TL;DR (Quick Overview)
Ye Xinzhi reveals that Wen Ruosen once made him the scapegoat for a disastrous project, and that he has spent years quietly setting a trap to make him pay. At Wen’s exhibition, Ye Xinzhi publicly introduces Xu Chi as his girlfriend and the broker of a Morse financing deal, while Bu Tianna fiercely defends Zhao Heng from his mocking college roommates. Using horoscopes, a staged tantrum and a hidden clause, Xu Chi outplays Wen and locks him into a deal he’s almost certain to lose, leaving Ye Xinzhi impressed but quietly insecure about keeping up with her.
Ye Xinzhi’s Past
Xu Chi asks what Ye Xinzhi is planning to do to Wen Ruosen. She knows Wen was his mentor and that Ye Xinzhi worked under him before leaving the firm, but he asks if she knows why he left Boen. Back then, Wen was a junior partner, and Ye Xinzhi was a young consultant who looked up to him like an older brother.
Boen won a project to transform Jingshang Department Store, and Wen led the team with a plan to turn it into a chain brand. Halfway through, Wen realised the plan didn’t suit local conditions and would cause huge losses, so he suddenly promoted Ye Xinzhi to project manager. Ye Xinzhi thought he’d been spotted as a rising star. Xu Chi finishes the thought: Wen did it to save himself and make Ye Xinzhi take the fall.
Less than two months after the handover, the sixty-year-old Jingshang hit disaster. Boen’s reputation was wrecked overnight, and headquarters spent an eight figure PR budget to contain the scandal. As project manager, Ye Xinzhi had to resign. Wen faced no consequences, even though hundreds of Jingshang employees lost their jobs.
Wen even wrote Ye Xinzhi a glowing recommendation letter, and for a while Ye Xinzhi was grateful, until every consulting firm in Beijing rejected him and the truth dawned on him. Xu Chi starts to say he was naive, and he admits she means naive and foolish. She says she has always wondered what he was like back then.
Rebuilding From Nothing
Having lost almost everything but refusing to give up, Ye Xinzhi moved south to the Pearl River Delta, where homegrown consulting firms were booming. He erased Boen from his rรฉsumรฉ, joined a mid-sized Hong Kong backed firm and slowly built a reputation. That’s where he met Du, who recruited him to start a venture together.
Ye Xinzhi later learned Wen had also screwed Du over, and Du’s father was a long time Jingshang employee who lost his job. Victims deserve compensation, and Wen has to pay the price just as Ye Xinzhi did.
It took him two years to land a project for a major American brand launching in China, which won a silver Constantine Award, the International Consulting Alliance’s highest honour. With that, he finally had the money to compensate Jingshang’s victims and earned his way back into the top consulting circle.
He then joined P&J for hands on operational experience before moving to C&C. Xu Chi realises that’s when he interviewed her. She asks what she was like in his eyes, some clueless kid pretending to be elite? He says she was a proud, promising young woman who shone bright.
Officer Rabbit Joins the Plan
Xu Chi asks if all her research is meant to set a trap for Wen. He says yes. She wonders if Wen has no defences, since surely he knows what he did. Ye Xinzhi says Wen has hurt so many people he can’t keep count, and has long since rationalised it all as no big deal.
Besides, Ye Xinzhi texts him every holiday and is always grateful when they meet, so Wen has no guard up at all. Xu Chi calls him a crafty old fox and declares herself Officer Rabbit, ready to help take Wen down. Ye Xinzhi says she already has.
He shows her messages from Wen, who has noticed Ye Xinzhi’s posts with Mr. Deng from Morse and is fishing for how close they are and how interested Morse is in the metaverse economy. Xu Chi pieces it together. Wen’s Yuanzhou Gallery resells high priced digital collectibles by famous artists, so its valuation is sky high, but it has never made a profit and Wen is drowning in debt.
To keep his valuation up, he needs new business, which is why he kept pushing Benyuan, Hong Kong’s largest collectibles platform, to invest. That deal has stalled. Ye Xinzhi explains that he had Du prepare several rounds of free financial analysis for Benyuan’s major investor, Yong’an Trust, which then pulled out.
Now Wen needs other funding. He approached Morse before and got nowhere, so seeing Ye Xinzhi working closely with Morse on Tianhe, he came to him to broker financing. Wen is holding a digital collectibles exhibition on Thursday night, and Ye Xinzhi has invited Mr. Deng on Wen’s behalf. But since he’s working for Morse, there are things he can’t say. That’s why Xu Chi will work on his behalf, his irreplaceable, shining Officer Rabbit and girlfriend.
