Irreplaceable Episode 1 Recap

**SPOILER ALERT**

TL;DR (Quick Overview)

Haunted by her mother’s death and determined never to be replaceable, Xu Chi takes advice from sharp consultant Ye Xinzhi, wins the Yangfan Cup and lands at top firm Maxmise. Her mentor Lin Long picks her thinking she’ll be easy to control, but Xu Chi’s speed, preparation and initiative quickly make Lin Long feel threatened, and her attempt to sideline her backfires when it turns out Mr. Pi personally recruited her. The episode ends with Xu Chi accidentally collecting Ye Xinzhi from the airport, reuniting the pair just as he notices she’s starting to think like a real consultant.

When Does the Race Begin?

Episode 1 opens with Xu Chi narrating over a string of life scenes. She wonders when life’s competition really starts. Maybe it’s when your parents defy the odds to end up together, or the moment one sperm and one egg beat billions of others to find each other.

From there you fight, you grow, you follow the path laid out for you, and you walk into a brand new battlefield. You wrestle with money and with love, you suffer more than you can count, and eventually you earn the right to smile.

We see her at the Beichen University commencement ceremony as she admits that even then, she can never relax. She is scared of failing, and even more scared that one day she will be replaced without any warning at all.

The Interview That Saw Right Through Her

A year earlier, Xu Chi lands a second-round interview for P&J’s summer internship program, even though those invitations normally go to second year grad students and she is only finishing her first year.

When asked about the biggest challenge she has faced, she says her parents divorced and she has been on her own since high school with no family behind her. She claims it doesn’t scare her, because it’s nothing compared to the brutal job market ahead.

Ye Xinzhi, P&J’s operations director, calls it a good story. Xu Chi replies that every story comes from real life, and smoothly brings up P&J founder Pang Li, who once said at an APEC summit in 2006 that storytelling and courage are the foundations of success. She says those words gave her the nerve to compete for this interview a year early.

Ye Xinzhi isn’t impressed. He breaks down her technique out loud: agree with the doubt, then glide onto another topic. He calls it stiff and straight out of a textbook. When another interviewer asks for her life motto, Xu Chi says she will always work hard and never let herself become someone who can be easily replaced. He asks if she is really that afraid of being replaced, then moves straight on to the next candidate.

A False Alarm

On results day, applicants crowd around the board. Some of the girls are still gushing about how attractive Mr. Ye was. Xu Chi arrives late after getting stuck in traffic, and a classmate teases her that she looks so glum she clearly hasn’t made it. Xu Chi bites back.

She is getting into P&J now, and later she’ll get into the top consulting firms Maxmise and Boen too. Someone scoffs that firms like that only hire from elite schools. Xu Chi fires back that people who lack ability always treat words like “always” and “usually” as ceilings they can never break through.

Her senior pushes through the crowd to check for her and reads out that she wasn’t admitted. Xu Chi is stunned. Then Ye Xinzhi appears, asks if she is too scared to look, and congratulates her. Her senior quickly admits he read the wrong line. She got in.

“I Want Money”

Ye Xinzhi asks why she suddenly lost her nerve when she was so confident before. Xu Chi insists she didn’t. She simply refused to believe she could fail. He tells her that’s big talk. She is good enough for a consumer goods company like P&J, but she still falls short for consulting.

Caught off guard that he knows her real goal, she launches into another polished answer about the industry’s top players and her childhood dream of becoming elite management talent. Ye Xinzhi cuts her off and tells her to stop reciting AI scripts. She tries again with something about international experience, and he stops her again, telling her to speak like an actual person next time.

That’s when Xu Chi finally snaps and shouts that she wants money. She tells him everything she said in the interview was true, not a story. Her mother took her own life. Her father married the other woman and had a son. She even had to borrow living expenses from her high school homeroom teacher.

She needs a lot of money to pay back what she owes, to work in Beijing, and to buy back the old apartment her mother could never let go of. She admits she chose the wrong major. As her undergrad wrapped up, she knew the big internet companies and investment banks were out of reach.

In grad school, her advisor ran a career assessment and said she was suited to management consulting, which also pays well for fresh graduates. The problem is her school isn’t prestigious, so her senior suggested starting with a summer internship at a Fortune 500 company and using that experience to get into a consulting firm.

