Irreplaceable Episode 6 Recap

**SPOILER ALERT**

TL;DR (Quick Overview)

Lin Long’s husband shoves her during an argument, and she loses the baby, but with Xu Chi’s help she secretly records his confession and resolves to divorce him, ending her feud with Xu Chi for good. In Macao, Xu Chi impresses Ye Xinzhi with her sharp instincts at a digital finance summit, and a dance leaves her with a growing crush. When he spots the photo she saved, he stages a scene with a female friend to snuff out her feelings, leaving Xu Chi humiliated and heartbroken, though she puts on a brave face and vows to focus only on her career.

Making Peace With Lin Long

Zhao Heng is meant to collect some important files from Lin Long’s home, but he’s stuck in a meeting and asks Xu Chi to go instead. When she hesitates, he gives her some sound advice. Lin Long will be back in a few months after the baby arrives, and she’ll still outrank Xu Chi when she returns, so it’s better to make peace than hold a grudge.

At Lin Long’s door, Xu Chi explains that she wasn’t around when Lin Long went on leave, and as her former mentor, she wanted to see how she was. Lin Long coolly replies that she might believe that if Xu Chi’s expression were more sincere.

Xu Chi assures her she isn’t there to kick her while she’s down. Lin Long says she doesn’t care, since business is business, and hands over the files to be counted. One database key USB drive is missing, so she goes to find it.

A Push That Changes Everything

Inside, Lin Long asks Jiang Zhiwen to fish out something she dropped between the couch cushions. He’s busy gaming and tells her to wait until he finishes his round. When she reminds him her colleague is waiting at the door, he snaps at her to stop rushing him.

The argument escalates until he shoves her and she falls hard to the floor. Xu Chi rushes in to help, but Lin Long tells her not to touch her. Zhiwen doesn’t lift a finger, complaining that his wife always acts like she’s dying over a little bump, and tells Xu Chi not to worry because he’s used to it. Xu Chi looks at him in disgust.

Then Xu Chi realises Lin Long’s water has broken. She calls an ambulance and stays by her side, urging her to hang on. At the hospital, the surgery notice confirms the worst. The baby’s heartbeat can no longer be detected.

Zhiwen arrives long after it’s all over, having only just dealt with the paperwork, and asks about the baby. He breaks down, telling Lin Long it’s all his fault and he’s the worst. She quietly tells him it’s okay, and that she knows he didn’t mean it.

A Truce, and a Plan

We then see what happened five minutes earlier. Lin Long thanks Xu Chi, who says she owes her one. Lin Long tells her none of this has anything to do with her, since she made her own choices. When Xu Chi brings up what she witnessed at the apartment, Lin Long explains there are no cameras at home, so Zhiwen will simply say she fell on her own.

She thanks Xu Chi, and then apologises for everything she did to her before. Xu Chi tells her she doesn’t remember anything that happened before. Lin Long smiles that, in that case, she doesn’t remember either. When Xu Chi asks if there’s anything else she needs, Lin Long has a request, and Xu Chi helps her set up an audio recorder.

When Zhiwen sobs that he was reckless and used too much force, that he didn’t know she was hurt, and that he hasn’t considered her feelings in the past, every word is captured. Lin Long takes the recording to her lawyer, Ms. Huang, and explains it proves three things.

First, Zhiwen had been cold and indifferent to her long before the delivery. Second, the main cause of her miscarriage was him pushing her in anger. Third, the money he sent his parents for their apartment was a loan, not a gift. Ms. Huang praises how clear headed she is, but suggests she wait until she has fully recovered before pursuing it. Lin Long says she has never been clearer, and she will never regret this divorce.

Seeing Lin Long in a New Light

The next day, Xu Chi tells Bu Tianna everything. From the moment Lin Long came out of surgery, she seemed to turn back into the Ms. Lin that Xu Chi first met when she joined the company, with sound logic, clear purpose, sharp thinking and decisive action. Bu Tianna notices Xu Chi now feels sympathy for her.