My Partner Won’t Like It
At the exhibition, someone asks what Ye Xinzhi has been up to, and he jokes he has been busy putting together a wedding. When a woman invites him for a drink after the event, he says his partner wouldn’t be happy. Xu Chi asks what she said and who his partner is. He tells her it’s her.
Xu Chi grumbles that they’re late because he insisted on stopping at a convenience store to buy a sandwich so she wouldn’t drink on an empty stomach, and they got a parking ticket. Du tells her she should know by now that Ye Xinzhi was worried about her. Ye Xinzhi says Chi knows him best. Du asks her to keep him from going off the rails. She says she has no sway over him, then warns him someone is coming for him.
Zhao Heng and Bu Tianna arrive. Bu Tianna is coolly polite, and Zhao Heng introduces himself as Xu Chi’s good buddy and Bu Tianna’s close friend, gushing that he has studied all of Ye Xinzhi’s classic cases.
Ye Xinzhi tells him to call him Richard, and as Chi’s boyfriend, thanks Bu Tianna for looking after her at Maxmise. Bu Tianna replies that Chi is hers, so it’s only natural, and there’s no need for him to be polite. Ye Xinzhi excuses himself to join Du.

A Romance Scam?
Bu Tianna asks Xu Chi why she was invited and why she’s dressed for photos when she’s under investigation for financial issues. Xu Chi explains Ye Xinzhi has a side project he can’t front himself, and since she’s free, she’s helping. Bu Tianna asks if they’re really together, then worries that working on his side project is risky. He strung her along before, and now he’s preying on her. This is a romance scam.
Xu Chi asks her to trust her judgment. Bu Tianna says she knows all too well how little judgment a woman in love has. Xu Chi tells her that by bringing her here and announcing to everyone without hesitation that she’s his girlfriend, while she’s still under investigation, Ye Xinzhi is staking his own reputation in the consulting world to vouch for her.
That alone is huge support. Bu Tianna softens, telling her she should enjoy her leave, because once she’s back at Maxmise, he’ll be on business trips and she’ll be pulling all nighters. Even a candlelit dinner will be interrupted by four or five work calls, and it’ll be miserable. Xu Chi asks if she has pictured that scene many times, and with whom.
Ye Xinzhi then offers to introduce Bu Tianna to some people, since she wants to build a network beyond her father. Zhao Heng is surprised he knows people here, and Xu Chi notices he doesn’t seem happy.
Duck Necks and a Defence
Zhao Heng runs into his college roommates, who reminisce at his expense. While they flew direct to a US summer camp, he spent forty hours on connecting flights to save a few hundred dollars. He skipped the seventy-dollar homestay meal plan and lived on giant bags of plain bread from discount stores, then won a bet by braising leftover duck necks and chicken feet from a Mexican restaurant. They joke they only recognised him from the duck necks and suggest he make it his WeChat avatar.
Bu Tianna watches the humiliation from then side. She had enough and she marches over and tells them his avatar will be a photo she picks. Calling him honey, she asks why his college roommates don’t know he braised duck necks in the US because she loves them, and tells him to stay away from them.
She declares that when people mistake women’s kindness for weakness, acting friendly while making sly digs, she’d have exposed them on WeChat Moments long ago. She leads him away, and as the roommates admire her limited-edition bag, she orders Zhao Heng to fix her hair because they’re watching, and to bring out all the tricks he used to chase her. He gently straightens her earring instead.
Zhao Heng thanks her. He has always fought alone out there, and this is the first time anyone has protected him. It feels sweet. Bu Tianna scoffs that he must have been hanging around lousy places to get intimidated so easily, and asks why she would protect him when they’re just colleagues. He points out she’s also a colleague of Chi’s and protects her too. Xu Chi waves them over.

The Plan Takes Shape
Before introducing Mr. Deng to Wen, Ye Xinzhi helps a nervous Xu Chi go over the plan. She’ll take the stage while he works behind the scenes, brokering financing between Wen and Morse, but advising Morse to set extremely harsh wager terms so Wen has to stake everything. Her analysis shows the digital collectibles market is overheated, so when it cools, valuations will crash and Wen will lose the bet.
