Irreplaceable Episode 5 Recap

**SPOILER ALERT**

TL;DR (Quick Overview)

Xu Chi reveals how she trapped Lin Long with a staged call and disappearing ink, and Lin Long is pushed into early maternity leave just as her marriage hits breaking point. Ye Xinzhi shuts down any rumours by publicly introducing Xu Chi as his junior, then offers to make her his trusted personal right hand, quietly considering her for his mysterious Monte Cristo Plan. After her father dismisses her Ande Energy success, Bu Tianna gets drunk and reveals she was the girl Xu Chi saved at a subway station five years ago, while Zhao Heng proves he’s more sincere than he looks.

How the Trap Was Set

Xu Chi thanks Yang Rui and offers to take him out for a nice meal, admitting she owes him again. He waves it off, saying she’s a good girl and this isn’t the first time he has seen Lin Long going through her files. As her senior, he felt he should warn her, and he tells her to be more careful with her work from now on.

Bu Tianna immediately asks if Yang Rui has a crush on her, and warns her not to keep accepting his help without giving something back. Xu Chi changes the subject by asking Bu Tianna to thank Zhao Heng for her too, since he mostly helped because of Bu Tianna. She refuses and tells Xu Chi to thank him herself.

Getting down to business, Bu Tianna asks how Xu Chi knew Lin Long would take the bait. Xu Chi explains that after Yang Rui’s warning, she started paying attention. Because Lin Long used to be her mentor, they share the same company database account, so Xu Chi checked her browsing history and found it was mostly about C&C Consulting, Ye Xinzhi and Tianhe Air.

What Zhao Heng told her confirmed her suspicions. She then staged a phone call with “Richard” about a signed deal and documents being couriered over, knowing Lin Long was listening. As for the disappearing signature, she used a fading ink pen from a stationery shop. The writing stays clear for about half an hour, then fades as it oxidises in the air.

Zhao Heng calls it impressive and terrifying, swearing he’ll never cross her. Xu Chi says they just helped a friend together. Bu Tianna then turns to Zhao Heng and tells him he’s a good man, but he shouldn’t waste his time on her. If he spent that energy on another girl, she might be handing his kid a red envelope this time next year.

Zhao Heng teases that she’s already thinking about kids, when he was only thinking of some casual flirting. When Bu Tianna wonders how Sha Sha will handle Lin Long, Xu Chi guesses not much, thanks to labour law. But one thing is certain. She won’t be pushed around by Lin Long so easily anymore.

Sha Sha’s Ultimatum

Lin Long keeps repeating that Xu Chi set her up. Sha Sha asks whether Xu Chi’s accusations weren’t true anyway. If Lin Long hadn’t been so paranoid, constantly accusing and suppressing her, she would never have walked into the trap and things wouldn’t have escalated like this. Lin Long always says Xu Chi is scheming to replace her, but from where Sha Sha sits, Xu Chi plays the game far better.

She swallowed all her resentment and only let it out at the crucial moment, and she asked for a resolution without pressuring Sha Sha into one. Sha Sha says she doesn’t want to hurt Lin Long, but asks her to think calmly like a qualified consultant and tell her how she would resolve this in Sha Sha’s shoes.

Lin Long says if Sha Sha wants to fire her, she should just say so. Sha Sha snaps, asking why she’s being so sensitive and neurotic, and suggests she start maternity leave early. Lin Long refuses, since her due date is two months away and she intends to work until the end.

Sha Sha asks if she’s really fit to work. She hasn’t sent a single work report lately, and aside from monitoring Xu Chi, has she even been involved in any projects? Sha Sha tells her that choosing when to take leave is her right, but deciding what work she returns to afterwards is Sha Sha’s responsibility.

Lin Long Steps Away

Sha Sha tells Xu Chi they’ll need to stay in close contact with Bolo during the execution phase, and encourages her to learn from the directors she’ll be working alongside. When someone asks where Lin Long is, Xu Chi learns that she applied to HR for early maternity leave because she isn’t feeling well, and Sha Sha has handed her projects to Lu Le.

A colleague tells Xu Chi she managed what nobody else could. Xu Chi modestly says she’s only reaping what others sowed, and on Bolo Culture she’s just a grunt.