Xu Chi says it’s hard to know what’s really happening in someone’s life behind the scenes, and in that moment, only she could help. She describes how she used to think an induced labour was like on TV, where you go under and wake up fine.

In reality, even with a pain pump you throw up bile from the nausea, and afterwards someone has to press hard on your belly to clear everything out. Lin Long didn’t make a sound the whole way to the hospital, but Xu Chi could hear her from outside the door, not crying but wailing. Bu Tianna asks her to stop.

They switch to work. Bu Tianna expects to close Ande Energy that week, and Xu Chi tells her she has to treat everyone to a meal, ideally after Xu Chi gets back from Macao. Bu Tianna wonders what there is to celebrate when her dad doesn’t even care about such a small deal. Xu Chi asks what her dad has to do with it.

This is the first contract Bu Tianna has won entirely on her own merit, and even if others don’t value it, they should still celebrate themselves. Bu Tianna agrees, then asks why Xu Chi is going to Macao when she’s on Bolo Culture. Xu Chi explains Bolo is taking its IP overseas and negotiating with a company there about the European market. She also has some personal business to take care of.

A Morning Run and a Free Upgrade

Xu Chi and Ye Xinzhi go running together. He coaches her to adjust her stride and control her breathing, saying exercise is the best way to reset your energy. She jokes that men always talk a better game than they can deliver, and challenges him to a shuttle run race, which ends with him giving up.

He asks for her flight number to Macao so he can upgrade her seat for free, courtesy of Tianhe. He needs to brief her on the Digital Finance Forum during the flight, which he can’t do if she’s in economy. Xu Chi worries that since she’s going for work, it might look like she’s using company resources, and people could gossip.

Ye Xinzhi says she isn’t attending the whole forum, and bringing a date to a party is perfectly normal. If she can’t handle something this simple, how will she be his right hand? He tells her to bring a black dress, which is safe and foolproof for business events.

Overdressed in Macao

In Macao, Xu Chi shows off her outfit and asks if this is the kind of black dress he meant. Ye Xinzhi says she looks fresh and elegant, and asks where she got it. She explains the invitation said business formal, so she looked it up online. A blogger said men need black ties and women need knee length dresses, fancy jewellery and evening clutches, so she rushed to rent a dress and necklace, putting down a hefty credit card deposit.

He says the blogger wasn’t wrong, but at events like this, especially in tech, people dress more casually or they look like they’re trying too hard. She looks great, just a little overdone. With a small adjustment by removing the necklace, he declares her perfect.

The Real World of Consulting

At the Golden Bay Area Digital Finance and Industry Empowerment Summit, Xu Chi asks why Ye Xinzhi spends so much time on small talk about diving and kayaking. How does that help with work? He explains that clients instinctively trust that someone with a higher income better understands their investment needs and risks.

Business partnerships work the same way. Most deals are built on trust, not capability, and trust takes time and repeated interactions. Once she gets used to this circle, opportunities will open up naturally. When Xu Chi asks if he plans to move into digital assets, he asks if she knows why consulting has been shrinking for years, yet C&C still beats established foreign firms like hers.

The old consulting tricks are all over the internet now, so he has always stayed close to the front lines of real industries to give clients advice with substance. Otherwise, even if they fool a few clueless rich clients now, they’ll be left behind. Xu Chi asks if that’s why he briefly worked at P&J. He says that even though P&J is a consumer goods giant, its consulting budget shrinks every year.

When she starts to suggest he’s only chasing tech companies because they spend big, he asks what she thinks a consultant’s mission is. To raise the world’s management standards? No. It’s to get orders. Even a genius can only master three or four business areas, so you choose the ones with money and orders. Xu Chi mentions her internships in consumer goods, logistics and manufacturing.