Ye Xinzhi lays out the reality. Top consulting firms are barely hiring, and they still cut a third of their people every year. Sixty percent of new hires quit within the first year. He asks if she can really survive three years. Xu Chi says she is certain. She will never be replaced, and she’ll push out her competitors before they can push her out.

A Gentle Push in the Right Direction

Ye Xinzhi tells her to forget Maxmise, since they won’t take someone from a non-elite school. She should aim for Beisen instead, whose campus recruitment is far more open. If she places at Beisen’s Yangfan Cup, she gets a direct pass to the final interview.

He adds a few more tips. Lift her GPA, master logical methodology and read The Pyramid Principle. And drop the English name Tracy. In consulting, there are fifty Vivians, a hundred Lisas and two hundred Alexes. If she doesn’t want to be replaced, people need to remember what makes her unique from day one. He tells her Xu Chi is already a lovely name, pointing out that it comes from a classical line about a gentle breeze and lingering feelings. Then he wishes her luck and leaves.

In voiceover, Xu Chi reflects that there is always someone in this world who gives you a soft nudge when you’re lost. Every word Ye Xinzhi said became a precise coordinate guiding her through the chaos. She threw herself into the Yangfan Cup with everything she had and won an offer from the top consulting firm Beisen. Xu Chi and Ye Xinzhi were like two parallel lines, and after everything, she had no idea when their paths might cross again.

The Apartment With Flowers on the Windowsill

In Beijing, Xu Chi visits No. 92 Yong’an Road and asks an agent whether the second-floor unit with the flowers is for sale. It isn’t. Standing outside, she flashes back to her mother, Chengya, breaking down because her husband had left them for someone younger and prettier. In her final moments, Chengya apologised to Xu Chi and said she never meant to abandon her, but living simply hurt too much.

She had given everything to her husband, even selling the Beijing apartment Xu Chi’s grandmother left her to fund his business, and he still found another woman. She begged her daughter to keep working hard and keep striving even when she was alone, and never to end up useless like her, someone who could be replaced so easily.

Her biggest regret was selling that apartment. If they still had it, they would have a home to return to, and she could have watched the windowsill flowers bloom and her daughter grow up just like before. Young Xu Chi was left screaming for her father.

Back in the present, Xu Chi looks at a listing for a three-bedroom unit in the Yong’an Road complex priced at 4.5 million. She quietly tells her mother that she already has an offer from a Beijing consulting firm, and asks her to wait just a little longer. She will buy their old home back.

First Day at Maxmise

At Maxmise’s orientation, the new hires gossip that this year’s session is being run by Samantha, who is about to become a junior partner. Maxmise North China only has two partners, Mr. Pi and Mr. Li, and Samantha is Mr. Pi’s right-hand woman.

Zhao Heng spots that Xu Chi’s name is written in pinyin and asks how to say it. Deng Anran sneers that she doesn’t even have an English name. Xu Chi calmly explains her name and its poetic origin, and says she kept it because she thinks it sounds nice. Zhao Heng agrees. They’re all Chinese working at a company in China, so English names always feel a bit odd to him.

He introduces himself, and Xu Chi immediately recognises his name as that of Emperor Zhenzong of Song. Impressed, he explains his dad loved that an emperor had the name, then worried he wouldn’t live up to it. Zhao Heng didn’t think he could either, so he changed it to Ben, then jokes that it basically means dumb. Xu Chi laughs that he’s actually great at dad jokes.

When Zhao Heng mentions he studied economics and management at SJTU and asks about her, Xu Chi only says applied statistics. Deng Anran pounces, saying she must be dodging because her school and name aren’t worth mentioning. Deng Anran adds that the job market is so bad even Maxmise cut ten percent of its senior staff, half of them will be gone within a year, so there’s no point pretending to be friends.

Bu Tianna Puts Deng Anran in Her Place

Bu Tianna steps in. She asks if Deng Anran is really that confident in her abilities, then quizzes her on the budget for Maxmise’s global partnership team. Deng can’t answer. Bu Tianna tells her it’s two hundred million, then asks which prestigious school she attended. When Deng Anran finally says Cornell, Bu Tianna remarks that she expected one of the true top schools, and Cornell only just scraped into the Ivy League.