Still Dreaming of Unit 201

Xu Chi returns to No. 92 Yong’an Road. The agent recognises her, but Xu Chi admits she still can’t afford the down payment. The owner of Unit 201 keeps saying prices have dropped too much to make selling worthwhile, so the agent suggests he may be ready by the time she has the money.

Xu Chi asks her to contact the owner anyway so she can at least see inside, even offering to pay for the viewing. The agent agrees to try.

A Worrying Checkup

At her prenatal appointment, Lin Long’s doctor finds spotting and a short cervix, putting her at risk of premature labour. The doctor prescribes a week of progesterone and urges her to rest. Lin Long asks for something to help regulate her mood, explaining that lots of people say she’s emotionally unstable and she feels anxious and out of control.

The doctor says anti-anxiety medication must be used very carefully during pregnancy and her condition doesn’t seem severe enough to need it. Instead, she recommends talking more with her family and getting plenty of rest.

Coming Clean in the Car Park

Xu Chi waits for Ye Xinzhi in his parking garage. He asks what was so important she couldn’t say it over WeChat, and suggests dinner, but she explains she came here precisely to avoid running into colleagues. She confesses she used him as a decoy to trap Lin Long, the supervisor who forced her to drink at Wanghu Pavilion. He tells her to get in the car.

Xu Chi worries that Lin Long is spiralling and might keep spreading rumours while she’s on leave, and since he said the consulting world is small, could this affect him? Ye Xinzhi is amused that this is what she’s worried about, given how tough she was with Lin Long.

Since she has dubbed him a poser, he figures he must count as an eligible bachelor. He has been around plenty of women, married and single, and had all sorts of rumours made up about him. One more won’t cause much of a stir.

Xu Chi says she wouldn’t be here listening to him show off if Sha Sha hadn’t sent her a pointed message about not letting unnecessary rumours hold back her growth. He asks if her boss told her to be careful and she came to warn him. Xu Chi points out that the night he got so drunk was with Tianhe Air’s senior management.

Her little non story isn’t real gossip, but Tianhe used to be state owned, and small oversights can bring down empires. If rumours about leaks or corporate spies spread and people believe them, it could hurt his project, and then he might black out again.

Ye Xinzhi explains that he won Tianhe because of years of deep industry experience and C&C Consulting’s unique management model, not some movie style secret where one stolen USB drive topples a company.

He also doesn’t think Sha Sha was warning her. She sees real potential in Xu Chi and was giving her advice, since women face far more trouble in the workplace than men. Then he tells her to buckle up. She got promoted, so she owes him dinner.

Crisis Management, Ye Xinzhi Style

At the restaurant, Xu Chi says she’s happy to treat him but begs him not to go overboard, since the place doesn’t look cheap. Ye Xinzhi reveals he chose it on purpose. Members of the Da’ai Foundation Consulting Industry Chapter dine here every month.

Since she’s worried about rumours, he teaches her that the best way to handle a potential crisis isn’t to avoid it, but to take the initiative and give rumours nowhere to land. He walks her straight over and greets the group. He introduces Xu Chi as a junior whose family asked him to look out for her, though she ended up at Maxmise on her own.

He presents Du, formerly of Boen and now running his own firm, and of course Sha Sha, who happens to be there. He jokes that Xu Chi is stubborn and asks Sha Sha to keep her in line. Sha Sha tells him not to be so formal, proudly adding that Xu Chi is already key to her team, having come in through campus recruiting and made SBA already.

Du introduces the rest of the chapter, including Wang Teng of Tengfei Consulting and Wu Ming of Haowang Consulting, with a little teasing about Wang looking older than his age.

Shedding the Student Mentality

Afterwards, Ye Xinzhi asks if she’s mad at him for turning a perfectly decent young professional into a nepotism hire. Xu Chi admits she is a little, but she’s in no position to be precious about it because his method worked. As his junior, nobody will misunderstand, and her path is clearer.

He says there’s nothing wrong with being his junior, since even Sha Sha calls him senior. He only said a few words, which at most will stop Sha Sha being wary of her for pushing Lin Long out. Her friend Bu Tianna is the one with real connections.

Xu Chi insists Bu Tianna doesn’t rely entirely on connections and works hard too. Ye Xinzhi tells her she needs to let go of her student mentality. When she says that’s why she keeps telling Bu Tianna there’s no shame in using her network, he says that’s exactly the problem.

