Irreplaceable Episode 14 Recap

**SPOILER ALERT**

TL;DR (Quick Overview)

As Yuanzhou closes its Morse funding, Xu Chi refuses Ye Xinzhi’s offer to pull strings and sets out to clear her name herself, secretly recording Yang Rui’s admission that Ma Ke pressured him to implicate her. Doubting Director Peng’s story that he handed Ma Ke two million in cash, she tracks Ma Ke down at the hospital and gets his cooperation, then gatecrashes the investigation briefing with a weighted tennis bag demonstration, his gout prescription and his phone’s location history. Meanwhile, Lin Long bluntly asks Shen Jin if he has feelings for her, sending him stammering and running.

Celebrating With the Enemy

Yuanzhou Digital Collectibles announces it has closed a Series C round worth hundreds of millions of yuan, led by Morse China. Xu Chi is pulled into the celebratory photos and praised by guests who are amazed someone so young is so capable. Afterwards, she slips away to Ye Xinzhi’s side, and he asks if she can’t stand seeing Wen Ruosen looking so smug.

They agree they’ll need patience. Now that the contract is signed, Yuanzhou has to operate for a while before the numbers turn bad and give them their chance to push Wen into the pit. When Ye Xinzhi asks if she’s getting restless, Xu Chi says it isn’t that. She’s afraid she won’t have time to enjoy being in love with him.

She also has her own problems. Maxmise’s investigation still hasn’t concluded, and it’s stuck on Yang Rui, who refuses to admit she had nothing to do with it and insists they wrote the report together on Ma Ke’s orders. Ye Xinzhi offers to speak to Mr. Pi, but she refuses.

She wants to go on the offensive and handle it herself. The consulting world is small, and if Mr. Pi does her a favour, she’ll always carry a stain she can never wash off. Clearing her own name is the only way it will feel satisfying. Ye Xinzhi agrees, calling her a stubborn little lion.

A Gentle Breeze Comes

Ye Xinzhi tells her to look over at the venue’s display, where the two halves of the classical line behind her name light up: a gentle breeze comes, and sentiments linger. She asks if he did this. He claims he just happened to see it, and she teases that he’s passing the magic along. She thanks him for his little gift.

She has always felt like a passer-by in this city, and her biggest dream was just a forty-year-old apartment. She never imagined a piece of this city’s brilliance could belong to her. Ye Xinzhi tells her that he belongs to her too.

Lin Long and Cindy

At Bolo, Cindy catches Lin Long reading the group chat about Xu Chi’s success and asks how it feels to see her former subordinate doing so well. Lin Long says she feels however Cindy feels. Cindy points out that Xu Chi is suspended under investigation and still closed a hundred-million-yuan deal, so isn’t Lin Long jealous?

Lin Long says she isn’t jealous, only envious. Everyone has ups and downs, and there’s no need to get worked up over one round. Whether it’s Xu Chi landing a huge deal or Lin Long making Bolo a success for Cindy, she’s happy for them. Cindy asks what if Lin Long is just a lifelong runner up who never wins a medal, given she’s always a wallflower at consulting association mixers yet signs up every year.

Lin Long tells her she really doesn’t like her. Cindy says she really does like Lin Long, who keeps coming back for more arguments she can never win. She won’t hold it against her, since Lin Long is on her team.

Mr. Shen’s Bad Back

Lin Long finds Shen Jin napping in a quiet spot he uses every lunchtime, only to discover he has thrown his back out. She helps him sit and presses a point behind his knee, which instantly eases the pain. She explains it’s the Weizhong acupoint, a trick Xu Chi taught her when she had back pain during her pregnancy.

Surprised, Shen asks if she isn’t bothered by Xu Chi anymore, since he overheard her talking to Cindy. Lin Long asks if she can skip a question that has nothing to do with work, but he says nobody knows their history better than he does.

Lin Long admits it would be a lie to say she feels nothing. They had their issues, but Xu Chi really helped her through the divorce, so if she were still jealous, she’d be a terrible person. Now she simply envies her and wishes her well, and is even trying to help, because someone so capable shouldn’t be dragged into a ridiculous commercial bribery case.

