TL;DR (Quick Overview)
Bu Tianna explains why she joined the Celestial Insurance team, but after Zhao Heng bluntly exposes how little she knows about Xu Chi’s life, her clumsy second apology turns into a declaration of rivalry, which Xu Chi cheerfully accepts. Xu Chi impresses Ye Xinzhi and Du by rescuing Du’s broken hard drive, and Ye Xinzhi marks her as one of his own for Wen Ruosen’s project. At work, Ma Ke talks her out of her value tree proposal, then sets her up to fail in front of Mr. Pi before presenting her original idea as his own.
Bu Tianna Explains
Bu Tianna finds Xu Chi first thing in the morning. She heard Xu Chi rushed out the day before and went quiet, and she didn’t dare call, so she asked Zhao Heng how she was. When Xu Chi asks why she didn’t dare call, Bu Tianna says she was afraid of being misunderstood.
She should have told Xu Chi before joining the Celestial Insurance team, but she wanted to explain in person, and Ma Ke got there first. Xu Chi says she wouldn’t misunderstand, since it isn’t her personal project. Bu Tianna asks her not to talk to her like that, so Xu Chi suggests they talk work instead, since Ma Ke asked her to help Bu Tianna get up to speed.
Bu Tianna explains that her father keeps assuming she only landed Ande Energy through his connections. When Xu Chi said digital finance was the next big trend, she wanted to try it too, and Mr. Pi unexpectedly put her on Celestial, saying they get along so well they’d make good partners. She never meant to steal Xu Chi’s project. Xu Chi points out she didn’t turn it down either. Bu Tianna admits it.
She saw it as a chance to compete fairly with Xu Chi and prove herself to her father. Xu Chi says that since she switched projects midway herself, there’s no reason Bu Tianna can’t join halfway too. When Bu Tianna asks if she’s still angry, Xu Chi says she got it out of her system with a few sarcastic remarks, and they agree on friendship first and competition second.
That evening, Bu Tianna invites Xu Chi to dinner. Xu Chi passes because she has a 9:30pm gym session with the poser. Now that they’ve cleared the air, she can be genuine friends with him.

Zhao Heng Tells It Straight
Bu Tianna ends up eating beef noodles alone, and coincidentally Zhao Heng sits down nearby with an alcohol-free beer. When she asks why he isn’t prying this time, he says he doesn’t want her thinking he’s always pestering her. She tells him Xu Chi turned her down for the gym but went home instead.
Zhao Heng explains that Xu Chi probably means jogging with Ye Xinzhi, since they’re neighbours and he’s seen them running in the mornings. Bu Tianna still feels something is off. They’re on the same team now, and Xu Chi shares everything and cooperates flawlessly, but she turned down dinner with full details of when, where and with whom.
Zhao Heng does a perfect impression of Xu Chi’s overly formal tone, and Bu Tianna asks why she’d act like that. He says it’s simple. If Bu Tianna doesn’t treat her as a friend, why would Xu Chi treat her as one? Bu Tianna protests that she explained every detail before joining the team. Zhao Heng asks if she thinks that once she explains, Xu Chi simply has to accept it. Does she think she’s some rich young lady? Then he remembers she actually is one.
When Bu Tianna grabs her phone to confront Xu Chi, he snatches it and tells her the truth: she has low EQ. She holds her head high like a proud swan and blows up over the smallest thing. No wonder her father has grown to dislike her, and no wonder she has no real friends after two decades except Xu Chi.
Xu Chi knows she lives at Bairui Apartments, knows her goal is to win her father’s approval and take over Siwei Group, and dropped everything to drink with her when she was upset. But does Bu Tianna know where Xu Chi lives, or what her goal is? Where was Bu Tianna when Xu Chi was upset? Xu Chi lives in a room of just over twenty square metres at the 9 Days Inn.
She joined Maxmise to earn enough to buy back her mother’s old apartment, and the down payment alone is over a million, about what Bu Tianna’s car cost. He didn’t hear it from Xu Chi. He saw the property flyer at her desk. Even as a regular colleague, he knows more about her than her supposed best friend.
A Ride Home
Zhao Heng follows Bu Tianna in his car, which he bought just two days ago. She notices she’s already memorised his plate and asks why someone who claims to be broke bought a car. He says every man needs his own car, his is second hand, and Maxmise pays well.
He’s following her to make sure she gets home safe, since she’s upset and it’s late. If anything happens, he can play the hero, and if nothing does, she might notice him quietly watching over her and give him a chance. She gets in.
Bu Tianna calls him blunt and dares him, mockingly offering him his chance. He says his beat-up car is far too shabby for anything adult rated, so maybe somewhere else. She scoffs that he doesn’t have the guts and is just trying to get her attention again.
