Irreplaceable Episode 11 Recap

**SPOILER ALERT**

TL;DR (Quick Overview)

With rumours swirling that she botched Celestial’s IT meeting, Xu Chi finds escape as Ye Xinzhi’s temporary secretary at a high stakes investment meeting, where his sweet words leave her flustered. After Lin Long reveals she once had a crush on him too and shares some hard won advice, Xu Chi and Yang Rui call off their relationship amicably. Bu Tianna lashes out when Zhao Heng guesses she was once hurt by a scheming older man, but softens toward her little brother. Xu Chi engineers a “chance” gym encounter to tell Ye Xinzhi she’s single, and while he plays it cool, Du’s teasing in the boxing ring shows how much the news has lifted him.

Rumours at the Office

With no workstation at Celestial, Xu Chi heads back to Maxmise to organise her materials. Zhao Heng finds her deep in thought and asks how she has time to space out when she should be swamped. She says she isn’t spacing out, she’s thinking.

Zhao Heng tells her the rumours seem to be true. Word around the office is that she and Yang Rui made fools of themselves in front of Celestial, throwing away all the goodwill they earned when the client accepted the overall plan, and now Celestial won’t even give them desks.

Xu Chi tells him not to spread nonsense, but Zhao Heng says he’s only warning her. She has been in the spotlight a lot, and plenty of people are waiting to see her fall. At a meeting just now, someone told Sha Sha she’s arrogant and that she argued with Bu Tianna in front of the client.

Xu Chi says they were only bickering. Zhao Heng knows, but others don’t. He gives her two pieces of advice: tone it down, and if something goes wrong with Yang Rui, don’t take the fall for him. Xu Chi admits Yang Rui doesn’t listen to her at all, and since he’s her boyfriend, she can’t exactly complain about him to Ma Ke.

Yang Rui tells her she shouldn’t believe gossip and offers to come back to the office next Monday to keep her company. Xu Chi says she doesn’t need company. She wants to draft a new proposal for Celestial’s IT department to show Maxmise’s sincerity and ability, so the client doesn’t think they’re all talk.

Yang Rui reminds her that Ma Ke told them to put it on hold and asks her not to go off on her own again. He apologises for sounding harsh, but says she shouldn’t keep butting heads with Ma Ke. To change the subject, he suggests they spend their day off during Celestial’s team building weekend at Huanying World. Xu Chi says they’ll figure it out later.

A Temporary Secretary

Ye Xinzhi messages Xu Chi asking her to be his temporary secretary that evening at J Center’s 120th floor, where he’s meeting the managing director of Morse Investment Bank to broker a deal for Tianhe Air. It’s Xu Chi’s first time there, and she has already posted photos on WeChat Moments.

Ye Xinzhi tells her that after a few dozen visits she’ll only complain about how long the lift takes, though face time with Morse’s MD is still rare. When she worries his outfit is too casual for a Tianhe meeting, he says he has known the MD for years, so dressing formally would be odd. Her outfit, though, is just right without the necklace. He tells her to relax, because she’ll be at her best that way.

Xu Chi reminds herself not to panic after all her bragging to Bu Tianna. She thanks him for the postcard, saying the little building looks exactly as she remembers it. He asks if she’s happy. When she says yes, he says that makes him even happier. Xu Chi, flustered, privately calls it foul play. When the waiter asks for drinks, they order the same thing at the same moment, and the waiter remarks on how in sync they are.

Ye Xinzhi introduces her to Mr. Deng as his assistant, Chi. Mr. Deng thanks him for bringing the deal, and Ye Xinzhi says it’s a small favour, since he’s consulting for Tianhe and knows they need investment and Mr. Deng has plenty of capital. When Mr. Deng asks Miss Xu to send the meeting minutes when she gets back, she tells him they’re already in his inbox.

Ye Xinzhi says he trained her personally, and she’s fast and accurate. Mr. Deng says many of her points impressed him and asks if she’d consider joining Morse. Xu Chi jokes that she has heard the chef at Morse’s elite staff restaurant came from a top five-star hotel, so if he’ll take her there for a meal, she can leave right now. Ye Xinzhi complains about Mr. Deng poaching right in front of him.

Mr. Deng says he admires how professional Ye Xinzhi is in every industry he consults for. Ye Xinzhi explains that consultants should know an industry better than the client. You can’t pull a random case from the files and churn out a proposal, because that’s fooling both the client and yourself. Xu Chi watches him in admiration, thinking of Yang Rui’s claim that Maxmise can’t know every company’s technical details and only needs to show a little.