Samantha, also known as Sha Sha, then arrives, apologising for running late. Deng Anran gives Bu Tianna a dirty look, knowing she had been fooled to think she was Sha Sha and had backed down from giving Xu Chi a hard time. Bu Tianna looked satisfied at her little ruse.

Sha Sha welcomes everyone, explains that their title is Business Analyst, and says each of them will join a team, be assigned a senior mentor and work as that mentor’s assistant. She promises Maxmise will give them the best and fairest chance to grow.

Lin Long Makes Her Choice

Behind the scenes, the mentors are choosing their mentees. Cindy, whose Chinese name is Xin Di, notes that Bu Tianna’s scores are practically perfect and her internship record is top tier. Lin Long warns everyone not to fight her because she’s taking Bu Tianna.

Cindy fusses that Lin Long looks awful and shouldn’t push herself so hard. Lin Long says she has no choice. She has a massive mortgage and a baby on the way, and if she doesn’t grab a capable assistant, her projects will be stolen just like the Sato Pharmaceuticals deal.

Cindy insists that wasn’t her fault. Sha Sha wouldn’t let Lin Long fly because of her pregnancy, so Cindy was told to take over. She then rubs it in by offering to pick up some duty-free skincare on her overseas trip, since someone as irritable as Lin Long gets wrinkles fast.

In the end, Lin Long chooses Xu Chi, and Bu Tianna goes to Cindy. When the mentors walk in, Lin Long tells Xu Chi she felt they were destined to meet when she saw her at the front desk earlier. Lu Le shows the new hires around, explaining that Maxmise doesn’t run a nine to nine, six-day schedule or force overtime, but they’d better get used to very little sleep.

Bu Tianna mentions she only slept six hours a night during her Seattle internship, and Zhao Heng jokes that they’re all here to be tortured. Lin Long has placed Xu Chi’s desk directly across from her own so they can communicate easily.

Privately, Lu Le asks why Lin Long handed Bu Tianna over to Cindy. Lin Long reminds her of the Qianhai Bank project. Bu Tianna’s name was listed as the beneficiary of Mr. Bu’s family trust at Siwei Group. Lu Le realises that’s why Mr. Pi interviewed her personally. She’s rich, connected and capable.

Lin Long explains that if Bu Tianna joined her team, by the time she returned from maternity leave her projects would be stepping stones for her mentee. She’d rather let Cindy find out what it’s like to do the hard work for someone else’s benefit. Lin Long has always worried about being sidelined because of her time off, so why would she want a mentee that strong?

Xu Chi seems steady. She took the insults at orientation without snapping back, and Lin Long thinks she doesn’t fight or scheme. She doesn’t know much about Xu Chi’s background beyond the lack of an overseas degree, but as long as Xu Chi follows orders during her leave, that’s all that matters.

The Intern Who Did Her Homework

Xu Chi brings Lin Long some chocolate, having read it can help when you’re feeling unwell. Lin Long is touched. She walks Xu Chi through the handbook and gives her a first task, pulling data on Bolo Culture from the database for a basic analysis.

When Xu Chi says it’s no problem, Lin Long gives her a tip. New starters shouldn’t agree to everything so readily because it sounds too much like a student. In the workplace, you shouldn’t say “no problem” unless you can genuinely take responsibility for the outcome.

Cindy suggests Lin Long head home before she collapses and someone has to call an ambulance, which would hold everyone up. Lin Long snaps back that she can manage, and with Cindy off to Japan, she’ll be the one cleaning up any mess left behind.

Not long after, Xu Chi tells Lin Long the report is already in her inbox. Lin Long is surprised and gently tells her there’s no need to rush to prove herself, adding that Maxmise has its own formatting rules unlike school assignments. Then she opens it and finds a proper table of contents, executive summary, project background and integration challenges.

Xu Chi says she did her homework. Lin Long is impressed but asks where she got data from Nielsu and other research firms, since Maxmise never purchased them. Xu Chi says she bought it herself. When Lin Long asks how a student could afford such expensive databases, Xu Chi explains that if you want to get into Maxmise, you have to pay some tuition yourself, and being prepared is never wrong. Lin Long praises the report and hands her the Yuanming project files too.