Phrases like “no shame” and “not entirely” suggest she’s fine accepting help, but deep down looks down on it. Times have changed. Consulting isn’t glamorous. It’s about making money for companies, and if she can’t understand society and capital faster than others, she won’t last.

Xu Chi asks if refusing help is also a student mentality, and he is pleased she caught his meaning. She explains that someone like her, who fought her way up, has never been lucky, yet he has been so good to her after interviewing her only once.

Ye Xinzhi warns her not to get carried away, because sometimes free things are the most expensive. Now that he’s a partner, he needs one or two trusted people who aren’t company people but his own, to handle things he can’t do himself without leaking trade secrets. She could be that person, which is why he has been paving the way a little. Whether it works out depends on her.

Xu Chi playfully answers as if he were royalty, accepting on the spot. When he asks if she even thought about it, she says her instincts already decided. Ambition has always driven her, and a year working for a C&C partner will teach her more than three years figuring it out alone.

The sooner she becomes a consultant, the closer she gets to her dream and her mother’s apartment. Why would she pass that up? He tells her the first step is to finish what’s on her plate and show she can complete a whole project on her own. He asks for her personal email so he can send her some public materials to study. When she seems eager for more, he warns her she’ll be crying from exhaustion soon enough.

Lin Long’s Marriage Crumbles

Taking her doctor’s advice, Lin Long cooks a big dinner to make peace with Jiang Zhiwen. He arrives late and says he never saw her message because he was busy, and he has already eaten. She apologises for losing her temper over his father buying the apartment, blaming her pregnancy mood swings.

She tells him she has started early maternity leave, so he won’t need to order takeout anymore and should come home early for her cooking. Zhiwen tells her he hasn’t been working late. He has been at the gym, and hasn’t touched carbs or greasy food for almost a month. Does she ever listen to him?

Lin Long says he doesn’t pay attention to her either. The doctor called him today about her risk of premature labour, and she was there when he had the doctor hang up. Has he said one caring thing since he walked in? Zhiwen accuses her of setting this up to play the sick card and force him to bow down.

Lin Long says she’s the one apologising and has already given in. He claims she just wants to show off how virtuous she is, as if he’s forcing a pregnant woman to do housework when they could hire a cleaner or order takeout. Why does she always look down on him from her moral high ground?

She begs him to have some conscience and at least pretend to care. She feels awful, work is going badly, and he knows she would never be home on leave this early if she had a choice. Zhiwen tells her to do whatever she wants and leave him out of it. He’ll take her to the hospital when her due date comes, and after that they’ll go their separate ways.

When Lin Long demands to know if his cold treatment is meant to force a divorce, he says nobody mentioned divorce. He just can’t stand listening to her. She should have the baby safely, they’ll still be husband and wife, and she should stop using divorce as a weapon or she’ll end up with nothing.

The Monte Cristo Plan

After Xu Chi says goodbye, Du asks Ye Xinzhi why he didn’t drive her home when she lives so close, saying he’s failing as an elder. Ye Xinzhi says he told her he had things to do. Du wonders what’s going on, since he was so protective in front of everyone and the two of them couldn’t stop talking over dinner. Ye Xinzhi says she’s different. He sees her as half a protรฉgรฉ.

Management consulting is basically partners leading their own teams into the field, and he needs his own trusted people. The ones before didn’t measure up, and he has finally found someone with both emotional intelligence and ability, so of course he wants to lock her in. Du asks if he’ll bring her into his Monte Cristo Plan. He says not yet. He’ll develop her first and see if she’s up to it.

Advice for Bu Tianna

Bu Tianna calls Xu Chi. She has almost finished the Ande Energy contract, but Mr. Pi plans to add Lu Le to the project. Since Lu Le is close with Lin Long, Bu Tianna worries she’ll stir up trouble out of resentment toward Xu Chi, and wonders if she should get Ande Energy to reject her.

Xu Chi tells her not to bother. First, she should trust that Maxmise consultants are professional. Second, Lu Le has been helping Lin Long all along and still couldn’t touch Xu Chi. Third, even if Lu Le tries something, responding after she makes a move gives Bu Tianna the higher ground. Bu Tianna agrees, saying one of the things she likes about Xu Chi is how efficient it is to talk to her.

