TL;DR (Quick Overview)
Xu Chi seals the Bolo Culture deal, ends her probation early and earns a promotion to Senior Business Analyst, leaving Lin Long sidelined and seething, while a secret 500,000 yuan loan tears at her marriage. Xu Chi drives a drunk Ye Xinzhi home, discovers they’re neighbours, and gets a candid glimpse of the ordinary man behind his polished image over breakfast. Lin Long tries to frame her as a corporate spy and Ye Xinzhi’s mistress, but Xu Chi has already set a trap, exposes Lin Long’s snooping, and calmly lays out every way her mentor wronged her, earning Sha Sha’s respect.
Probation Over, Promotion Ahead
Sha Sha calls Xu Chi in, having heard from Lu Le that the Bolo Culture project has hit some snags. She tells Xu Chi to relax. She’s only just joined, and after how things ended with Lin Long, it’s understandable that progress is slow. Xu Chi surprises her by revealing that Bolo has approved her proposal. If Sha Sha leads it personally and brings in Mr. Pi plus a foreign global partner for show, the project should be good to go.
Sha Sha praises her and asks whether she has been confirmed yet. When Xu Chi says there are still a few days left on her probation, Sha Sha tells her it’s ending early. Once the contract is signed, she’ll be promoted to Senior Business Analyst, or SBA. Xu Chi asks whether Lin Long will still be her mentor. Sha Sha explains mentors are only for new junior analysts, so Xu Chi no longer qualifies. From now on, she’s on Sha Sha’s team.
The New Bolo Culture Team
At the project briefing, Sha Sha explains that a typical Maxmise consulting team has about five people: a partner who shows up once a week, a project manager and three consultants who are on site every day.
For Bolo Culture, Sha Sha will be project manager, with Cindy and Du Wen as consultants and a business analyst on the team. Because the client specifically asked for her, Xu Chi joins as an exception in the SBA role, and Sha Sha invites her to give everyone an overview of the project.
The office gossips that Xu Chi is killing it. Only a few months in and she’s already an SBA, the first of their intake to get there. The person who should be most embarrassed is Lin Long, who gave her such a hard time and now has no say over her at all. Lin Long watches Xu Chi present with envious eyes, repeating to herself that once this phase is over, she’ll take back everything she has given up.
Lin Long Loses Her Cool
Lu Le catches Lin Long drinking coffee and reminds her that pregnant women aren’t supposed to. She knew something would go wrong as soon as she heard the news, and asks why Lin Long couldn’t hold out a little longer, especially after doing such a good job playing along with her husband and Sha Sha. Lin Long can’t contain herself. Bolo Culture was her project from the start, yet Sha Sha put Cindy and Xu Chi on it without even asking her. Of all people, why those two?
Lu Le lays out the reality. The project will run another three or four months, and Lin Long can’t go on maternity leave halfway through. Xu Chi closed the deal, and Cindy has just finished Sato Pharmaceuticals and is free. If she were Sha Sha, she’d have made the same call. When Lin Long asks whose side she’s on, Lu Le says she’s saying this because she cares.
Xu Chi has truly come into her own, so the best thing Lin Long can do is stay calm and not give the office a show. She should focus on having her baby safely and come back swinging in six months. Lin Long says that sounds like a pep talk for someone walking to the execution ground. Lu Le replies that sometimes you have to hit rock bottom before you can bounce back.
A Secret 500,000
Lin Long’s insurance agent recommends a new endowment plan for her baby that funds overseas study later in life. She asks for the numbers, and learns that starting from birth on a fifteen year payment plan would cost about 120,000 per instalment. While checking her accounts, she discovers a 500,000 yuan transfer to a Jiang Yongge.
Her husband, Jiang Zhiwen, admits he lent the money to his parents and simply forgot to tell her. He thinks she’s overreacting. Lin Long is furious. She’s about to give birth, another big expense is on the way, and he handed over half a million without discussing it. He snaps that it wasn’t just someone, it was his parents. The postnatal care centre is already paid for, and diapers and formula can’t cost that much. He sarcastically asks if she wants to start saving for their son’s bride price too.
The fight drags up an older wound. Zhiwen mocks her for suddenly worrying about money when she had no such concern going out drinking with other people. Lin Long reminds him they agreed that was over and done with. He fires back that he threw a drink in that scoundrel’s face for her, and she yelled at him in front of her colleague. He’ll never get over it. Upset, Lin Long drives off late into the night.