Shen jokes that she has turned into the Monkey King with seventy two tricks. When Lin Long tries to leave, he insists on buying her lunch to thank her for fixing his back. She says she already ate, and he asks if she means the sandwich she picked up off the floor. When she still refuses, he orders her to come, reminding her that he’s the client.

A Disastrous Lunch

Over steak, Shen tells her to eat more and put on weight. Lin Long says she doesn’t eat red meat and doesn’t want to gain weight. He points out he has seen countless photos of her eating steak, and though she blocked him on WeChat Moments, Cindy didn’t, and Cindy has posted plenty of unflattering photos of her looking heavy and messy.

He piles food on her plate, saying gaining weight will boost her immune system so she’ll be in a better mood for her fights with Cindy. He adds that watching the two of them is like Tom and Jerry, and it cheers him up when he’s tired. Lin Long tells him he has a real way with words, and that this day next year will be his death anniversary. Shen replies that he predicts it’ll be their wedding anniversary.

Lin Long storms off. Shen follows, insisting he was only joking and has no filter. She says that doesn’t give him the right to push her around just because he’s the client, and she’s had enough. Shen offers her a chance to take it out on him.

A therapist is expensive and useless, so she should punch him instead. He has noticed she’s been living like a robot lately. When she asks if he means it, he strikes a Bruce Lee pose, tells her to be water, and pretends to fetch his nunchucks, only for his back to give out again. Lin Long helps him to a seat, struggling not to laugh, and he tells her to laugh all she likes.

Then Lin Long asks him directly whether he has feelings for her. He took her to hospital, got her an amulet, looks out for her on the project, cares about her health and eating, and lets her hit him and yell at him. Is it all just to make her happy, a way of getting her attention?

Shen stammers that she’s being ridiculous. At most, it’s sympathy, and he just wants the project to go smoothly. A phone call saves him, and he hurries off claiming the bank needs him.

Confronting Yang Rui

Xu Chi tracks Yang Rui down at a noodle shop near his place after he goes off the grid. He sneers that she has escaped to live it up and come to show off. She tells him she has learned he told investigators the microservices plan was something they did together on Ma Ke’s orders, when he knows she opposed it more than once. Suspecting she’s recording, he makes her unlock her phone to check.

Xu Chi asks why he would lie and drag her into this when they parted on good terms. Yang Rui says she did wrong him, because her heart always belonged to someone else. As for himself, he only followed Ma Ke, which isn’t wrong given Maxmise’s high turnover.

He didn’t take a single cent, but investigators have Ma Ke’s transfers to him and think they’re bribes. He fronted so much money for Ma Ke that it can’t be untangled. When he asked Ma Ke to testify, Ma Ke threatened him and told him to drag her in, because her boyfriend is a Hezong partner, and if Ye Xinzhi covers for her, they might all get a way out.

He knows it’s despicable, but it wasn’t easy getting into Maxmise. He has a mortgage and car loan and wants to make partner. He begs Xu Chi to get her boyfriend to help keep him at Maxmise.

Sha Sha’s Help

Xu Chi recorded the whole confession on her bracelet and plays it for Sha Sha. Sha Sha says it’s a good start, but not enough, because investigators might think Yang Rui only said those things to clear her. She needs physical evidence. Still, Sha Sha is pleased Xu Chi is fighting for herself, because if she relies on the company, it will drag on until she’s finished.

Xu Chi realises Sha Sha had Lin Long pass along what Yang Rui told investigators. When she asks why Sha Sha is helping, especially after being dragged in because of her, Sha Sha says Xu Chi is her subordinate and they were both framed. Besides, it benefits her too: Bu Tianna will stop camping outside her door, and Richard will owe her a favour. Most of all, she wants Xu Chi to know that not every leader in this industry steps on subordinates to get ahead like Ma Ke.

Xu Chi then asks whether Ma Ke has admitted taking money. Sha Sha says he only admitted taking the request and suggesting an outsourcing company. Director Peng insists he personally handed Ma Ke two million yuan in cash, with a time, place and witnesses, but there are no transfer records, and Ma Ke’s credit records are normal.