Ye Xinzhi tells her the truth: if her first project hadn’t been an internet unicorn like Bolo Culture, she wouldn’t be standing here. Xu Chi remarks that ever since her interview, he has been brutally direct whenever they talk about work. He says playing with kids and training subordinates are completely different things, and welcomes her to the real world.

Meeting Wen Ruosen

Du turns up and teases Ye Xinzhi for bringing his little junior, who already looks overwhelmed. Ye Xinzhi explains that since they don’t work at the same company and rarely get time together, he brought her to see if she’s their kind of person. Du agrees she’s a blank slate, so it’s good for her to see more of the world.

Du and Ye Xinzhi spot someone they know coming down the stairs. Du immediately avoids being seen and rushes off. Ye Xinzhi, on the other hand, takes Xu Chi over and introduces his former mentor, Wen Ruosen, a legend in the industry. Wen jokingly warns Xu Chi that Ye Xinzhi has a silver tongue and she shouldn’t fall for his tricks. He mentions he has left consulting and now incubates his own projects. He introduces Tang Yisheng, or Tommy, CEO of Benyuan Digital Collectibles, the largest digital collectibles platform in Hong Kong.

Xu Chi reveals she recently collected a red envelope skin featuring the Northern Wei grottoes and would love to learn more. Tommy apologises for his poor Mandarin, then jokes that his Cantonese isn’t great either. They raise a toast and agree to talk more in future.

Quiet Intelligence Gathering

Out on the balcony, Ye Xinzhi asks if she’s tired. She isn’t. She has been busy noting the key points from Wen Ruosen and Mr. Tang’s private chat in Cantonese, and sends them to him. Wen has strong art world connections and runs a digital collectibles agency, a kind of gallery called Yuanzhou Gallery, which wants to partner with Mr. Tang’s Hong Kong platform.

Ye Xinzhi is surprised she speaks Cantonese. She explains the high school teacher who looked after her growing up is from Guangdong. He praises her for secretly gathering intel. Xu Chi says it was nothing. He had been talking about digital assets all night and zeroed in on those two collectibles players, and his eyes kept darting toward Mr. Wen, so she worked out what she could do for him. He calls her notes decent.

She has also organised every business card he received, with notes on key conversation points and quick profiles of each person, which she’ll export and send that night. She noticed many people discussing dual carbon targets and green finance, which she thinks will be a big trend, so she plans to research it when she gets back.

Ye Xinzhi says few people can stay that sharp in a social setting. Xu Chi says she isn’t here to see the world. She just wants to become his trusted protรฉgรฉ as fast as possible. She playfully asks her master if she did okay. He says not quite. She isn’t relaxed enough, and she’s been holding the same glass all night without drinking.

She reminds him he told her not to drink at these events. He says he told her not to drink recklessly, and besides, he’s here. As music starts, Ye Xinzhi guides her into a simple dance. He tells her they’re both too busy, and sometimes she should learn from him how to balance work and life. She laughs that he’s at it again.

Mr. Shen’s Teasing

Back in business mode, Xu Chi updates Mr. Shen. The research is about sixty percent done, with key interviews and modelling next, after which consultants like Cindy will each analyse a module before the strategic consulting begins. Shen says he only cares about results.

He then asks why Lin Long isn’t on the team, and whether she took his advice and went on maternity leave. Xu Chi’s silence tells him something has happened. When he realises it’s about the baby, he’s genuinely saddened and asks how Lin Long is doing. Xu Chi says she’s recovering.

Shen then notes that Xu Chi seems to be doing well herself, and that her boyfriend is handsome. She insists he’s not her boyfriend, just her senior. Shen pulls up a photo someone took of them dancing in Macao and asks if that’s how she poses with her seniors. Xu Chi steers him back to work, but he promises to send her the photo so she can run her own model on the odds of them getting together.

After the meeting, Xu Chi crops the photo down to just the two of them and saves it, replaying Ye Xinzhi’s words about not drinking recklessly because he’s there, and remembering him leaning on her the night he got drunk.

