Irreplaceable Episode 15 Recap

**SPOILER ALERT**

TL;DR (Quick Overview)

The Celestial investigation clears Xu Chi and Ma Ke as Director Peng is fired and handed to the police, but Bu Tianna is promoted to Maxmise’s youngest project manager, and Lin Long helps Xu Chi see the promotion was earned. Lin Long puts Shen Jin firmly in his place after humiliating her ex husband at a mall, then Shen ends up on a blind date with Bu Tianna, who explains why Lin Long keeps pushing him away. Xu Chi’s one million yuan Morse bonus finally lands, and when the owner of her mother’s old apartment suddenly demands full payment, Ye Xinzhi offers to lend her the rest.

Caught by Cindy

With Bolo Culture’s final delivery approaching, Cindy sends Lu Le a message. One of her contacts at Bolo saw Lin Long getting into Mr. Shen’s car after work, looking very cosy, and Cindy wants Lu Le to find out what’s going on because she doesn’t want another drama like Celestial.

Lu Le pulls Lin Long aside, and Lin Long brushes it off. She didn’t drive that day, so Mr. Shen gave her a lift, and Cindy loves making things up about her. Lu Le says she has known her for years and her face gave her away. How could she make a rookie mistake like getting tangled up with a client? Has the divorce scrambled her head?

Lin Long says there’s no need to pump the brakes because nothing ever started. Lu Le is relieved, adding that with Lin Long’s situation, a man like Shen is surely just after a taste of something new. Lin Long says she knows. Why would a unicorn startup founder fall for a divorced woman?

So when she sensed he might be slightly interested, she shut it down by asking him straight out whether he had feelings for her, and sure enough, he backed off. When Lu Le asks why she got in his car then, Lin Long says she’s a normal person. Once things were cleared up, she has every right to accept ordinary kindness from a man, and she won’t feel inferior just because she’s divorced.

She admits it’s nice when a man who has it all together wants to look after her. That night, when he insisted on taking her for trendy ice cream, she said yes. In the car, part of her hated herself for having no principles, while the rest of her was glad she still had what it takes to make a man fall for her.

She calls herself indecisive and a hypocrite, but she still doesn’t think she did anything wrong. Lu Le asks if she let him into her place that night. Lin Long remembers inviting him in, but asks if she can skip that question. Lu Le lets it go.

Cleared

After a closed door meeting, Sha Sha leads Xu Chi, Bu Tianna and Zhao Heng into the lift before sharing the outcome. Peng Yuan has been fired and handed over to economic crimes investigators. Ma Ke is off the hook, and his voluntary resignation has been accepted. Yang Rui will stay on with a new team, and the project will fully resume the following week.

The three of them jump and scream with joy. Zhao Heng points out that he did his part too, so Bu Tianna tells him to keep it up by buying milk tea for everyone to celebrate. As Xu Chi starts to order, she spots Ye Xinzhi waiting outside, abandons her drink and runs to him, and he lifts her up in a hug. Watching them, Sha Sha remarks that she has known Richard for a long time, and it looks like he has finally met the one.

Professor Ye

At Huanghe Business School, Ye Xinzhi lectures EMBA students on the risks and opportunities in the digital collectibles market while Xu Chi sits in. He describes digital finance as a blue ocean full of hope and challenges, where opportunity and risk go hand in hand. When a student asks about digital collectibles, he says they’ve expanded the art market with better liquidity and transparency.

But many buyers can’t explain the business logic and treat them as a get rich quick alternative to crypto. With property prices falling and the stock market weak, ordinary people have jumped on the bandwagon, and the hype has pushed risk to an alarming level. Since his students help shape market policy, he assigns a group paper on the operating models and risk prevention of domestic digital collectibles.

Afterwards, students line up to add him on WeChat. Xu Chi teases him, and he scolds her for sipping milk tea in class instead of paying attention, so she offers him a bribe so he won’t fail her. She praises how naturally he slipped in the assignment, since everyone will use Yuanzhou as their case study. He asks if that’s really the most efficient approach, and reveals that the person who just added him on WeChat is from the Internet Finance Association.

Lin Long Keeps Her Distance

In the car park, Shen Jin stops Lin Long, demanding to know why she ignored his 124 calls and blocked him on WeChat. She says she has added him on WeCom so colleagues can reach him more easily, and calls him “sir,” insisting they’re just business partners.

Shen accuses her of using him and tossing him aside, starting to bring up how sweetly she asked him something that night, but Lin Long cuts him off, insisting nothing happened. Bu Tianna and Zhao Heng spot them and ask if everything’s okay. Lin Long tells Shen to contact her on WeCom and leaves.