Before hanging up, Xu Chi asks for advice. If a really tempting opportunity came along and she had already said yes, but afterwards it felt risky, would she regret it? Bu Tianna says no, because her instincts already made the call. Lucky breaks don’t come often in life, and if you miss one, it’s gone. So what if it’s risky? They’re young and can afford to lose.

Soon after, Bolo Culture and Maxmise formally sign their contract, and Xu Chi remembers her promise that this is only the first step toward becoming who Ye Xinzhi is now.

A Painful Family Dinner

Bu Tianna goes home for dinner, carrying the crispy pastries from Zhang’s that she drove out of her way to buy because her parents love them. Her little brother, Bu Tianjie, crashes into her and knocks them everywhere. When she scolds him, her father snaps that he’s her brother, not a brat, and accuses her of always causing trouble whenever she’s home and not acting like an older sister.

Bu Tianna protests that she only told him off and didn’t lay a finger on him. Her mother steps in and tells her father to stop picking on their daughter, since they haven’t seen her in almost a month. At the table, her mother suggests Bu Tianna join her father to play ball the next day with Mr. Huang, whose son is a year older than her and a VP at an investment bank.

Maybe his firm could even invest in hers. Bu Tianna tells her to just say it’s a blind date. Besides, Maxmise is a globally recognised consulting firm and doesn’t need investment, VPs at investment banks are everywhere, and whether he’s actually young and successful is debatable. Her father scolds her for talking back to her mother and says she isn’t even as polite as Jie, who happily joins in calling her bad.

Her father insists she’s going, since Mr. Huang watched her grow up. Bu Tianna fires back that her young brother is insulting her and nobody does anything, yet she gets scolded for a few casual remarks. She doesn’t know Mr. Huang, she isn’t desperate to marry, and she isn’t going.

Her mother tries to smooth things over by asking about work. Bu Tianna explains she’s about to sign a year long strategic cooperation with Ande Energy. Her father immediately notes it’s the company Yan Hongjun just acquired and says the kid really knows how to do him a favour.

He then drifts into praising Yan Hongjun’s son for joining a top law firm and speaking great French, and suggests signing Jie up for French, German and Spanish classes so he doesn’t fall behind the neighbours’ kids. Deeply hurt, Bu Tianna says work has called her back to the office and leaves, throwing the ruined pastries into the bin on her way out.

One Night to Let Go

Bu Tianna calls Xu Chi and demands she come drinking. Zhao Heng offers to come along, warning that a drunk Bu Tianna might be hard to handle alone. At the bar, a man tries to chat her up and quickly regrets it before being sent packing. Bu Tianna asks why Xu Chi isn’t asking what’s wrong. Xu Chi says she’ll tell her when she’s ready.

Bu Tianna admits she wanted to get properly drunk tonight, but a voice in her head keeps reminding her that she hasn’t finished her recommendations for Ande Energy and wondering what she’ll do with a hangover tomorrow. Xu Chi tells her to worry about tomorrow when it comes, and says she’ll drink with her because she brought a driver.

The Girl at Anyang Road

Bu Tianna asks if Xu Chi really doesn’t remember helping someone at Anyang Road subway station years ago. Five years earlier, a dizzy Bu Tianna, who hadn’t eaten in more than twelve hours, collapsed with low blood sugar. A young Xu Chi stopped, offered her orange juice she had just bought, then bread and crackers, and told her to take her time.

Xu Chi finally realises Bu Tianna was that girl. Bu Tianna teases her for being so slow, and says Xu Chi saved her that day, so she’s going to be really, really good to her from now on. We also see that Bu Tianna recognised Xu Chi on their very first day at Maxmise, when Deng Anran was mocking her.

Bu Tianna then explains why she was at that station. She had just discovered a consent form showing her mother was risking a late pregnancy so her parents could have a son. She was already twenty, and they had a boy behind her back.

She asks why. Wasn’t she their beloved daughter? She answers herself that she wasn’t. All they care about is their son. She has thrown herself into Ande Energy day and night to prove to her father that she’s capable of taking over his business, and he doesn’t care at all.

Zhao Heng Holds His Ground

When Zhao Heng starts to apologise on her family’s behalf, Bu Tianna tells him to shut up. She knows exactly what he’s thinking. Even if most of the Bu family money goes to her brother, some will still come to her, enough to turn his family’s fortunes around.