A Glimpse of the Photo

Xu Chi meets Ye Xinzhi to hand over research on some investment funds, done on her personal computer as he asked. He reminds her to keep his work completely separate from Maxmise files, and she assures him she has set up separate encryption.

She mentions that some information on a Yuanke Factory contact isn’t public, so she asked her close colleague Zhao Heng, who once assisted that person during an internship, to help. He asks how she’s coping with work on both sides. She says barely, but she has to earn every penny of the salary he pays her.

Ye Xinzhi corrects her that it’s just a red envelope, since he’s only teaching her a bit of Spanish on the side, not hiring her for a part time job. When Sha Sha calls asking for a file, Xu Chi opens her phone to send it, and he catches sight of the cropped dancing photo in the glass reflection.

That night, Ye Xinzhi messages Xu Chi saying he forgot to give her some documents that are too sensitive to email, and asks her to pick them up from his place after work. She replies that 10:45 works. When she arrives, he opens the door, surprised she was so quick, having assumed she was room service.

He tells Xu Chi not to bother changing her shoes. As she comments that he hasn’t eaten and it’s so late, she notices a wine glass with lipstick on the bench and a handbag and coat on the chair. A woman comes in from the balcony asking him where the potted plant she bought him has gone. Xu Chi is caught off guard, and the two women smile at each other.

Ye Xinzhi comes out, hands over the document and USB drive and thanks her for coming all this way. Xu Chi becomes flustered and quickly leaves.

Talking to the Mirror

At home, Xu Chi plunges her face into a sink of water and lets loose at her reflection. She calls herself an idiot. He definitely wanted her to see that. She’s been caught red handed. Who is she, and what right does she have to overthink anything? She got humiliated, didn’t she? Does it hurt? When a neighbour calls out to ask if she’s okay, she shouts back that she’s fine and apologises, then goes back to calling herself stupid.

Meanwhile, Ye Xinzhi’s friend, the woman from the apartment, tells him that was cruel. If they hadn’t known each other for years, she would never have helped with something so heartless, and asks why he’s upsetting that poor girl.

He says better she’s heartbroken now than later. He thanks her, saying he didn’t know who else to ask. She says it’s lucky she happened to be back in the country, then gently suggests that since he has been single so long, maybe he could consider dating.

Ye Xinzhi says he has tried before, but whenever he remembers what happened, he can’t bring himself to do it again. He’s too busy and has no energy left for love, so some sparks are better snuffed out early. Before heading to the airport, she reminds him to be kind to himself and to others.

Xu Chi calms herself down. The fact that he went to the trouble of staging this means there’s still hope, because otherwise he would have quietly cut her loose. So she needs to wake up while he’s still giving her a chance, and stop saving random photos. From now on, she’ll focus only on work. Her goals are her career and her apartment, not men. She deletes the photo.

Both of Them Overthinking

The next morning, Ye Xinzhi waits outside Xu Chi’s building to go for their morning run. He wonders if she is still asleep, or perhaps didn’t sleep all night. He silently apologises to her, but he knows it was for the best.

To his surprise, Xu Chi comes jogging around the corner. She cheerfully says good morning, teases him about having a sweet night and being up so early, and tells him to take his time running, calling him sir. She’s already done two laps and is heading up.

With nothing to say, he jogs off. Out of sight, she tells herself she did great and acted perfectly natural. Ye Xinzhi replays her breezy words, especially being called sir, and decides that after all that, he was the one overthinking it.

Bu Tianna Hits a Nerve

At the office, Bu Tianna is surprised Xu Chi is so free. Xu Chi explains the Bolo interviews are done and the initial model is built, so Cindy and the others are reviewing it while she waits for new tasks. She admits she’s a bit bored. She was so excited when she landed the project and ready to go all in for a year, but not even a third of the way through, she’s running out of steam.

Bu Tianna says consulting is a lot like art, shaping something raw into something refined, and the joy is in the creative process because you never know how brilliant the result will be until the final stroke. Bolo just wants to use her to get rid of people it doesn’t want, so however flashy her proposal is, she already knows the ending. There’s no suspense.