At a shopping mall, she passes a movie poster and finds herself thinking about all the kind things Shen has done: taking her to hospital after the crash, scolding her for being too thin and rushing back to work, the charm Xu Chi passed on with his wish of a rebirth through hardship, and the night he coaxed her into a movie she said looked boring, asking if she’d give it a shot.

The Ex Husband

Then she runs into Jiang Zhiwen, who is carrying a handbag. He asks how she’s been and why she’s back at work so soon. When she says it’s none of his business and he grabs her arm, insisting he has always wanted to tell her something, she pulls away. His new girlfriend appears and demands to know who she is.

Zhiwen calls Lin Long just a friend he ran into, which only makes his girlfriend angrier, since she knows Lin Long is his ex wife. She accuses Lin Long of throwing herself at her boyfriend. Shen arrives, having followed her. Lin Long holds out her hand for his car keys. She tells the girlfriend she has always found two women fighting over a man pathetic, but to settle this once and for all: the man she’s treating like a prize is someone Lin Long dumped long ago.

Meanwhile, a man chases her around in fancy cars and she still isn’t interested. A divorced man who earns less than her, is bound to be laid off by forty and does nothing but play video games? She’s welcome to him. As Lin Long walks off, Shen adds that the car is actually nothing special, since he has several more at home.

Can’t I Change My Answer?

Shen catches up and tells Lin Long she was a real badass, not insulting her, just like the day she went off at him outside the restroom. She asks if he simply enjoys being kicked around, and he says maybe. Lin Long tells him to open his eyes. She’s just a divorced woman trying to prove she’s still got it: shallow, vain and a coward.

She thanks him for keeping her company when she was lonely, and apologises for using him to keep what little dignity she has left in front of her ex. But he said he felt nothing for her, so why is he clinging to her? Is it because he can’t stand losing, or because a rich man has never been dumped like this? Does he want compensation for emotional damages? Shen asks if he’s really that terrible that she runs every time she sees him, and if she’s really that insecure.

All she did was get divorced and spend time with a man, so how does that make her a coward or shallow? If she were really like that, he wouldn’t have shamelessly chased her this long. He knows she’s avoiding him because he chickened out when she asked if he had feelings for her. He said it was only sympathy, but love isn’t a high stakes exam, so can’t he change his answer if he got it wrong?

He admits he didn’t mean what he said that day, and he regrets it. Lin Long says she’s no longer a young girl who believes in fairy tales. What he feels is admiration and curiosity, maybe mixed with wounded pride and a need to win. If she said yes, he’d be bored within a month, and she’d be hurt and disappointed, maybe falling back into the mess she was when they met.

When she rear ended his car, there wasn’t an ounce of admiration in his eyes. So if he thinks she’s a badass now, she asks him to let her hold onto her fragile pride, because after the divorce, she doesn’t have much left. Shen steps aside and lets her go, and she thanks him.

The Bonus Lands

Ye Xinzhi turns up to drive Xu Chi to work, saying driving his girlfriend matters more than a business trip, though he admits his flight has been delayed. He also has great news. Morse’s bonus has come through: one million yuan. Xu Chi is stunned with excitement as she realises it would be enough to buy into the apartment. If it isn’t enough for the down payment, he offers to chip in.

Xu Chi says it’s more than enough. With her savings and falling property prices, she can definitely afford it. She thanks him, and he tells her not to just say it but show it. She reminds him he’s driving. As she gets out, she asks him to message her when he lands.

Just Colleagues

Yang Rui is back at work and sees Xu Chi get out of Ye Xinzhi’s car. He remarks on the nice car and says no wonder she broke up with him. Xu Chi tells him firmly they broke up because they weren’t compatible, not because of a car.

Yang Rui apologises and thanks her, admitting he wouldn’t have kept his job without her. When he asks if they can still be friends, she says she has repaid the favour from when he helped her at the team building camp. From now on, they’re just colleagues.

Maxmise’s Youngest Project Manager

Zhao Heng turns up at the Celestial meeting, having swapped teams with Yang Rui. Bu Tianna tells him to sit elsewhere, and Xu Chi teases her for keeping her distance when everyone who needs to know already does. Sha Sha announces the Celestial project is back on track and restructures the team.

Zhou Sen, Bu Tianna and Du Qian keep their teams. Even though IT was at the heart of the last mess, Sha Sha wants Xu Chi to lead it this time, with the experienced Li Yue backing her up. Since the project is more than halfway through, Mr. Pi wants a team lead to serve as acting project manager rather than bringing in a new consultant.