He leans in and tells her never to say a man has no guts, because he could do something right now. Then he adds that in his car, she shouldn’t mention anyone else’s name, male or female, or he’ll get jealous. He tells her to put her seatbelt on so he can drive her home. Shaken, she obediently listens.
Bu Tianna quietly asks if she’s really that terrible. Zhao Heng says not exactly. She’s just used to being on top and doesn’t know how to get along with ordinary people like him and Xu Chi. He grew up moving from a village to a small town, and Xu Chi is half orphaned.
They look polished working in the CBD on decent salaries, but they have to grind for more than a decade to reach the starting line Bu Tianna was born on. To switch teams, Xu Chi needed Sha Sha’s approval, while Bu Tianna went straight to a partner.
Bu Tianna insists Xu Chi told her she’s confident and doesn’t care about her advantages, and they’ll compete on merit to see who becomes Maxmise’s Rookie of the Year. Zhao Heng asks if she really buys that at her age.
In friendship or romance, a gap in roots makes for a bitter struggle. People like them grind for years so they won’t envy her background, but that doesn’t mean they don’t admire it. And whatever her temper or EQ, once she crosses someone’s bottom line, there’s no going back.
Bu Tianna asks what bottom line she crossed. She didn’t steal resources or go to Mr. Pi for materials. Zhao Heng says stealing resources is trivial. What would break his heart is that she never gave Xu Chi a heads up before acting. Bu Tianna remembers starting to tell Xu Chi something, then saying it could wait.
Zhao Heng tells her it isn’t that she forgot or didn’t trust Xu Chi. She simply never took her into account. That’s the saddest part. She never saw Xu Chi as a friend. Bu Tianna declares there’s no turning back then, since someone so thin skinned doesn’t deserve to be her friend, and tells him not to follow her.
The Second Apology
The next morning, Bu Tianna arrives at Xu Chi’s hotel, and while she waits she recites to herself everything she wants to say. Xu Chi is surprised to see her, and Bu Tianna marches up to apologise for the second time. First, she didn’t consult Xu Chi before joining the project. Second, she never looked into why Xu Chi had been upset for so long.
Before Xu Chi can respond, Bu Tianna says that apart from those two things, she doesn’t believe she did anything wrong. Why didn’t Xu Chi tell her she was upset? Even if Bu Tianna acted badly, that’s no excuse to be fake polite with her.
Zhao Heng said she doesn’t care about Xu Chi, but Xu Chi never opened up either. That’s just how Bu Tianna is. If someone doesn’t want to share, she won’t ask. She was giving her space. She tells Xu Chi not to come closer. She could pretend to make up and stay her polite best friend, but she can’t, because there’s a thorn in her heart.
She wants a friend with complete mutual trust, and she thought Xu Chi was different. When Xu Chi asks what she’s doing here then, Bu Tianna announces that from now on, she’ll hold nothing back on Celestial Insurance and prove with real results that she’s better. Xu Chi plays along. She agrees they aren’t really that close, since they’ve only been colleagues for six months, and their friendship amounts to one rescue and a bottle of juice.
Bu Tianna has never had friends, so out of gratitude she projected all her hopes onto Xu Chi. Xu Chi says Bu Tianna is right that she doesn’t deserve to be her friend, and hiding her inferiority complex around her has been exhausting. So, bring on the rivalry.
They’ll reset, be colleagues and compete all out with no hard feelings. Bu Tianna, completely thrown, agrees and stumbles over her declaration that she’ll hold nothing back, then storms off fuming.
Working From Ye Xinzhi’s Apartment
At Ye Xinzhi’s apartment, Xu Chi tells him Bu Tianna acted like a kindergartener announcing she won’t play anymore. His advice to talk it out was good. She used to see Bu Tianna as an aloof, powerful leading lady and tried too hard around her. Now she realises Bu Tianna is a kitten hissing and showing her claws.
Ye Xinzhi asks if she teased her on purpose. She did. If she refused the challenge, Bu Tianna would think she was dismissing her anger and explode again, so letting her punch thin air is far more fun. When he asks if she’s afraid of losing, she says her confidence is fully restored, since she has to live up to all his bitter advice.
Besides, Ma Ke runs Celestial, and she and Bu Tianna are both junior analysts brought in midway. Even if they polish their proposals to perfection, the winner won’t be made consulting manager. She’s relieved they’ve cleared the air, because now she can work at his place with its amazing view instead of in cafรฉs, without worrying about bumping into Maxmise colleagues.
Ye Xinzhi mentions Du is coming and asks about her Benyuan data analysis. Everything is sent except one file. Xu Chi asks if he and Du plan to muscle in on Wen Ruosen’s partnership with Benyuan, since the documents are so detailed and he had her draft an investment prospectus for a digital collectibles gallery, run simulations and do research.
