope with that kind of helplessness.

No Name Spoken
He explains gently that officers are always asked for last words before disarming a bomb like that, and he’d deliberately never mentioned her name, terrified that leaving something behind would trap her, force her into visiting his grave every year, unable to ever truly move on.
But she doesn’t want that kind of protection, she wants to be the one who’s mentioned, the one who can legally claim him, organize things properly, be his wife in every sense that matters. Without hesitation, she tells him they’re getting married the moment they’re back in Beijing.
Her father’s disapproval doesn’t matter anymore, his family’s reservations don’t matter, ten years apart is already ten years she refuses to let turn into regret. He doesn’t answer right away, and she pushes gently, so, what do you think?
Official, and Blessed
Lying back down together, she pulls out her phone and texts her mother the news, receiving warm blessings in return almost instantly. Turning to Yanchen, she tells him to text his mother too, and he does, showing her the message once it’s sent. It’s official now.

The Truth About Qining
Later, while he showers, she asks through the door if something happened back in Qining before he left that she should know about. He comes out and finally tells her everything, how he’d been offered a choice of three postings after graduation, and chose Qining specifically because one of the unit leaders had needed someone reliable by his side.
How his captain later died during an operation targeting men Yanchen himself had originally helped arrest, a death that left him convinced, however irrationally, that the man had died in his place. That guilt was exactly why he’d tried to resign.
She asks if there’s anything else she should know, and he says no, she’s happy with that. He mentions the team wants to properly meet her, and she points out they already met once, to which he reminds her, gently, that last time she’d found them terrifying, mostly because he’d been the one yelling at her that day.
Meeting the Team
She dresses up properly for the occasion, and they grab food beforehand, knowing his team will inevitably want to celebrate however chaotically they can manage. Walking into the canteen in sunglasses, he’s got real captain energy radiating off him, and the whole unit’s clearly thrilled to finally welcome her properly, offering her sparkling water the moment she walks in.
A Five-Kilometre Tradition
In high spirits, the team challenges him to a weighted five-kilometre run, Gui Xiao serving as the designated load. She sheds her heavy coat eagerly, playing along completely, and he lifts her onto his back, unbuttoning his collar before charging across the field.
Despite joking that she’s underweight for someone her height, he completes the full five kilometres in under twenty minutes, the exact benchmark expected of a former captain, to a chorus of triumphant cheers from his SWAT brothers.
Road Home Episode 13 Recap: My Thoughts
This episode was all about closure. It seems Yanchen has carried real guilt over what happened to his former captain, a man who essentially stood in for another leader that day, and by finally apprehending these criminals and disarming an incredibly large bomb himself, he feels like he’s done what he can, enough to genuinely start moving forward.
The scene where she wakes up and realizes Yanchen’s home safe, dropping to her knees, just staring at him in pure relief, was so believable. Her tears felt completely real, and you could sense just how relieved she was, while he tried to console her, clearly moved himself watching this woman so thoroughly worried about him. Great acting from both of them here.
The third major thread in this episode, and probably the most important, is the two of them agreeing to get married. I appreciated that there was no overly elaborate, cinematic proposal, it was simply an opportunity seized in the moment, and I loved that it came from her specifically.
It shows she’s made up her mind completely, she’s never letting this chance slip away again, and she’s committed to being with him for good. Neither of them has been with anyone else in the ten years they’ve been apart, and reconnecting now, under these exact circumstances, feels genuinely fitting.