Sha Sha asks for nominations. A colleague nominates Bu Tianna, since she has been coordinating and running the whole project since Ma Ke’s suspension, and others second it. Bu Tianna says she finally understands what it means to be the obvious choice. Sha Sha congratulates her on becoming Maxmise’s youngest project manager. Bu Tianna says she hates fluff, then jokes that saying so was fluff too, and launches into her plan.

Lin Long’s Advice

Over coffee, Lin Long asks Xu Chi if she’s jealous. Xu Chi admits she wasn’t ready for it. When they were both promoted to SBA around the same time, she was fine, but Bu Tianna has now shot past her. Lin Long says she understands, joking that she felt the same when Xu Chi took Bolo from her.

This happens all the time at work, like Lu Le and her, friends and rivals at once, and Xu Chi will get used to it. Xu Chi says she isn’t afraid of competing, since they went head-to-head on the Celestial draft. It’s just that Bu Tianna told her nothing, and she didn’t even know Bu Tianna had taken over the whole project while she was suspended.

Lin Long points out that Xu Chi didn’t tell Bu Tianna about helping Morse close a deal during her suspension either. There’s no absolute fairness at work, and while you’re grinding, others aren’t sitting still. When everyone thought Celestial was finished, Bu Tianna was the only one who refused to give up.

She fought Mr. Pi to keep it alive, coordinated colleagues through the investigation and kept the work moving. Without her, would Celestial have restarted the second they saw Xu Chi’s evidence? Xu Chi realises she has no right to be jealous and thanks her for setting her straight. Lin Long calls it payback for being such a lousy mentor who never really guided her.

Now she thinks Xu Chi actually seems grounded, like a girl not long out of school, not some prodigy from a book or TV show. When Lin Long checks her phone, Xu Chi notices she still has Mr. Shen’s amulet hanging from it. Lin Long says she has no idea if it works. She uses it as a phone charm and has just got used to it.

Two Hours Together

Determined to keep up, Xu Chi pulls all-nighters. On a rare two-hour dinner date, she zones out thinking about a Celestial call. Ye Xinzhi tells her to stop pushing so hard. He has been on two business trips this week, they finally have two hours together, and she’s still working and getting dark circles.

When she panics about where, he admits he’s kidding. As her mentor, he could only tell her to take it easy, but as her boyfriend, he’s seriously telling her not to treat herself like a machine. Consulting is a marathon, and all-nighters will burn her out. She says they both like seeing each other strive to be better, and he gives in.

She admits she doesn’t want to be outdone by Bu Tianna. He tells her not to forget why she got into this industry or let small issues bog her down. Xu Chi says she hasn’t forgotten. She wants to be a top consultant like him, make partner, have her own office and buy back her mother’s apartment.

The word reminds her she told the agent that morning she had the money ready. The agent’s update is good: prices dropped again, the previous buyer backed out, and the owner agreed to sell to her at the same price. But when she calls Zhu, the agent, the owner has suddenly changed his mind.

Inside the Apartment

They rush to meet Zhu at 11pm. The owner now insists on full payment. He was annoyed by the hassle of cancelling the previous sale and getting the tax refund, and doesn’t want to wait months for her mortgage approval. Xu Chi insists banks approve loans fast now and she knows people there, and begs Zhu to put her in touch with the owner. Zhu says it’s too late tonight and the owner is only available during the day, adding that the commission is the same either way, so why would he lie?

Ye Xinzhi asks if Zhu can at least show them inside, since the owner never let them view it. Inside, Ye Xinzhi asks which room was hers as a child. Xu Chi isn’t sure. It was her grandmother’s apartment, and she only stayed during holidays with her mother. It looks nothing like she remembers.

All she knows is that her mother sold it for eighty thousand yuan to fund her father’s business, then he took a mistress and they divorced. When her mother saw on the news how prices here had skyrocketed, she was full of regret. Before she died, she said many times that she wanted to go back to before she met Xu Chi’s father, back to Beijing and this apartment.

Xu Chi was too young to do anything. Ye Xinzhi asks if this is her mother’s wish or hers. Xu Chi asks if there’s a difference. Whenever she’s sad, she comes to look at the little building and the window full of flowers, and it takes her back to when she was happiest. Ye Xinzhi says then they should buy it.

When she says she doesn’t have the money, he says she has him. She refuses to use his money, but he says sometimes opportunity matters more than money. She has already missed out once and can’t miss it again. If it bothers her, they can sign a loan agreement. He asks her to give him a chance to do what a boyfriend should. Overwhelmed, she agrees and holds him tight.