Xu Chi asks what happens if Wen and Mr. Deng cut them out. Ye Xinzhi says that would break the rules, and they don’t trust each other enough yet. Wen needs money fast, so he needs a third party. Xu Chi also asks if Morse and Mr. Deng could get hurt if Yuanzhou collapses. He assures her they’re facilitating a deal, not fabricating anything, and Morse has its own professional evaluation models.
Xu Chi says she wants Wen to reap what he sowed, but she isn’t a bloodthirsty monster. Ye Xinzhi offers to be the monster, so she can be the beauty and he the beast. She tells him to stop joking, and he points out she isn’t nervous anymore.
When Mr. Deng meets Wen, he says he’ll arrange things properly since Richard recommended it. Ye Xinzhi corrects him: it was Miss Xu. Mr. Deng remembers that Richard is too busy with Tianhe to get involved, so Miss Xu is the matchmaker. Wen thanks Mr. Deng for being willing to mentor her despite her inexperience, and they toast to working together.
Freezing Time
Exhausted afterwards, Xu Chi slips off her heels in the car. He tells her to relax after such a tough day, and she says she’s fine because she has him. When he asks why she’s laughing, she admits a childish wish that time could freeze right now. He says he’ll cast a spell, takes her hand and asks her to close her eyes and feel it with him.
When the magic ends, she complains it was barely a moment, but he says it’s enough. She has already given him more than enough. Xu Chi thanks him for saving her face in front of Bu Tianna, introducing her to so many people and looking out for Zhao Heng. Bu Tianna didn’t say it, but she’s grateful.
Ye Xinzhi says surely a Bu family daughter is at home at events like that. Xu Chi explains that today she wasn’t there as the Bu heiress, just as Bu Tianna. He says what matters most is how Xu Chi found the day. She says it was amazing, like holding a thread and carefully gathering pearls of all shapes that she’ll one day turn into a dazzling necklace.
On a walk outside, Xu Chi admits that if their goal weren’t to take Wen down but to genuinely grow Yuanzhou through financing, it would be really interesting. Sometimes she even thinks that if Wen got lucky, or regulations hadn’t arrived so soon, she’d have helped him. Ye Xinzhi says that since he chose an open play, he can’t change strategy, but he’ll take her on more financing deals later.
She asks whether, by industry rules, they’d get a commission. He says that for a favour deal like this, if it succeeds, at least one percent, enough for her mother’s apartment’s down payment, then reminds her of his careful phrasing: if it succeeds. They’ll both have to work hard.
Xu Chi says she’ll do her best, because it’s her first chance to follow him through a full project, and she has to prove she’s capable of standing behind him. He tells her not behind, but beside him. She reminds him that last time she made the first move, so this time it’s up to him. She waits, but nothing happens, and she heads back.
Later, she messages him that real consultants don’t rest this early and she wants to discuss the Wen plan. She asks if she can come to his place to work overtime. He says of course, adding that he has fine red wine so they can work while drinking. When she questions that, he quickly says he was joking. Nobody’s at his place during the day, there’s a printer and a comfy sofa, and he wants her to work comfortably.
A Staged Tantrum
Ye Xinzhi comes home to find Xu Chi furiously telling someone on the phone that if he thinks she’s easy to push around, it ends here, then hanging up on Wen. She has thrown documents everywhere. She explains that Wen thinks their terms are too harsh, so he changed two figures in their documents and shopped them to smaller investment funds to pressure Morse and them.
When Ye Xinzhi asks why she’s so upset when they expected this, she reveals it was an act. He predicted Wen would hit a wall and come back, so she poured oil on the fire. A steady partner like Ye Xinzhi would never walk away over a small setback, but she’s an impulsive young girl. If she pulls out, Wen loses funding from both sides and panics even more.
Ye Xinzhi says she took a big risk. She says she knows what she’s doing. She checked Wen’s natal chart: he’s a Libra with his Moon in Capricorn, so he hesitates on big decisions, suspicious yet craving control. She even looked up his MBTI. When he asks if she’s relying on horoscopes, she says PDP behavioural testing is much the same, and puts it another way.
Wen is a chameleon who bends with the wind, bold on the surface but timid underneath, so a hard move might work wonders. She greeted Ye Xinzhi loudly on purpose so Wen would hear, and predicts Wen will call him any minute to test the waters.
Right on cue, Wen calls. Xu Chi tells him to hang up, wait two minutes, then call back saying he was calming her down, and give Wen a mild telling off. She begs him to listen to her just this once. He does, and she kisses him on the cheek.