Xu Chi wonders why Ma Ke would gamble his career when finishing Celestial would have made him associate partner. She asks Sha Sha to arrange a meeting with him. Sha Sha warns that speaking up for him could drag her deeper in, and management has already decided he’s out either way.

Xu Chi says being fired for bribery is very different from resigning over policy violations. She has history with Ma Ke and no reason to help him, but she wants to prove she can clear her name without connections and without dragging others down like Yang Rui did.

A Lawyer, a Pose and a Tease

Ye Xinzhi guesses Sha Sha agreed to set up the meeting, since it costs her nothing if it fails and makes them both heroes if it works. Xu Chi admits she’s scared Ma Ke really did take the money and she’ll be pulled in deeper. He coaches her out of a nervous posture, telling her to take her hands off her head and cross her arms lower over her chest.

He then says he wants to introduce her to a female friend at dinner. When Xu Chi bristles, he explains it’s Bai Xiao, a legendary lawyer at Jun’an, one of the top law firms, who has handled many commercial bribery cases. Having a lawyer with her when she meets Ma Ke will save her a lot of trouble. Xu Chi realises he worded it that way on purpose to wind her up.

At the gym, Bu Tianna watches Xu Chi gush over Ye Xinzhi and complains she can’t stand how mushy they are. When Xu Chi teases her about Zhao Heng, Bu Tianna insists they’re just colleagues who eat together. Xu Chi points out that going home together after dinner is something else entirely.

Ma Ke Refuses

Sha Sha calls to say Ma Ke refuses to meet. When he heard Xu Chi was bringing a lawyer, he said she’s the last person in the company he wants to see. Xu Chi tries to brush it off, saying she already met Ms. Yu from Celestial that morning and Ms. Yu is willing to help.

Ye Xinzhi sees she’s still stung, and offers his brilliant girlfriend a consultant crash course. Smart people aren’t good at failure. They either shut down or melt down. He walks her through identifying it as a restoration type problem, a gap between expectation and reality, then analysing the root causes. Ma Ke hates her because of their past, and he’s wary of lawyers.

Her conclusion is that he’s hostile to both Maxmise and her, so she has to see him without a lawyer. She already has his home address from sending packages before. Ye Xinzhi tells her to wear the recording bracelet and carry pepper spray, just like with Yang Rui.

Xu Chi asks if he thinks it’s shady that she secretly recorded Yang Rui, and whether he’ll laugh at her for being set up by her ex. Ye Xinzhi says no, because without Yang Rui, he wouldn’t look so good by comparison. He can tell she still wants to help Yang Rui, and she admits she remembers how Yang Rui helped her when she first joined.

Ye Xinzhi points out Yang Rui probably didn’t say anything too damaging, or investigators would have hounded her during her leave. Xu Chi is surprised he’s defending his love rival. He asks if Yang Rui even counts as one, and she laughs that he and Bu Tianna belong together because they’re both so full of themselves. He says he’d much rather something plain and simple, and she pretends to be offended at being called plain.

She asks why he has become a guest professor at Huanghe Business School. Since Morse’s money arrived, Wen has been burning cash on promotion, driven by capital and greed under the harsh terms. Like a game of Go, once you secure territory, you build momentum.

Rather than waiting for the market to blow up on its own, he’ll use his lectures at this influential think tank to make sure policy shapers understand the systemic risks in digital collectibles. Then Wen is finished. Xu Chi says she loves this scheming side of him. He insists consulting is always open strategy, not scheming. She says she loves it anyway.

The Lactation Room

Working late, Lin Long runs into Shen, who tells her he was only joking the other day and she doesn’t need to run every time she sees him. He offers to skip the delivery meeting so she won’t feel awkward. She says she isn’t awkward. When he realises her new office doubles as a lactation room at night, he can’t believe the tables have turned and she’s now the one laughing at him.

Lin Long says he used to see her at her worst, but she has finally pulled herself together. Shen nervously asks whether, after everything she said, she has a crush on him. Lin Long cuts him off, saying it won’t be anything good and she knows herself well.

When he asks who she was on the phone with, she explains Xu Chi is trying to find a colleague who moved after being suspended. Shen, who used to work in network security, says he knows ten thousand legal ways to find him.