Grinding to Get Ahead

In the lobby, Zhao Heng greets the two women. Xu Chi gives Bu Tianna a quick update. She can’t make the morning meeting because she’s checking the database with Mr. Sun at 8:40, then going on a business trip with him the next day to Celestial’s data centres in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu and Suzhou for on site training, and won’t be back until the weekend.

Zhao Heng asks if her body can handle it. Bu Tianna tells Xu Chi she doesn’t need daily reports, just a summary when she’s back. When Xu Chi leaves, Bu Tianna tells Zhao Heng not to hold her back, since she’s grinding to pull ahead. Zhao Heng says even if Xu Chi aces IT, she can’t top a project manager.

Bu Tianna asks if he really thinks a hand me down title matters. They’re both aiming for partner. What counts is Mr. Pi and Sha Sha’s overall evaluation once the project wraps, because that decides how far she can go at Maxmise. Zhao Heng suggests he grind with her at her place, and she tells him he wishes.

A Blind Date With Mr. Shen

Bu Tianna’s mother calls to set her up on a blind date. Bu Tianna refuses, reminding her they promised never to do this, until her father gets on the line and she reluctantly agrees. At the restaurant, her mother explains Ms. Xue’s son works in tech and is doing well. Her father has got into some new business model and wants her to vet him, so it isn’t a blind date, just making a new friend.

Bu Tianna asks if he can fix her laptop. Ms. Xue and her son walk in and unbelievably, the son turns out to be Shen Jin, and Bu Tianna tells the mothers she knows him as a client, so they head outside to talk. Bu Tianna teases him for chasing Lin Long in the car park one day and going on a blind date the next, calling his time management impressive.

He suggests they cut each other some slack as fellow sufferers, and asks if she isn’t out on a blind date behind her boyfriend’s back. She insists she doesn’t have a boyfriend, and says no wonder Lin doesn’t like him. Shen admits she’s right. Lin really doesn’t like him. He then asks how Lin Long has been.

When Bu Tianna asks why she’d be nice enough to tell him, he offers a deal: tell him, and he’ll keep her mother off her back for a whole year. She agrees, then says Lin Long is fine, everything’s normal. He complains that isn’t worth a year. Bu Tianna asks what he expects. Lin Long got divorced, ended up in hospital and came back to work as if nothing happened.

He’s the one chasing her, not the other way round. Shen admits he doesn’t even know what he wants to know, or what Lin Long really wants. He told her to stop selling herself short, yet she still told him to stay away, saying she wants to keep her dignity and pride. Bu Tianna laughs at how clueless he is.

If Lin Long wants to keep her dignity and pride, he must have done something that made her feel she’d lost them. It’s like dragging someone who’s afraid of heights onto a rooftop and telling them not to be scared. Shen finally understands. She tells him to go and explain himself, but he says he won’t go into battle unprepared, and points out that if she were so good at love, she wouldn’t be on a blind date tonight.

She says she wasted her breath, and he insists it wasn’t wasted. He tells her to come closer and take his arm, then counts to three so they can turn, smile and nod at their watching mothers through the window. Delighted, the mothers tell them to keep chatting. Bu Tianna complains that linking arms on a first blind date is a bit much, and Shen asks if she’d like to try something worse. She declines.

Irreplaceable Episode 15 Recap: My Thoughts

Yes! Another workplace issue fixed, and the project is back on track. Jobs are saved and the project is saved, but there’s still serious hard work ahead as Bu Tianna and Xu Chi keep competing after Bu Tianna’s promotion. I appreciated Xu Chi’s firm, professional boundary with Yang Rui too. He apologised, but she made it clear they’re colleagues and nothing more, and after what he did, that’s fair.

I loved that the writers avoided the typical jealous best friendโ€™s trope. Xu Chi wasn’t bitter about Bu Tianna’s success. Her hurt came from feeling left out of the loop, and the scene where Lin Long helps her work through it was so grounded and realistic. Lin Long has come such a long way from the mentor who tried to sabotage her.

A lot of screen time went to Lin Long and Shen, and I’m really liking that the drama is spending time on a more mature couple, and on what it’s like for a divorced woman to date again and the supposed stigma that comes with it, even though in this case the stigma is in her own head, not his.

Bu Tianna hit the nail on the head when she gave Shen a reality check about dignity. Lin Long has trust issues, jumping into a relationship after divorce is hard, and she simply isn’t ready yet, while Shen might be coming on too strong for her.

As for our leads, there were some nice scenes, especially Xu Chi’s bonus finally landing and Ye Xinzhi offering to help her buy back her mother’s apartment, which felt like a genuine triumph after all her grinding. He is showing deep affection and commitment to their relationship by trying to help her buy the apartment that is so important to her. Her accepting the offer is a major milestone for them as a couple.