Meanwhile, Ye Xinzhi

At an airport, a woman approaches Ye Xinzhi. She has been watching him for a while and noticed his obsessively organised folders, every file ending in V1, V2 and V3, and his plain blue slide templates with no images. She guesses he’s a consultant.

He reads her right back, correctly guessing she is a public relations executive at Beihuan Air. She is heading to Beijing for a headquarters meeting and asks if he’d like a drink after they land. He politely declines, saying he has work, but tells her he has a feeling they’ll meet again soon.

Sure enough, we next see Beihuan Air staff, including the executive from the lounge, being thanked for their years of service before HR meets them one by one to discuss their packages. Ye Xinzhi explains that every business war has casualties, and a consultant’s job is to win the most with the smallest sacrifice and keep companies from bankruptcy and restructuring.

When challenged on whether he’d still say that if his own company was laying him off, he says top consulting firms worldwide have been cutting staff for two years. Even the best organisations need constant elimination and evolution. No one is irreplaceable, not even him.

The Big Gun From Headquarters

A project team is falling apart. The delivery is due tomorrow, everyone is running on coffee, and their lead has just had a heart attack. Headquarters is sending help, and Ye Xinzhi walks in. The team whispers that he is the fastest promoted partner at C&C Consulting and the man who closed the Beihuan Air project single handedly.

He praises their work so far, then gets straight to it. He cancels delivery files 003, 007, 013 and 021, and merges 004 with 009. With everyone working together, he estimates eight hours to finish. But first, he sends them all back to their rooms for five hours of rest.

When they panic about tomorrow morning’s meeting, he reveals he has already moved it to four in the afternoon. Exhausted people work poorly. One team member is amazed but admits he just downed two huge cans of Red Bull and can’t possibly sleep.

Xu Chi Spots What Others Missed

Back at Maxmise, Xu Chi emails Yang Rui to flag problems in the Yuanming project data. Yang Rui immediately sends Deng Anran to the construction site to verify the numbers. Deng Anran returns soaked, and Zhao Heng suggests she use the hairdryer in the restroom. She complains that she never imagined Maxmise would mean this kind of suffering.

Her mentor had her at a site at half past five in the morning checking data even the VPA system couldn’t pull. Xu Chi is first in the office again, and the receptionist confirms she’s first every single day. Deng Anran calls it scoring points. Bu Tianna says she’d happily go to a site to score points too, but she has no clients and her mentor is no help at all.

Office Gossip and the Golden Rule

Over lunch, Lu Le tells Lin Long she’s lucky to have a mentee so ready to work. Another colleague says it’s no wonder Sha Sha made an exception to hire her, unlike Du Wen’s mentee, who can’t even manage a simple tool like SPSS. Lin Long shrugs that it won’t last. After the three-month probation, at least half the interns will be gone.

Lin Long asks for updates on Cindy. Lu Le reports that Cindy invited Mr. Zheng from Dongfang Data for golf and dinner and asked Bu Tianna to come along. Bu Tianna said she already had plans. Before Cindy could react, Mr. Zheng called to cancel the dinner. Lin Long enjoys this.

Cindy thought she’d found a gem and now has to swallow the loss. If you want to climb, you pay the price. Together they repeat Maxmise’s rule: get promoted or get out. Then they toast.

Xu Chi Asks for a Seat at the Table

Back in the office, Sha Sha catches Xu Chi browsing property listings and teases her about wanting to buy an apartment so soon after graduating. Xu Chi says the agent sent it and she was only looking. She mentions she’s working on the Bolo Culture proposal and will send it once Lin Long reviews it.

Sha Sha says Lin Long has been praising her a lot lately and asks how she gets in so early. Xu Chi says she lives around the corner near the diplomatic compound. Sha Sha assumes that must be expensive, but Xu Chi clarifies she has a long-term standard room at a nearby 9 Days Inn.

Sha Sha thinks it must be tiny. Xu Chi says it’s bigger than her dorm. It costs a bit more than a studio, but she’ll be working at least ten hours a day and travelling at least eight times a month. Compared with a landlord who could kick her out anytime, a hotel with round the clock hot water and Wi-Fi suits her better.

Sha Sha asks why she pushes herself so hard. Xu Chi replies that if she didn’t, Sha Sha wouldn’t have noticed her or asked the question. She then asks to join Lin Long at the proposal meeting if Sha Sha thinks her report is good. Sha Sha says interns have never attended proposal meetings. Xu Chi says her report will prove she’s already working at a full-time employee’s level.