A Comedy and a Confession

At the cinema with Yang Rui, Xu Chi is in tears during a comedy. When he asks if she’s still thinking about Celestial’s IT department, she claims she was moved by the film. He points out it’s a comedy, and she says laughing through tears is what makes it touching, then escapes to the restroom.

There she runs into Lin Long, who thanks her for finding the rental agent. She has moved, her divorce is finalised, and she feels completely free, so she’s catching a few movies before her leave ends. Lin Long mentions she saw Xu Chi come in with Yang Rui and thought she was seeing things.

She calls him a decent consultant with a good personality, but she had assumed Xu Chi and Ye Xinzhi were close. Xu Chi insists her family and he are just friends. Lin Long reveals that years ago, she interned under Ye Xinzhi at Boen for more than half a year.

He was her mentor, and she even had a little crush on him, though looking back it was probably admiration. She knows him well. He’s so cautious that he never has dinner alone with a female colleague. So, when she saw him drunk and leaning on Xu Chi that night, she was furious, but it proved he had already let her into his inner circle.

She can also tell Xu Chi has feelings for him. When Xu Chi starts to deny it, Lin Long tells her not to rush. The fact that she can talk about it so openly shows she let it go long ago. His type is what young girls fall for, and she’s well past that now.

An Amicable Breakup

At Beijing Happy Valley, Xu Chi automatically reaches for the expensive bottled water Ye Xinzhi likes. Yang Rui insists on paying but selects the cheaper option. Xu Chi thinks back to asking Lin Long how she controlled her feelings for him. Lin Long had said she left Boen and joined Maxmise.

Xu Chi realises Yang Rui is her Maxmise. Lin Long didn’t try to talk her out of it, but shared one lesson as a divorcee. If you’re with someone you like, you’re happy however busy or tired you are. If you’re with someone you don’t like that much, you’ll soon grow weary.

Xu Chi starts to speak, but Yang Rui gets in first and suggests they break up. He has been wanting to say it. He was happy when they got together, but there’s no real spark. They have different interests and are never on the same page on dates.

Since they were only trying it out, he figured it would be embarrassing if she dumped him first, so he beat her to it. Xu Chi jokes about where his “ladies first” manners went, and he says they’re both corporate drones, so gender doesn’t matter. They agree to stay as colleagues and good friends.

Single Again

At Bu Tianna’s apartment, Xu Chi cleans the dust out of her overheating router. Bu Tianna says the breakup is good, since they had no chemistry and it was his fault she got publicly scolded by Mr. Sun. Xu Chi says that since staying on the same team would be awkward, she wants a transfer. Bu Tianna invites her to join her team so they can do something big together.

Bu Tianna asks how she’ll move things forward with Ye Xinzhi now that she’s single. Xu Chi says she’ll just go back to how things were. Once you’ve had the best, nobody else compares, so she won’t force herself to be with anyone else.

She isn’t good enough for him yet, but she’ll work at it, learning from him and keeping things flirtatious, until one day she deserves him and has both career and love. Bu Tianna mocks her for claiming she’s “had” him when it’s only a secret crush.

Xu Chi says that after the Morse meeting, he sat in the back seat with her on the way to the hotel, and she has a feeling he’d be pleased to know she’s single. Bu Tianna laughs that a man of his status would naturally sit in the back, and if a young girl threw herself at her, she’d enjoy it too.

She insists Ye Xinzhi isn’t the scumbag Bu Tianna thinks. He has feelings for her but isn’t in love yet. One day, she’ll become a woman he can’t resist. Bu Tianna asks just how irresistible she means, and the two dissolve into teasing. Bu Tianna asks what happens if she never becomes that woman, or if he still won’t commit, pointing out she looked him up and he’s divorced.

Xu Chi says she looked it up too. Nothing has even started, so why worry about the ending? Besides, the dopamine of love lasts about three months, and maybe she’ll be the one who gets bored first, in which case she’ll just learn everything she can from him and squeeze him dry. Their banter turns into a playful scuffle over that phrase.

Bu Tianna says she won’t hire a repairman to fix the router because she doesn’t want strange men in her home. Xu Chi points out Zhao Heng was there the other day, so is he not a stranger, or not a man? Right on cue, the doorbell rings. It’s Zhao Heng with a new router, having noticed the property management gave her a bad old one.