The Deal Is Done
Meanwhile, Shen Jin messages Xu Chi that Bolo’s legal team has finished its review. They accept Maxmise’s team and quote and are ready to sign whenever she is. Xu Chi is thrilled, then looks up to find the office empty. Everyone else has gone home, so she celebrates alone.
A Drunk Ye Xinzhi
Leaving work late, Xu Chi spots Ye Xinzhi slumped against a tree outside Wangjing SOHO. He admits he’s a little drunk, then asks why she recalled her WeChat message and never sent it again. He waited a long time for it.
Before she can answer, he asks if she can drive, because he can’t find a designated driver, and tells her his home address is saved in the car’s navigation. She finds his black car, complains that it’s far too tall, and helps him in the car.
At his building, he tells her to drop him off and message him when she gets home, promising to treat her to a meal sometime. He then struggles to open his door, asking which finger it was and explaining he has only just moved in, until Xu Chi asks if he has a backup password. Unable to respond, she takes a punt and gets it right.
Just as she’s about to leave, she finds him collapsed on the bathroom floor and tells him not to sleep there or he’ll catch a cold. As she helps him up, a bottle of red wine crashes in the bathroom and splatters all over her white shirt. She gets him into bed, cleans up the broken glass, and looks up the wine online. It’s a 2023 Rainer Light Red from the Rainer Sauer estate, priced at 4,988 yuan.
As she’s about to head home, an urgent email arrives from Mr. Pi in London, asking her to update data in the low altitude economy report she compiled and send it to him immediately. She decides to do it on the spot and ends up falling asleep in Ye Xinzhi’s armchair with her laptop.

The Morning After
Xu Chi wakes just as the report sends, and Ye Xinzhi, now awake, asks what she’s doing there. She apologises and explains the urgent work request. He apologises in turn, admitting he blacked out and put her through all that.
Xu Chi tells him she’s not some naive little girl. It’s just being drunk, and she used to haul her ex boyfriend back to his dorm, so she knows drunk people all behave the same. She mentions the broken wine bottle in his bathroom, which he knocked over himself and which she cleaned up. He thanks her.
Then she starts laughing. When he asks what’s so funny, she does a perfect impression of him fumbling at the door, asking which finger it was and insisting he’d only just moved in. He’s mortified and hands her a glass of water to shut her up.
She tells him he seemed much more like a real person last night, compared with his usual serious, elite and high-end image. She adds that when she described him to Bu Tianna, she called him a poser.
Ye Xinzhi complains that a few days ago he was her idol and now he’s her joke. He tells her to learn from his mistake and not drink that much, even for work. When she gushes about his vibe, he begs her not to use that word, since he’s more like a big brother at best. She settles on calling him Ye the Legend.
Neighbours After All
Xu Chi says she needs to go because she has work in two hours, and turns down his offer of a lift because she lives just around the corner in the white three storey building. Ye Xinzhi realises it’s the 9 Days Inn.
She admits her room isn’t even a tenth the size of his, but it’s the same neighbourhood, so she clearly has the same good taste. She needs to rush home to wash her lucky outfit, the one she wore to land her first deal.
Ye Xinzhi blurts out that he’ll wash it for her, then quickly clarifies he didn’t mean anything by it. It’s a serviced apartment with round the clock room service that can get it done in an hour, and red wine stains are hard to shift. Since this is her first deal and clearly important to her, they can have breakfast while they wait, as his thank you for driving him home.
Breakfast With a View
Gazing out from the balcony, Xu Chi says she has lived in Beijing for years but never seen a view like this. When Ye Xinzhi points out that Maxmise’s building is taller, she says it’s different, because the view may be the same but the mood you bring to it isn’t.
She guesses his place must be expensive, but he says both the apartment and the car are company rentals. Once she makes partner on global pay, Maxmise will give her the same perk. In their industry, you’re barely home a few days a month, so home is just somewhere to keep your stuff.
Xu Chi thanks him for his encouragement and tells him Bolo Culture is only her first step. She is going to become who he is now. Ye Xinzhi says he’s not as great as she thinks. All the glamour and sophistication is just a front for getting by in the world, and plenty of people fall for it.
Behind the emperor’s new clothes, he’s an ordinary person who boils water for instant noodles and has his share of weak, useless moments, like last night, when he got wasted entertaining a client. Xu Chi is surprised that a partner still has to drink for business. He says of course. Life is about tirelessly trading what you have for what you want.
Xu Chi calls it a cheesy, outdated inspirational quote. She declares she’ll buy back her mother’s apartment, drink the same fine wine he does and become a partner just as great as him, one so formidable that clients won’t dare question a single word of her proposals. Ye Xinzhi says he’ll be the first to congratulate her.