When Xu Chi asks how she knows so much, Bu Tianna says she interned at Beisen’s New York office in her second year of university and has led more projects than Xu Chi has dated men. Xu Chi says she’s only had one ex-boyfriend, and when Bu Tianna doesn’t believe her, she dares her to check her phone.

Bu Tianna finds the recently deleted folder and the dancing photo, instantly recognising the poser. She knew something was going on. Xu Chi insists they’re just master and protรฉgรฉ. Bu Tianna mocks that as something out of a TV drama. Xu Chi is a junior analyst at Maxmise and he’s a partner at C&C.

Being this close, she should be grateful nobody has reported her for corporate espionage. When Xu Chi says he’s only teaching her Spanish, Bu Tianna says that’s even worse. He’s handsome, wealthy and a big shot. If he didn’t want something from her, why would he bother? Does she think she’s some web novel heroine who finds cheat codes everywhere?

Xu Chi says there’s nothing he could want from her, and Bu Tianna’s just overthinking it. As she repeats the word, the humiliation of the night before comes flooding back, and she bursts into tears. A stunned Bu Tianna has no idea what she said.

Irreplaceable Episode 6 Recap: My Thoughts

I loved this episode, and it’s my favourite so far. We get a bit of respite from all the business talk (which I love, by the way), and we see the start of a romance!

That whole scene between Lin Long and Jiang Zhiwen made me so angry. The toxic home life and the immense pressure at work finally culminate in a devastating miscarriage. Seriously, divorcing a man like him is absolutely the right thing to do. She tried her best and apologised when she was in the wrong, especially during her mood swings, but he chose not to be present or care for his wife.

While she was a major antagonist in the early episodes, her grief was heartbreakingly acted, and her decision to finally choose herself and cut ties with him is a huge win for her character. I’m glad Xu Chi helped her through that time, and Zhao Heng was right. Lin Long will be back at work eventually, so it pays to be on her good side. It now looks like more than a truce between them.

The Macao arc was so much fun. It’s Xu Chi’s first real foray into Ye Xinzhi’s business world as she’s tested to see if she’s suited to what he needs. Their business lessons continue as she keeps shining and surprising him with how proactive she is.

Working side by side and navigating high level networking together pushes their dynamic into deeper territory, and those quiet looks and mutual reliance show a real shift from pure master and apprentice to unspoken romantic tension.

The dancing scene is the first time we see them interact physically. He was confident and had no trouble looking at her, while she was happy but also taken aback and shy. The dancing was a bit cheesy, but that’s fairly typical of Chinese dramas, so I’ll live.

I loved that little interaction with Mr. Shen, who was so concerned about Lin Long and couldn’t resist teasing Xu Chi about Ye Xinzhi. It was nice to see some non-business talk in the business world.

As she reflects on the photo later, it’s clear she has developed a crush on her mentor, with memories of him telling her she could relax and have a drink because he’d look after her, and of his drunken night leaning on her. Unfortunately, he spots the photo she saved and cleverly crushes her crush with the help of his friend.

They both know it was deliberate, and he wants to snuff it out before it becomes anything uncontrollable. Her whole scene of talking to herself in a panic was great. We finally saw her real self with her guard completely down, and having your feelings crushed so quickly is painfully relatable.

The jogging scene was funny too, as she managed to squash any ideas he had about her. Both of them were overthinking it! I also loved that instead of letting the setback derail her, she resolved to throw everything into her career and her apartment.

Bu Tianna unknowingly making her cry in the office was great as well. Xu Chi is crushed, humiliated and devastated, and it all happened so quickly that her emotions are all over the place.

The pace slowed down in the second half as we got to know our leads better outside the business world, and I loved how the show balanced heart fluttering closeness with career driven boundaries. The dialogue is great, and this emotional turning point has me completely hooked.