Bu Tianna demands to know why he came without permission. He says it’s because of love. Xu Chi announces she has already fixed it and starts to leave, telling them to carry on talking or doing whatever they like. Bu Tianna says she’ll leave too, since she’s heading home.

When Xu Chi asks how she can go home given everything with her family, Bu Tianna explains she left quietly last time without burning bridges. She won’t follow their script. If they string her along, she’ll string them along too, playing the loving daughter while slowly taking control of Siwei Group. Her brother is just a kid, and by the time he’s grown, who knows who will run the company.

Zhao Heng says it’ll still belong to the Bu family. Bu Tianna asks how Xu Chi plans to let Ye Xinzhi know she’s single. Xu Chi says she has an ace: a “chance” encounter. Zhao Heng plonks himself down with his shoes on, joking he’s marrying into the family.

Zhao Heng Hits a Nerve

Because Bu Tianna’s licence plate is restricted that day, Zhao Heng drives her home, promising not to linger. He tells her to stop doubting fate when it brings them together. She says there’s no fate between them. Even if she leaned on his shoulder once when she was down, they’re never going any further.

He says he’s happy as they are. She tells him for the last time to stop wasting his time. He replies that it takes two people to decide that. She calls him thick skinned, says she doesn’t even like him, and accuses him of using every scheming trick to take advantage of her vulnerability.

Zhao Heng asks how she knows those tricks so well. Has she been burned by a schemer before? She has looks, talent and family background, yet no interest in relationships, is always on guard around men, and kept warning Xu Chi about Ye Xinzhi. She always says her family favours boys, but he has never heard her mention them pushing her to marry.

He guesses she must have been deeply hurt by a gentle, mature schemer, so badly that even her parents don’t bring it up. He adds that the man probably got close to her right around when she came back from abroad and discovered she had a little brother. Bu Tianna flashes back to a man demanding to know what her old house’s down payment had to do with him, and to her fury when he had her jewellery appraised, a birthday gift from her father.

She orders him to pull over, threatening to grab the wheel so they both go down. He says he’ll die with her if she likes. She then asks if his mother taught him no manners. Zhao Heng tells her she can say whatever she wants about him, but leave his parents out of it.

When she adds that it must take toxic parents to raise someone so shameless, he demands an apology or he’ll never speak to her again. She tells him he’d better mean it, because she has plenty of admirers and won’t miss one, and gets out.

A Big Sister After All

At home, Bu Tianna finds her little brother screaming and refusing to go for his vaccination while the housekeeper struggles with him. She tells everyone to step back, smashes a wooden board with a karate chop, and asks him if he’s going. He quickly says yes.

Later, her mother tells her Xiaojie is refusing to get in the car unless Bu Tianna takes him. She says she’s busy, but her mother insists, saying it’s rare he’s so attached to her and they want the siblings to get along. When Bu Tianna asks if she can hit him if he misbehaves, her mother says of course, he’s all hers.

In the car, Xiaojie explains he wanted her to come because shots hurt, and since she broke boards without feeling a thing, he wanted to borrow her courage. At the clinic, he struggles so much the nurse can’t give him the injection, so Bu Tianna has the nurse pretend to give her a shot first, showing him it doesn’t hurt at all.

Reassured, he gets his vaccine. Afterwards, he asks if hers hurt. She says a karate expert doesn’t mind a little pain. He offers her a candy he hid from their mother, explaining that girls in cartoons always feel better after sweets. Touched, she tells him to keep it and promises him ice cream instead. Thrilled, he adds donuts and cotton candy and declares she’s his favourite.

He then asks her to be CEO for him, because their dad always says he’ll be CEO one day, but he doesn’t want to be busy like Dad. He just wants to play. She tells him he won’t feel that way when he grows up.

A Not So Chance Encounter

Xu Chi goes to the gym Ye Xinzhi uses, figuring he trains at a fixed time each week. She gets on the treadmill, hoping to look like a coincidence and when she spots him, she starts running nonchalantly. Du spots her and asks if Ye Xinzhi will go say hi. Xu Chi feigns surprise, saying she’s trying out the equipment because the gym offers weekend trials near her place.

He remarks that she’s working hard on a Saturday instead of being out with friends. After a pause, she tells him she broke up. He is inwardly ecstatic and says he’s sorry to hear it, and that sweating it out is a good way to forget your troubles. He hands her a bottle of water and says he’s going boxing. Left alone, Xu Chi realises she can’t look back at him or leave either, because he’ll definitely notice.