She declines, but he suggests a simpler idea. Ma Ke is a local, unemployed man in his mid-thirties with an eight-year-old child. Moving is easy, but changing schools is hard, so his wife will make him do school pickups. Xu Chi should wait at the school gate.

Racing Against the Clock

Xu Chi waits at the school for two days with no luck, while Lin Long warns that Celestial and Maxmise hold a joint investigation briefing at 5:30 that afternoon. After a case of mistaken identity at the gate, Ye Xinzhi pulls up and tells her to get in.

Du’s business investigation team has found that Ma Ke’s child is ill and he has been at the hospital. With only an hour and a half to go, Xu Chi worries her fate is about to be sealed. Ye Xinzhi tells her their fate is always in their own hands. When he was framed, he had no one, but she has him.

At the hospital, Xu Chi asks Ma Ke if he wants his child to know their dad was framed. She tells him three things. First, she’s willing to believe he didn’t take Celestial’s money. Second, she doesn’t like him, but she wants to help him and Yang Rui, because only by proving there was no bribe can she return to Maxmise with her head held high.

Third, she has seen the interim report and found a problem. Director Peng claims they met at Century Mall at 7:30 on the 24th, but Ma Ke was near the airport at 6:30, which is impossible to get from in rush hour. Why would Peng lie?

The Tennis Bag

At the briefing, the investigation team lays out its case. Chat records show Director Peng hinting that replacing the IT architecture would be better for Celestial and promising to thank Ma Ke in person after introducing a vendor. Cafรฉ footage from the 29th shows Peng handing Ma Ke a tennis bag at Century Mall. And Yang Rui admitted Ma Ke told him to recommend replacing the whole system. The evidence seems rock solid.

Barred from the room because she’s directly involved, Xu Chi gets Zhao Heng to hold up a tennis bag loaded with twenty five kilograms of dumbbells while she films him. Using the meeting room’s wireless screen casting, she hijacks the display from outside the door. Her slides explain that two million yuan in cash weighs at least twenty six kilograms, yet Ma Ke walked off with the bag easily, while Zhao Heng’s bag is visibly deformed and hard to carry.

When the door opens, Xu Chi asks for five minutes. Director Peng claims they met at Binhe Brewpub on the 18th and at Ohara Japanese Cuisine on the 25th, but Ma Ke has severe gout, as his prescription from the 15th shows, and beer and seafood are the worst things for gout. When someone calls that circumstantial, she produces Ma Ke’s phone.

With Ma Ke’s cooperation, an engineer from Siwei Group, which handles the phone’s after sales service in China, remotely verified that its system and apps haven’t been altered. Its location history shows Ma Ke near the airport, fifteen kilometres from the brewpub, on the 18th, and nowhere near the Japanese restaurant on the 25th. One attendee wonders aloud if her husband’s phone has that function too.

Xu Chi argues that the interim report relied too heavily on Peng’s one-sided account, and that Peng may be gambling that two major companies will sweep things under the rug. She asks Mr. Zheng to believe that Maxmise operates with professional integrity. When someone suggests the bag might simply have held a tennis racket, Mr. Zheng asks everyone to step outside and calls Sha Sha and Ms. Yu in for a private meeting.

Irreplaceable Episode 14 Recap: My Thoughts

The romance between our leads was sweet for a few minutes at the start, with the gentle breeze display and him telling her he belongs to her too, but nothing too crazy for the rest of the episode.

My favourite part of this whole episode was Mr. Shen and Lin Long. That man is so funny! I love how the women in this drama have no qualms asking men if they like them. I don’t think Lin Long is interested yet, but she’s caught between being infuriated by him and touched by all his gestures and his ability to make her laugh. He is her client too, so there’s a level of professionalism that has to be kept. Here’s hoping something does develop between them.

I’m really enjoying Xu Chi trying to clear not only her own name but Yang Rui’s and Ma Ke’s too, understanding that all of them were set up by Director Peng. I love that she refused to let Ye Xinzhi pull strings for her and insisted on clearing her name herself.

Some might worry he’s moulding her in his own image, but she’s clearly her own woman, taking his advice while fighting her own battles. It looks like she’s going to get her chance after all, and we’ll get the resolution we want.

A solid episode, but nothing overly exciting happening.