Sha Sha Sides With Xu Chi

Cindy suggests to Sha Sha that Bu Tianna get some site experience since Yang Rui’s team is swamped. Sha Sha sees right through it. Cindy just wants to knock Bu Tianna down a peg because she doesn’t listen. Sha Sha tells her to think bigger as a mentor. Bu Tianna is a fine blade that needs sharpening, not dulling on a construction site.

Sha Sha tells Lin Long the Bolo Culture documents are good but a little conservative, and asks her to bring Xu Chi to the proposal meeting. She’s young and perfect for connecting with the new unicorn startup founders. Sha Sha also mentions Mr. Pi wants the team to help at an upcoming industry summit.

Cindy Plants the Seed

Cindy confronts Lin Long. Bu isn’t a common surname, so she’s worked out exactly why Lin Long passed Bu Tianna to her. But she has news of her own. Even Lin Long has been fooled by Xu Chi. The proposal meeting invitation came because Xu Chi went to Sha Sha herself. Cindy points out Lin Long has been leaving before eight while Xu Chi handles most of the work, and she had accepted Xu Chi’s offer to cover so she could rest.

Cindy then explains why Yang Rui’s team is so stretched. Xu Chi found his data error and emailed it under Lin Long’s team name, after asking Lin Long’s permission to contact Yang Rui’s team directly. Lin Long had agreed, since her team is the front end and his is the back end. It embarrassed Yang Rui, and Deng Anran was forced to recheck every figure on site.

Cindy reminds Lin Long how Deng Anran mocked Xu Chi on day one. Xu Chi waited until everyone forgot, then got her revenge, using Lin Long as a pawn. Lin Long refuses to believe it, but Cindy warns that Xu Chi is more calculating than she is. She has already gone over Lin Long’s head to Sha Sha, and by the time Lin Long returns from leave, her spot could be gone.

The Unauthorised Workshop

Lin Long goes looking for Xu Chi and finds her in Meeting Room B with visitors, discussing how a strategy serves national priorities like rural revitalisation, healthcare, emergency response and down-market e-commerce. Lin Long pulls her out. Xu Chi explains they’re from the Beijing Low Altitude Economy Industry Research Institute. The Yuanming drone logistics project has policy issues, so she invited them for a workshop, and she had raised it with Lin Long the day before.

Lin Long says she only agreed to consider it, not to do it immediately. She fires off questions. What are their titles? How credible are they? Is Xu Chi just grabbing random people and trading on Maxmise’s name? Did she get a budget for appearance fees? And does she think a bit of praise means she can make her own decisions now?

Xu Chi calmly answers. The man at the far end is Deputy Director Zheng, and beside him is Section Chief Song, who oversees the district’s low altitude economy. No budget was needed because she traded a free copy of Maxmise’s Southeast Asia logistics industry report. She got them in so quickly because she once did a winter internship at Mr. Zheng’s company, Tiandi Logistics, and he has always thought well of her.

Lin Long asks who gave her permission to give the report away for free. Xu Chi silently points her fingers upwards in response. Coffees arrive, and Xu Chi asks to finish the meeting before they continue. She hands Mr. Zheng his favourite oat latte and Mr. Song his Americano. As they leave, Mr. Song asks her to keep him updated on the project.

Sent Away to Run Errands

Bu Tianna passes on a message. Lin Long has gone out and says Xu Chi no longer needs to attend the Bolo Culture workshop that afternoon. Instead, she’s to help the short-staffed Conference Team at an industry summit at Dongfang Hotel. Bu Tianna asks if she’s being pushed down for performing too well. Xu Chi doesn’t care.

It was made clear on day one that mentors are just mentors, and whether an intern stays is ultimately Sha Sha’s call. As long as she stays at Maxmise, the tables could turn in a couple of years. Bu Tianna says she’s glad someone else understands that too. At the hotel, Xu Chi hauls supplies with difficulty and confirms halal and vegan options for the lunch guests. Mr. Pi spots her.

