TL;DR (Quick Overview)
A spontaneous road trip to surprise Yanchen turns into an accidental setup between Mingyu and Duan Rou, giving us the show’s most promising second-couple pairing yet. Between Gui Xiao and Yanchen settling comfortably into married life and a sweet flashback revealing just how observant he’s always been, this episode is pure, well-earned domestic bliss.
A New Assignment, Fresh Off the Paperwork
Straight after registering their marriage, Yanchen departs for Gaihong to introduce himself to a new team, quickly deployed to a major excavation site assisting Mr. Shen. The dig has unearthed all kinds of leftover wartime explosives, and with such a volume to safely dispose of, expertise is critical, exactly why Captain Lu’s been called in.
The problem is his newly assigned recruits are all brand new, none of them equipped to handle a job this size, so he plans to request additional manpower from Qining and stay on-site in the meantime.
A Devoted Wife, Bragging Rights and All
At a business lunch, Gui Xiao steps away to take a call, and when her clients tease her for jumping every time he calls, Duan Rou explains on her behalf, he’s a SWAT officer currently deployed in the mountains.
Reception is poor and he sometimes has to drive kilometres away or climb to a mountaintop just to get enough signal for a call. Duan Rou looks visibly proud explaining it, and even the other women at the table are impressed.

A Road Trip Proposed
After the call, missing him too much to wait, Gui Xiao proposes a road trip to Duan Rou, pointing out Gaihong’s barely thirty minutes from Qining, meaning she could meet Mingyu too. Duan Rou gets flustered immediately, insisting there’s no need, though Gui Xiao points out they already talk weekly about Xiaonan’s schooling, so meeting properly only makes sense. She talks her into it anyway.
Calling Yanchen, the connection actually holds long enough for her to share the plan, and though he worries about the road trip being risky, the call cuts out before he can finish, though he’s clearly happy regardless.
A Surprise Set in Motion
On the drive, Gui Xiao mentions that Mingyu happens to have the same day off, and since he doesn’t know they’re coming, it’ll be a genuine surprise. Meanwhile, back at Yanchen’s dorm, Mingyu grumbles about being dragged out on his day off just to help clean, until Yanchen mentions Gui Xiao’s bringing a friend for him to meet.
Mingyu balks immediately, insisting he isn’t ready to meet anyone, and when Yanchen asks if he plans to stay single forever, he admits, half-defeated, that’s not what he wants either, he’s just not ready. Yanchen assures him it’ll be fine regardless.
A Reunion at the Roadside
They meet at a detour marked by a large sign reading “Baby,” and Gui Xiao runs straight out of the car into Yanchen’s arms. When Duan Rou steps out next, Mingyu realizes exactly who she is, and the introduction lands as awkwardly as expected, Mingyu clearly out of his depth around women. Yanchen insists on driving with his own wife into town, forcing Mingyu and Duan Rou into the other car together.
Hoping to nudge things along, Gui Xiao wonders aloud if the two might actually make a good match, and Yanchen points out the practical obstacle, Mingyu’s stationed in Qining with limited time off, making regular visits difficult.
Gui Xiao notes that sounds exactly like their own situation, and Yanchen clarifies the key difference, once his current mission wraps, he’s heading back to Tianwen, close enough to Beijing that he could drive back and forth daily if he wanted. Mingyu’s circumstance is genuinely harder.

An Awkward Drive
In the other car, Mingyu tries small talk, asking about Duan Rou’s job, and her clipped, noncommittal answers make him assume she’d rather not be bothered, so he goes quiet. When she asks why he’s stopped talking, he explains his reasoning, and she admits she simply has a sore throat.
Immediately worried, he offers to take her to a hospital, and she waves it off as nothing serious, already medicated. Distracted by the conversation, they miss a turn entirely and lose sight of Yanchen and Gui Xiao’s car ahead.
Three Strikes
Realizing they’ve lost the other car, Yanchen notes dryly that Mingyu’s clearly too distracted to pay attention. Once they finally reconvene outside the restaurant, Yanchen tells him he’s got three chances not to embarrass the SWAT team’s reputation today, and he’s already burned through the first by taking a wrong turn.