In the ring, Ye Xinzhi hits so hard that Du asks if he took a power pill and accuses him of taking it out on him because his little girl left. When Ye Xinzhi says she told him she broke up, Du calls it great news because it gives him an opening. Ye Xinzhi bristles, asking what kind of man Du thinks he is.

Du insists he meant more chances to work together, and asks what Ye Xinzhi was thinking. Du then advises him to work out more, because exercise keeps you young and will make the age gap with his little girl less obvious. Ye Xinzhi asks if he really looks that old, and Du tells him to see for himself in the mirror.

Fellow Losers in Love

That evening, Zhao Heng asks Xu Chi if she had no luck with Ye the Legend either. She says she waited all afternoon to tell him she’s single, and he simply said he was going boxing. She bets he has never met anyone as delusional as her. Zhao Heng says there’s another one right here, and they toast as fellow losers in love.

Ye Xinzhi then sends Xu Chi a photo of moonlight with a text over lay โ€œThe Moonlight Is Beautiful Tonightโ€ over a lake from his evening meeting, wishing her good night. Xu Chi calls him a scumbag for ignoring her and then sending something like this. Zhao Heng, by now drunk, gets tomato juice from Xu Chi to settle his stomach, and wonders how he never noticed how caring she is.

She laments that she’s looking after the man chasing her best friend. Zhao Heng suggests they get together to annoy the other two, or at least post a couple photo only they can see. Xu Chi tells him to go home and sober up, and puts him in a car.

Back to Work

Ma Ke approves Xu Chi’s transfer to the actuarial team on the Celestial project, effective immediately. Xu Chi remembers Su Su’s WeChat bio about love coming and going while work lasts forever, and tells herself tomorrow is always a new day.

She and Bu Tianna prove a highly efficient pair. When Bu Tianna asks for a performance measurement tool for the actuarial department, Xu Chi recalls that Lian’an Insurance uses the Balanced Scorecard and sends it over.

She also has Celestial’s actuarial big data utilisation rate on hand, 17.3 percent, with more detail in the data table. Ma Ke invites anyone interested to join a video meeting with external insurance data experts at ten the next morning, and they both plan to attend.

The Milk Tea Queue

The next morning, colleagues rush to join a long line for a viral limited edition black truffle milk tea, capped at 200 cups a day. Bu Tianna spots Zhao Heng already in line. Assuming it’s for her, she smiles, steps out of the queue and rehearses in her head how she’ll coolly tell him she doesn’t like milk tea and ask why he’s talking to her after swearing he never would.

Irreplaceable Episode 11 Recap: My Thoughts

This romance is sooo good to watch. These two are going tit for tat, and just when Xu Chi thinks she has the upper hand, Ye Xinzhi comes back with another move. The postcard exchange was funny, with him saying he was even happier that she was happy to receive it. Foul is right! That moment when she walked in and saw him again after a while had hearts fluttering for sure.

At the end of the day, Xu Chi is completely in love with his mentorship, his business ideals and his success, which is a powerful attraction. She has mentioned again that she isn’t at his level yet, which makes things challenging.

I also loved how quickly the show wrapped up the Yang Rui storyline. Instead of dragging out a dead-end relationship for three or four episodes, they called it quits cleanly and stayed friends, keeping the plot tightly focused.

Bu Tianna, you sure have a lot of demons. You finally pushed Zhao Heng too far. You may have low EQ, but you don’t need to be mean to someone who cares about you. She just didn’t like it when he hit the nail on the head about her past love life.

Her new relationship with her little brother was interesting. At the end of the day, he’s just a little boy who’s scared of pain and loves sweets. It must be so strange for him to have a sister who doesn’t talk to him or spend time with him. Hopefully she doesn’t push him away the way she’s pushing away Zhao Heng.

But that entire gym scene had me rolling! It was done so well. This is exactly the craziness people get up to when they’re in love but want to look nonchalant. His boxing bout with Du was genius. Du’s “power pill” teasing, Ye Xinzhi’s little Freudian slip and Du telling him to look in the mirror because he’s old were all so good. It was nice to see him so unsure of himself, showing his vulnerable side. It’s so obvious her being single has given him a new lease of life, even if he plays it cool to her face.

Great episode again! I’m really loving how easy all the banter feels. It’s so natural, which means the script and acting are great. Nothing feels contrived, it flows so well, and the supporting characters really enhance the storyline.