On the call, Ye Xinzhi apologises that Xu Chi was too emotional for him to answer, and gently scolds Wen for moving too hastily. Financing has lead and follow on investors, and they had nearly everything lined up, so why go around them? Wen insists the smaller funds only pestered him because they thought Morse was investing.
Ye Xinzhi says Xu Chi has had a tough time at Maxmise and he brought her in to unwind and to repay Wen’s past support, but perhaps they should both withdraw. Wen begs him not to, calling it a misunderstanding, and offers his true bottom line. Ye Xinzhi promises to try to persuade Chi.
Du Sees It Too
Du drops off Ye Xinzhi’s appointment letter. He has been assigned to teach a Strategic Analysis course, with the first-class next Saturday. Everything is on track, and the Wen plan is three months ahead of schedule. Wen has essentially accepted the terms: Morse takes thirty eight percent of Yuanzhou, Yuanzhou promises at least twenty five percent compound annual growth, and if it falls short, Wen must buy back all the shares at thirteen percent compound annual interest.
Du worries twenty five percent is too low, since the market is hot and Wen might hit it. Ye Xinzhi explains Xu Chi added a clause that Morse accepts normal market swings, but set the lower limit at minus thirty percent. If Yuanzhou falls to seventy percent of its value, Morse takes full ownership.
Wen’s team was so busy arguing over twenty-five versus forty percent that nobody noticed. When Ye Xinzhi picked her up, Wen’s back was soaked in sweat and his lawyers were downing Red Bull. Du realises Xu Chi has been spending time at the apartment and asks if they’re together. Ye Xinzhi confirms they are, and Du calls him an old dog. Ye Xinzhi says they haven’t got that far.
The moment he saw her with another man, he knew he was done for. She has changed him a lot. He thought he had studied Wen long enough to know him inside out, slowly weaving his net, yet Xu Chi used horoscopes and MBTI, things he always dismissed, to read Wen accurately, then staged a blowup without telling him and broke through Wen’s defences.
When Wen accepted her terms, Ye Xinzhi wondered if he had fallen behind and lost the sharp insight he once prided himself on. He isn’t afraid of her growing more capable. He wants her to fly higher, and many of her ideas surpass what he can grasp. She has given him deep respect for the younger generation.
Du tells him he has had it too easy for years and is facing a setback for once. He’s too solitary and struggles to trust anyone. It took the two of them four or five years to open up. Now he has met a girl he can’t control, so of course he’s lost. Deep down, he believes she liked him because she looked up to him, and now that they’re dating and seeing each other plainly, the mystery is fading along with his untouchable aura.
Irreplaceable Episode 13 Recap: My Thoughts
I’m loving all the business scheming amid the romance. At the end of the day, that’s how it all started and what they have in common. She’s flying high on an unstoppable path to success. He isn’t intimidated by her intelligence. In fact, it’s what draws him to her, and he wants her to succeed.
I adored the “crafty old fox” and “Officer Rabbit” banter as they plotted together. But her new way of thinking is making him insecure and wondering if he’s out of touch with what the younger generation is doing in the profession, which also highlights their age gap. I loved the line where he says “not behind, but beside.” Yes!
Interestingly, he hasn’t made a move physically and is actually quite hesitant. Xu Chi is far more forward. She was willing him to kiss her after their walk, and yet nothing. These days, I’m surprised you can call someone your girlfriend before you’ve even initiated a kiss! Her cheeky peck on his cheek when he finally followed her advice and hung up on Wen was so cute.
Du probably articulated it best. Ye Xinzhi feels lost, like he’s facing a setback, because he has relied on himself for so long and struggles to trust and let people in. He feels he’s losing control because she came up with a strategy he didn’t, when he always prided himself on having good insight into people. He was shaken by her cleverness, but not in a bad way. Their relationship once rested on her looking up to him, and now that they’re together, the mystery has faded and his untouchable aura is gone.
Overall, another solid episode. While I was hoping for more of a physical shift in their romance, I’m enjoying watching Ye Xinzhi’s vulnerable side as he learns to navigate his own insecurities. It’s funny how we started the drama with her being insecure and him the stoic, untouchable consultant, and now this young woman has rocked his world in more ways than one. The contrast between his cool, calculating corporate brain and how soft and vulnerable he is with her is such a joy to watch.