The Truth About Xu Chi

Lu Le asks Lin Long if she really sent Xu Chi to do grunt work. If she wanted to cut her down, she shouldn’t have been so obvious, because Mr. Pi knows. Lin Long argues Deng Anran was sent to a construction site, so why can’t Xu Chi help at a hotel? Lu Le sits her down and spills everything. Xu Chi didn’t come from an elite school, so how did she get into Maxmise? She and the SJTU team won first place in Beisen’s Yangfan Cup, and Mr. Pi judged it himself.

She planned to join Beisen, but when Beisen moved its headquarters to Shenzhen this year, she hesitated. The moment Mr. Pi found out, he sent her an offer. Her GPA is 3.95. And just last night after midnight, Mr. Pi came into the office for some files, heard about Xu Chi’s workshop plan, read it, liked it and approved sharing the report for free on the spot.

By sending her off to do errands, Lin Long has basically slapped Mr. Pi in the face. He has already called the Conference Team demanding to know why a project colleague was pulled into errands. Lu Le warns her that with competition this fierce and Xu Chi clearly capable, angering Mr. Pi over her could make Lin Long’s working life very hard.

Lin Long calls Xu Chi and tells her to come back after collecting a guest from the airport, since Mr. Pi has scolded them over her. Xu Chi confirms she has the pickup sign.

The Knight and the Queen

Xu Chi thanks Bu Tianna, who reveals she told the lobby manager at Dongfang Hotel to ask Mr. Pi to step out for a chat. Xu Chi asks why she keeps helping her. Bu Tianna says she’ll be a partner one day and wants to start building her inner circle early. Xu Chi replies that it’s a shame, because when she plays chess, she’s no good as a knight. She only plays the queen. Bu Tianna seems amused.

Wrong Man in the Back Seat

In the car, the man beside Xu Chi takes a call about wrapping up the Beihuan Air project and starting on Tianhe. Xu Chi tells him they’ll reach the hotel in half an hour and his room service Caesar salad is on the way. He says he hates Caesar salad and asks if she picked up the wrong person.

Xu Chi has the driver pull over and sees the card: Richard Ye, Dongfang Hotel. She calls the real Mr. Yi, who is still waiting for his luggage, and tells him to take his time. Then she apologises to Ye Xinzhi for not double checking the name and gives him two options. She can take him back to the airport, or if he’s in a hurry, have the driver take him to the hotel while she gets out and books another car for Mr. Yi. He picks the first.

Ye Xinzhi asks if she remembers him. Of course she does. He notes she owned the mistake cleanly, didn’t shift the blame and quickly gave the client options to choose from. She’s starting to look like a consultant, and he congratulates her on getting her wish. When she gives only a quiet thanks, he asks if things aren’t going well. She says it isn’t that, and he lets it drop.

At the airport, Xu Chi collects Mr. Yi, while Ye Xinzhi is greeted warmly by an old acquaintance who tells him Wang Yu is hosting a welcome dinner for him. Later, Xu Chi looks him up and finds his career: associate partner at EY Heyi Consulting from 2017 to 2022, operations GM at P&J until 2023, then CMO at Ande Energy, and now global managing partner at C&C Consulting. That night, a package is delivered to Ye Xinzhi’s room with a note from Xu Chi apologising once more and thanking him.

Irreplaceable Episode 1 Recap: My Thoughts

And we are off with a bang! We’re thrown straight into the cutthroat world of consulting in Beijing and what it takes to survive in this industry. We meet our leads right away, and within the first few minutes we can tell that Xu Chi is young and highly ambitious, starting out in the corporate world and ready to take it by storm. Ye Xinzhi is the highly experienced consultant who doesn’t take bullshit and can see right through you. He’s super intelligent and successful, and not someone to be messed with.

Within ten minutes, we get a quick snapshot of Xu Chi’s background, and Ye Xinzhi’s openness about how to make it in consulting kicks off their unofficial mentorship.

The drama wastes no time introducing its characters, the office rivalries and the intense competition. Bu Tianna is going to be a great character to watch! Senior consultant Lin Long already feels threatened while thinking she has the upper hand, and Xu Chi is making enemies before she’s even warmed her seat. We can already tell she’s super smart and will be one of those characters who outsmarts and outmanoeuvres every scheme thrown at her.

So far I’m loving this high stakes, fast paced office drama. The cast feels well chosen, and the script moves quickly but is really enjoyable as we get a taste of what it takes to make it big in China.