She mentions that Zhao Heng thinks she’s just lucky, always pulling through at the critical moment, which is how she landed Bolo. Ye Xinzhi tells her not to be too modest, since even luck needs strong foresight. With Bolo, she grasped one key truth. Sometimes consulting isn’t about drawing up grand blueprints. It’s about being paid to be the client’s mouthpiece.
When the client wants something but won’t say it, the consultant proposes it. When the client wants something done but won’t take the blame, the consultant pushes it through. If it works, everyone’s happy. If it fails, it’s on the consultant. And the client is always right. Xu Chi decides that makes her sound very professional, which must be why Sha Sha promoted her so quickly. He warns her not to get cocky just because he praised her, then drives her to work.
Caught in the Car Park
In the parking garage, Bu Tianna spots Xu Chi getting out of Ye Xinzhi’s car, still in yesterday’s clothes. Xu Chi claims she pulled an all nighter. When Bu Tianna asks if that’s the polished poser she described, Xu Chi rushes to explain she ran into him buying breakfast, he gave her a lift, his building is right across the street and their car parks are connected. Bu Tianna points out she didn’t ask anything, and wonders if Xu Chi is feeling guilty.
Xu Chi turns it around, asking if Bu Tianna is just jealous she got promoted to SBA first. Bu Tianna says Zhao Heng has a better chance of winning her over than she has of being jealous of Xu Chi. Besides, Ande Energy will probably sign a project agreement with her this week, and it’s only twice the size of Xu Chi’s. Xu Chi offers her warmest congratulations and promises to be extremely jealous.
Then Bu Tianna drops the act. Ande Energy’s CEO once worked under her father, and plenty of people say the deal is nothing but a favour. Xu Chi points out that connections are resources too. Why else would Maxmise invest in its alumni network and keep former staff happy? Former employees bring in about half the firm’s business.
She mentions that even if Su Su quits, Sha Sha has arranged for her to get a generous severance and a personal recommendation letter. Besides, Ande’s money isn’t the CEO’s personal cash. If Bu Tianna’s proposal wasn’t good enough, it would never have passed internal feasibility, risk and legal reviews.
Xu Chi admits Bu Tianna had better resources and a broader perspective from day one, but she won’t dwell on what she can’t change. She has her own strengths, like rapid analysis and luck. As long as they’re strong enough, their weaknesses won’t become flaws. Bu Tianna corrects her: their flaws won’t become weaknesses. She asks whether Sha Sha or the poser taught her that. Xu Chi says she figured it out herself from all her battles with Lin Long.
Lin Long Sets a Trap
As they collect packages, colleagues notice Lin Long is also wearing yesterday’s clothes and wonder if something is going on at home. Unbeknown to Xu Chi, Lin Long saw her helping Ye Xinzhi home the night before, as well as him dropping her off at the office, and photographed them. Elsewhere, Zhao Heng discovers Bu Tianna has blocked him on WeChat. When he asks why, she says anyone with a shred of emotional intelligence wouldn’t need to ask.
Lin Long messages a contact named Celine, who works at Ye Xinzhi’s firm, asking what Richard Ye is working on. Celine says it’s Tianhe Air. He’s helping them move from a low cost differentiated service model to a full-service strategy, a transition requiring a ten-figure investment, which is why their boss poached him straight in as partner.
When Lin Long hints that she’s heard he’s getting close to some girl, Celine is doubtful, thinking his wife is a lawyer. Later, Xu Chi is overheard on the phone confirming that a deal has been signed, thanking Richard for everything and asking him to courier some documents over so she can review them right away. When Xu Chi heads to lunch with Zhao Heng, Lin Long rifles through her drawer and finds a confidential document receipt form with Ye Xinzhi’s name as the signee.
Accused of Spying
Lin Long storms into Sha Sha’s office to report that Xu Chi has seriously breached company standards and professional ethics. She claims Xu Chi didn’t win Bolo Culture alone. C&C Consulting partner Ye Xinzhi helped her, and he has even been feeding her his C&C projects.
How else could someone so fresh out of school land such a big deal? She suggests Xu Chi may be a corporate spy planted by a competitor to steal trade secrets and push Lin Long out step by step. Called in, Xu Chi says she doesn’t understand.
She admits she knows Ye Xinzhi, but says she met him at the industry summit Lin Long took her to, where Lin Long told her to network. Lin Long denies ever introducing them and accuses Xu Chi of lying. Sha Sha tells her to calm down and show her proof. Lin Long hands over the file, claiming it contains internal confidential documents from Ye Xinzhi’s new Tianhe Air project, with his signature on the confidentiality sign off.