A Crash Course in Mingyu’s Love Life
Over lunch, conversation turns to marriage, and Mingyu explains his own history plainly, his first engagement was arranged and never happened, his second, to Xiaonan’s mother, moved fast, based mostly on practical compatibility, similar hometowns, comparable income, matched assets, nothing especially romantic about it.
Duan Rou, surprised he married someone he barely knew, asks if he wasn’t afraid it wouldn’t work, and he admits honestly, he doesn’t have much experience with relationships to begin with.
When Yanchen returns and bluntly explains Mingyu’s inexperience with women, Mingyu protests being embarrassed like that, and Yanchen offers to instead claim the opposite, that he has plenty of experience, which flusters him even further, having now been cornered on every possible front. He deflects by ordering more food.
A Private Lunch
Yanchen explains to Duan Rou that Mingyu’s simply trying to express gratitude for her care of Xiaonan the only way he knows how, since she won’t accept money, hence the extra food, and she accepts the gesture graciously.
Then Yanchen turns to Mingyu, pointing out he hasn’t seen his own wife in ages and would like to actually eat lunch alone with her. Mingyu, confused, assumed they’d all eat together, and only understands once Yanchen kicks him under the table. They split into separate tables.
A Match Worth Considering
Alone together, Gui Xiao tells Yanchen that Duan Rou was once engaged, though the wedding fell through when her fiancรฉ refused to sign a prenuptial agreement protecting her assets. She explains what Duan Rou actually wants in a partner, someone independent who doesn’t need constant attention, since her own job keeps her traveling roughly two hundred days a year, no interest in someone who needs hand-holding through daily chores or arguments. Gui Xiao thinks Mingyu might genuinely fit that description well.
Domestic Bliss
Back at the apartment, Yanchen dotes on Gui Xiao completely, cutting fruit, wiping her hands, washing her feet, while she keeps asking, over and over, if he misses her, and he keeps answering, every time, that yes, he does. While he washes her feet, she asks whatever happened to his old dog, and he tells her it passed long ago. She brings up an old love letter he once wrote about that same dog, and the memory pulls them both back to 2009.
A Letter, Delivered
In the flashback, Yanchen stops Hai Jianfeng on his way to school and asks him to deliver a letter to Gui Xiao, surprised to learn Jianfeng even knows her. She reads it at home, and when Yanchen calls afterward asking if she’s still upset over some rumour involving another boy, she assures him it was never true, nothing to be upset about. He asks, gently, if she’s feeling better, correctly guessing she’d been holding back a sneeze earlier that day, and she’s genuinely surprised he’d noticed something that small.
Caught in the Act
Back in the present, Mingyu walks in on Yanchen still washing Gui Xiao’s feet and beats a hasty retreat, whispering to Duan Rou that the two of them were clearly flirting. Yanchen calls out that leaving the door open doesn’t give him permission to look, and they close it, heading off for a nap.
Left standing with Duan Rou, Mingyu grows visibly stiff and awkward, explaining that talking to Yanchen, two men catching up, feels entirely different from talking to a woman. When she asks if he’s tired, he isn’t, and offers to show her around instead. Where would she like to go? Qining, she says.
Road Home Episode 21 Recap: My Thoughts
The cinematography of this desert excavation site is completely barren, and yet there’s something genuinely beautiful about it, watching Yanchen climb the mountain just to get enough signal for a call, the aerial shots capturing just how vast and empty this landscape really is. That shot of him walking the mountain’s edge and running back down was stunning.
I’m loving this second-couple pairing between Mingyu and Duan Rou so much. There’s real fun in watching them get nudged together this way, and it feels like something that’s been brewing quietly in the background rather than forced.
Mingyu’s awkwardness is played so well, especially given how manly and capable he otherwise seems, tall, good-looking, a SWAT captain in his own right, while Duan Rou is clearly tough, beautiful, not remotely shy, and finds his fumbling completely hilarious.
And I loved watching Yanchen and Gui Xiao settle so comfortably into being an actual married couple now, no longer just dating, but fully husband and wife. Their romance has reached such a mature, easy place, and both actors are so comfortable together, it feels like they were always meant to be paired this way. I will have to admit I didnโt feel their chemistry straight away but Jing Boran is so charismatic that he can make any couple pairing work!