Only competitors dig that deep. He says it’s the opposite. They want to make the partnership happen. Xu Chi offers to work at the hotel so she won’t be in the way. When he asks if she isn’t going to ask why, she says he’ll tell her when he’s ready.
A Hard Drive Disaster
Du arrives, and Xu Chi tries to leave, promising to send the data in half an hour. Du won’t hear of Ye Xinzhi sending her out in the heat and insists she stay. Ye Xinzhi gives her a quiet room to work in. Du then teases him about the young lady in his home, saying he has had plenty of young ladies around but defends this one the most. Ye Xinzhi threatens to knock him out and swings at him, and Du’s laptop crashes to the floor.
The laptop survives, but the external hard drive stops responding. Du panics. He’s flying to Shenzhen the next morning and all his roadshow materials are on it, with no backup. Xu Chi checks it and confirms the laptop’s ports are fine, so the problem is the drive.
If it’s a port issue, swapping the drive’s connector might work, or she could try data recovery. She has the tools at her place a few hundred metres away. Du can’t believe she can fix hard drives and calls her a lifesaver. As soon as she leaves, he remembers everything on the drive is under non-disclosure agreements. He trusts Xu Chi but needs someone to watch her, and since he barely knows her, he sends Ye Xinzhi.
Repairs at the 9 Days Inn
Ye Xinzhi awkwardly turns up at Xu Chi’s room. She immediately understands why, apologises for not bringing her tools to his place, and invites him in, warning it’s a bit messy and she only has one chair. She has already replaced the drive’s connector, but the laptop wants to format it, so she’s running data recovery software.
When his eyes land on her underwear hanging out to dry, she smoothly changes the subject. Asked why she owns these tools, she explains her ex-boyfriend loved DIY and she picked it up for fun. She bought the kit as a gift for him, but kept it after they broke up.
While the scan runs, she stands up to block the view of her clothes. She says she finds it amusing how panicked Du was. Elite businesspeople are so used to efficiency that when one link breaks, they fall right off their pedestal. Ye Xinzhi asks her to spare them some dignity, and she promises not to mention it to Du.
The files are recovered. She has him sit beside her and watch as she copies everything to another drive, making sure nothing is saved on her computer. She tells him to remind Du to get a solid-state drive, which handles shocks better, and to keep multiple backups.
She’s only an amateur and they got lucky. Ye Xinzhi says it isn’t luck, she’s naturally brilliant. She jokes that for such smooth talk, she’ll waive the repair fee, and sends him back to Du.
“She’s One of Us”
Du is overjoyed and asks where Ye Xinzhi found such an all-round talent. He says back when he was recruiting interns, and boasts about his good taste. Du wants to take her to dinner to thank her. Ye Xinzhi says she’s one of them now, so there will be plenty of chances. He wants her involved in Wen Ruosen’s project, and tells Du to watch how he speaks to her because he has high hopes for her.
Du asks if he’s grooming her as his right hand. Ye Xinzhi says maybe. He tells Du she’s improving incredibly fast. A few days ago, she was crying over a stolen project, and after one talk, she’s transformed. She calmly analyses the competition, handles people skilfully and has the heiress wrapped around her finger.
Even in her cramped room, she received him with total poise, neither insecure nor showy. At her age, he was nowhere near as composed. Du says he needs to hold onto talent like that and bring her straight to C&C to train her himself. Ye Xinzhi says there’s no rush. Let her weather the storms at Maxmise first.
Back to Square One
Ma Ke announces that Celestial Insurance isn’t satisfied with the initial proposal, so they’ll scrap it and start over. Yang Rui protests that the research is massive and they’re already burnt out. Ma Ke reveals the restart was Bu Tianna’s suggestion, and asks if the seniors are intimidated by two new hires. Bu Tianna says she loves competition because she has never lost. Xu Chi replies that neither has she.
Lu Le briefs Sha Sha. The consultants drafted new proposals, but Bu Tianna and Xu Chi are clashing hardest. Bu Tianna is taking a top-down approach, meeting senior executives at major insurers through her network and learning everything about Celestial’s competitors, standing on the shoulders of giants.
Xu Chi is building grassroots connections, spending time with Celestial’s staff to understand exactly why the first proposal failed. Lu Le backs Bu Tianna. Sha Sha admits she’s rooting for Xu Chi, because Bu Tianna has connections, but Xu Chi has solid backing too.
Ideas, Not Details
Reviewing her slides, Ye Xinzhi asks Xu Chi if she spots a problem with the India branch. When she points out Celestial has no Indian branch, he blames it on meeting so often with his firm’s new Indian partner that he now mixes up nodding for no and shaking for yes. She realises he’s messing with her.