Xu Chi asks to see it, saying she doesn’t remember any signature. When they look, the sign off section is blank. Lin Long is stunned. Xu Chi explains that she always collects industry information to sharpen her analysis, and this month she chose aviation.
The file contains Tianhe’s public annual reports, analyses compiled by other think tanks and data on other airlines. None of it is internal or confidential. Lin Long realises she has been set up. Xu Chi coolly remarks that Lin Long’s condition is genuinely concerning.
The Mistress Accusation
Lin Long pulls out her photos, claiming she saw Ye Xinzhi drop Xu Chi off that morning and that Xu Chi is his mistress. Sha Sha reveals he has been divorced for a long time. They attended Huaou Business School in different years, and he said so himself at their last alumni gathering. Still, she asks Xu Chi to explain the photos.
Xu Chi says a senior colleague stumbled and she lent him a hand. Is she really being smeared for that? They’re all women here and should know how vicious this kind of slander is. If the photo were taken from a wider angle, it would show Bu Tianna standing right there in the lift lobby. Would she really be so brazen in front of a colleague?
When Lin Long insists it’s all part of Xu Chi’s plan to replace her, Xu Chi finally snaps. She has held back because Lin Long is pregnant and her senior, but how much more is she supposed to take? The file was in her drawer, so how did Lin Long get it? Going through someone’s drawer is theft, and reading their files breaches the company’s confidentiality policy. She asks Sha Sha for the office surveillance footage.

Xu Chi Lays It All Out
Sha Sha tries to smooth it over, telling Xu Chi that young people can be too rigid and there’s no need to escalate. Xu Chi says she understands. As a newbie, she’s expected to keep her head down and be tolerant, especially with Lin Long pregnant, and that’s why she never told Sha Sha what Lin Long did.
But she asks Sha Sha to put herself in her shoes. As her mentor, Lin Long gave her no guidance on Bolo and banned her from speaking to the client. As her supervisor, she tricked her into drinking with an older man despite knowing she was allergic. And as a colleague, she has now attacked her reputation and her integrity. Isn’t that serious enough?
Lin Long screams that she’s being set up. Xu Chi calmly tells Sha Sha she knows Lin Long’s situation makes this difficult, and she’ll accept whatever decision Sha Sha makes. Sha Sha says she’s impressed by how well Xu Chi controls her emotions, and takes back what she said earlier. Xu Chi is more mature than she thought. Xu Chi asks if she can go back to work, and Sha Sha lets her go.
Irreplaceable Episode 4 Recap: My Thoughts
Seeing Xu Chi officially promoted to Senior Business Analyst after her success with Bolo Culture gave me a genuine sense of accomplishment. Her hard work is finally being recognised, and it couldn’t have happened to a more determined girl.
Lin Long, meanwhile, is still acting as the major antagonist, but I find her motivations surprisingly grounded in reality. Her envy and hostility feel very real for women in corporate environments facing or returning from maternity leave, and I appreciate that the writers have captured that specific kind of workplace panic rather than turning her into a cartoonish villain.
Then we get our first interaction between the leads outside the corporate world. Even our stoic, usually composed Ye Xinzhi can lose control, especially when he’s drunk. It’s interesting that the writers have put the two of them in the same neighbourhood, which makes it much easier for them to keep running into each other.
The morning after scene was hilarious! Xu Chi making fun of him for not being able to open his own door while he was completely mortified was such a joy to watch. I also liked how he gave her a dose of reality amid her lofty ambitions. Underneath it all, he’s just a normal person, and the industry is a facade.
I really appreciate that the show doesn’t force these two into overly romantic physical tropes this early on. Instead, the slow burn focuses on mutual professional respect, emotional security and mentorship, which feels so refreshing compared with some other recent workplace dramas.
And then the trap! Well done, Xu Chi, on catching Lin Long out! Hopefully now she’ll get off your back. Xu Chi is SO clever! Instead of staying silent, she laid out every grievance to Sha Sha while playing the perfect pitiful junior, setting Lin Long up to face the music. I literally screamed when I realised our smart girl had set her up. Watching her turn Lin Long’s own paranoia against her was the most satisfying moment of the show so far.
This episode really kicks off an intelligence war between Xu Chi and Lin Long, turning what could have been a dry office setting into a high stakes mental chess match. I’m also loving the pace. Rather than dragging out misunderstandings or relying on toxic tropes, the characters deal with issues cleanly, and there’s no unnecessary filler in sight.