Zhao Heng tells her she’s wrong. He isn’t that kind of person. Bu Tianna insists she doesn’t have that much value to offer and tells him to wake up. He replies that he doesn’t need to wake up, because how much value she has is for him to decide, not her.

In anger, she throws red wine at Zhao Heng and makes a mess of his jacket. He jokes that she might as well finish the job, since she’ll buy him a new one anyway and he could use one. His earlier words echo in her head, asking why she’s so guarded and whether he can’t simply be drawn to her personality.

Bairui Apartments

Zhao Heng knows Bu Tianna lives at Bairui Apartments because he once couriered something to her. Xu Chi jokes she was about to book them a hotel room, and says no wonder Bu Tianna only likes him if he has helped her before. She asks if he really likes her friend. He says who wouldn’t like something beautiful.

Xu Chi tells him that what he does is his business, but he’d better not hurt her. Zhao Heng finishes her threat for her: or he’ll end up like Lin Long. He admits he is a schemer, but a different kind, without any of the messy bad habits. Whatever their relationship becomes, for now he’s at least a decent male colleague. Xu Chi tells him to stop looking at her like that because it’s creepy.

At her building, Bu Tianna insists she isn’t drunk and can make it upstairs alone. She’s reminded that no matter how bad things get, she only gets one night to wallow, because sadness is temporary but a career lasts forever. Bu Tianna promises to comfort them the same way next time they’re upset, then leans toward Zhao Heng and asks why he’s dodging, since she won’t eat him alive.

She reminds him she’s only paying to dry clean his jacket. Zhao Heng says to forget the dry cleaning and have a meal with him instead. Bu Tianna tells him in his dreams. As Xu Chi tries to leave, Zhao Heng begs for a ride, reminding her not to use him and toss him aside because they’ll be working together.

Irreplaceable Episode 5 Recap: My Thoughts

Episode 5 delivers an intense, fast paced climax to the workplace conflict while digging deeper into the characters’ personal struggles and past wounds.

The intelligence war hits its peak as we learn exactly how Xu Chi pulled off her trap, using a fake confidential document and a staged phone call to catch Lin Long eavesdropping and snooping through her files. When Lin Long falls for it, her manipulative office politics are completely exposed, and the fallout pushes her into starting maternity leave early. I found the resolution incredibly satisfying. I cheered for Xu Chi’s sharp wit, and it’s so refreshing to see a young female lead protect her own career without waiting for someone to rescue her.

Ye Xinzhi then gives Xu Chi a masterclass in shutting down rumours before they can spread, and the slow burn inches forward in a subtle, charming way. Xu Chi takes a leap of faith and agrees to become his trusted right hand outside the company to fast track her experience. I love how mature their dynamic is. His support is respectful, and the high respect, no groping professional tension is keeping me completely hooked.

Despite being the corporate antagonist, Lin Long gets a lot of emotional depth this episode. She tries to patch things up with her cold, indifferent husband and is met with pure cruelty. He cut off her doctor’s call about her premature labour risk, coldly says they’ll go their separate ways once the baby arrives, then turns around and warns her not to use divorce as a weapon. I went from frustrated to heartbroken. Her desperation at work feels so much more real now that I can see her marriage collapsing at the same time. No wonder she’s terrified of being replaced when her personal life is falling apart.

Finally, we learn more about Bu Tianna and her family background. We always knew she came from an influential, wealthy family, but now we see the serious rift between her and her father. She sits through an agonising family dinner where he brushes off her achievements and fusses over her spoiled younger brother instead. Looking for an escape, she calls Xu Chi for a drink, and I loved the scene where she completely lets her guard down. Xu Chi finally realises Bu Tianna was the girl she helped at Anyang Road subway station five years ago, who had fled after discovering her parents were trying for a male heir. This revelation cemented the bond between the two women for me. It truly feels like a real friendship forming, and their interaction was fantastic and so well written. I really appreciate that the show focuses on healthy, protective friendships rather than catfights.

Bu Tianna’s treatment of Zhao Heng is pretty harsh, but it also gives us a glimpse of the man he is: roguish on the outside, sincere on the inside. Seeing him step up for her alongside Xu Chi was lovely. Maybe he’ll be the one who can handle the firecracker that is Bu Tianna.