Getting serious, he says that as a competitor he can’t comment on Maxmise’s project, but he’s pleased she redacted all key information. From now on, they’ll only discuss ideas, never concrete details, to avoid leaking confidential information. Overall, her proposal is logically structured and pretty solid for an analyst’s first draft.
Xu Chi bristles at “for an analyst.” Ye Xinzhi reminds her that experience comes from repeated failures, and she’s been on the project barely a month. It’s still good enough to give Bu Tianna a real fight. Xu Chi says beating Bu Tianna isn’t her only goal. She wants the client to genuinely approve her solution.
He says client satisfaction is relative, and usually it’s about getting them to compromise and buy in. A call from someone saved as Xiaoxi interrupts them, a Ms. Liu letting him know she’ll arrive in Beijing in two days. Before taking it, he tells Xu Chi to research thoroughly, because the client will respond to that.
Ma Ke’s Advice
Late one night, Ma Ke finds Xu Chi back at the office looking for inspiration because something about her proposal still feels off. He offers to look it over. Her new approach breaks down Celestial Insurance’s value tree.
Ma Ke says it’s far too complicated and tells her to redo it around scenario based big data applications and improving the customer experience. Xu Chi worries that’s too granular and admits she has little experience in scenario design. Ma Ke insists the last proposal failed for being too abstract, says he believes in her, and tells her to get some rest.
Set Up in Front of Mr. Pi
Exhausted, Xu Chi tells Yang Rui that Ma Ke suddenly had her refocus two days ago, and he wishes she had told him sooner so he could help. At the weekly meeting, Mr. Pi, just back from the US, drops in to listen and asks Ma Ke if the project has hit roadblocks. Ma Ke says research and the framework are done and the client is happy with those, but wants revisions, and the team now has five proposals with different approaches.
He offers to walk Mr. Pi through them, then announces that Xu Chi, who handles scenario based big data, has repeatedly told him she’s very confident in her proposal, so she should go first. When Xu Chi tries to explain that she only just changed direction, Ma Ke cuts her off, and Mr. Pi recalls how confident she was on Bolo and asks to hear her thinking.
Partway through, Mr. Pi stops her. For the pet medical insurance scenarios she proposes, what’s the annual premium revenue for each? Xu Chi estimates over 100 million. Bu Tianna points out that Huayuan Insurance, similar in size to Celestial, earned about 50 million from pet medical insurance last year, while Celestial earns nearly 100 billion in annual premiums.
How could her scenario possibly move the needle for a business that size? Xu Chi admits she hasn’t gathered enough material. Then why, Mr. Pi asks, did she tell Ma Ke she was so confident? Mr. Pi turns to Ma Ke for his view as project manager. Ma Ke stands and presents his approach, starting from the key value drivers of Celestial’s current business with a value tree he has built, the very approach he told Xu Chi to scrap. Xu Chi moves to stand, but Yang Rui, sitting beside her, holds her back.

Irreplaceable Episode 8 Recap: My Thoughts
Zhao Heng and Bu Tianna are hilarious! This is what happens when you put a low EQ person and a high EQ person together. I love that the drama explores this as a theme, and I enjoyed how it played out. She took it well for a second, only to slip straight back into her old ways. His “threatening” move in the car was so funny, and when the OST kicked in with a lyric about holding back, I had a good chuckle! Don’t give up, Zhao Heng! She’ll come around eventually.
Be careful with your little “prank,” Xu Chi. You’re more attuned to what’s going on than Bu Tianna, and while her apology didn’t go so well, she cared enough to try. I’m relieved the show avoided a typical mean girl fallout, and that both of them are handling their ambitions with a level of respect, even if they’ve officially declared themselves just colleagues for now.
Ye Xinzhi, Ye Xinzhi! After all that rubbish about liking someone not always meaning romantically, were you just trying to convince yourself? Because we all saw you! What were those little moments when you couldn’t take your eyes off her?
And Du, you are so funny! Well done for calling it like it is and creating a situation that put them in the same space. Sometimes we all just need a little nudge and an opportunity, don’t we?
More romantic moments this episode add to their arc. Understandably, he’s trying to keep things professional because he truly values her capabilities and wants to mentor her properly, and I love how easily they slip from personal awkwardness into a highly competent team.
And just as Xu Chi clears one hurdle, another senior takes advantage of her. Ma Ke stealing her value tree idea and setting her up in front of Mr. Pi left me so frustrated on her behalf. The cutthroat nature of consulting keeps hitting her with harsher realities. Let’s see how she handles this in the next episode.
Another good episode with several themes running through it. I’m really enjoying this mature content, with no ridiculous red flag men chasing wide eyed innocent girls. A good business romance I didn’t know I needed!
