TL;DR (Quick Overview)
Feeling threatened, Lin Long sets Xu Chi up to drink at a client dinner despite her alcohol allergy, and the night ends in chaos when Lin Long’s husband storms in. Ye Xinzhi helps Xu Chi see that her mentor fears being replaced. At the Bolo Culture pitch, Xu Chi rescues a failing proposal with a bold plan, and Lin Long’s attempt to steal the credit and get her fired backfires when Sha Sha already has Xu Chi’s version with both their names on it. After a car crash and some blunt truths from client Shen Jin, Lin Long steps back and hands Bolo Culture to Xu Chi, who celebrates over drinks with Ye Xinzhi and a fresh round of his career advice.
A Thoughtful Return Package
Ye Xinzhi wraps up a work call in his hotel room when a package arrives from Xu Chi with a note apologising again and thanking him. Inside are two things he once gave her: the handkerchief he offered to dry her tears after that first interview, and the sunglasses he lent her to hide her eyes during her internship.
She has also tucked in a bottle of the expensive water he likes, something she clocked after noticing the empty bottle he had tossed in the bin.
Xu Chi Turns a Demotion into an Opportunity
Back at the hotel venue, Lin Long is surprised to find Xu Chi still working, since she had told the Research team to send her home to rest. Xu Chi shrugs that she would only be sitting around at home, so she might as well be useful.
She casually mentions that she just ran into Mr. Pi and told him she had volunteered to help the Conference Team, because getting to network with industry heavyweights was well worth it. Lin Long, quietly relieved, tells her Mr. Pi is giving a speech at the summit the next afternoon and offers to bring Xu Chi along to meet some people in the industry.
Missing the Main Event
At the summit, Mr. Pi speaks about homegrown innovative companies needing to juggle short term survival with long term strategy, getting back to the roots of innovation and value creation, and standing out globally. He adds that multinationals must rethink their goals for the China market and find ways to turn China’s unique strengths, such as product pipelines, business models, R&D and talent, into global value.
When he finishes, the host invites C&C Consulting partner Ye Xinzhi to the stage. Xu Chi, however, has already followed Lin Long out of the hall to network and misses his talk entirely.
Lin Long introduces Xu Chi around and tells her that new quality productive forces are the hot topic of the moment, so the whole team will be focusing on it and Xu Chi should connect with leaders in that space whenever she can.
She then spots Mr. Yan, president of the Yunshang Internet Association, and gently scolds him for ignoring her messages about the Suhu AI industry cluster. After introducing Xu Chi as her new colleague, Lin Long lets slip some inside information. The Wanghu Pavilion restaurant upstairs has just received some top quality hairtail fish. Mr. Yan is instantly keen, and the three head upstairs.
Dinner With a Side of Sabotage
Lin Long flatters Mr. Yan for securing a private room on a day when the summit has every room booked. When he steps away to take a call, she quickly briefs Xu Chi. Mr. Yan loves flattery and can’t stand awkward silences. Xu Chi takes the hint and asks how strict upcoming policies on AI misuse will be.
Mr. Yan says very strict, and compares it to a child getting spanked for not listening to their dad. Lin Long laughs so hard she claims her belly hurts, and Mr. Yan jokes that she shouldn’t harm the baby. He offers to drink as an apology and demands the restaurant’s best wine, because good fish deserves good wine. When he proposes a toast, Lin Long reminds him she can’t drink because she’s pregnant, but assures him they have Xu as backup today.
Xu Chi reminds Lin Long that she told her she is allergic to alcohol. Lin Long simply points out that she can’t be the one drinking while pregnant and tells Xu Chi to take it slow and build up her tolerance. Mr. Yan chimes in that everything is awkward the first time and easy the second. Despite Xu Chi’s protests, the two of them push glass after glass on her.
Running Into Ye Xinzhi
Ye Xinzhi is asking hotel staff for directions to the Chinese restaurant when he comes across Xu Chi looking unwell. He asks whether she drank willingly or was pressured, and warns her to watch her back. She dryly asks if he thinks she was just propositioned, then tells him the truth. Someone is out to get her.
She explains that her superior set her up and she was forced to drink far too much, pinching herself the whole time while looking for a way out. When Lin Long went to the restroom and left her phone on the table, her husband kept calling, so Xu Chi answered in case it was urgent. Next thing she knew, Lin Long’s husband stormed in furious and threw wine in Mr. Yan’s face, which put an end to the dinner.
Ye Xinzhi asks whether she expects praise or a telling off, pointing out that Lin Long is pregnant. Xu Chi asks if being pregnant means she has to just take it. If someone treats her with respect, she returns it tenfold, but if they cross her, she won’t roll over. He observes she has a strong instinct for both defence and attack, and that her time at Maxmise clearly isn’t easy.
Xu Chi vents. She has been more than fair to Lin Long, done everything asked and put up with everything. She is the best and hardest working of all the new hires. What more does Lin Long want? She’s a woman too, so how could she pull something so low?
Ye Xinzhi tells her Lin Long feels threatened and is afraid of being replaced. Xu Chi can’t believe it, since Lin Long is her mentor and she is only an intern analyst. He explains that insecure people often miss out on opportunities at work, and adult lions commonly kill off a threatening young lion early.
He jokes that one bottle of water just bought her twenty minutes of career advice, which is a pretty good deal, then offers to walk her down and call her a cab. Xu Chi admits she wasn’t in the bathroom because of a stomach ache. She was making herself throw up to limit the damage from the alcohol. He tells her to be careful and look after herself.

Why He Left P&J
As he turns to leave, Xu Chi asks why he left P&J. When she went back to return his sunglasses, she discovered he was already gone, and she had really wanted to thank him in person for his advice. Ye Xinzhi brushes it off as something he said in passing and congratulates her on making it into Maxmise as she wanted.
He explains that consultants sometimes take a gap at a corporate company to stay connected to the market, and when they met, he happened to be on one of those stints at P&J. He then reminds her that C&C Consulting and Maxmise are competitors, and with the hotel full of summit attendees, people could get the wrong idea. He tells her to head back and wishes her luck.
That night, Xu Chi drifts back to a childhood memory of a “Xu Chi loves Mom” drawing, happy days at her grandmother’s Beijing apartment, and her younger self begging her mother for tanghulu at No. 92 Yong’an Road.
Trouble at Home and at Work
At Lin Long’s home, her husband demands to know why she is so late and looking so worn out. She is upset that he threw wine in a client’s face, while he is furious that she was drinking while pregnant. She insists she wasn’t drinking and it was just normal business talk, but he says it was anything but normal, and the argument spills over.
At the office the next morning, Sha Sha tells Lin Long that Mr. Pi wants an update on Bolo Culture, and Lin Long assures her the meeting is set for that afternoon. Lin Long then confronts Xu Chi for answering her phone. Xu Chi apologises but points out that Lin Long was the one who told her to drink with Mr. Yan, and she had no idea her husband had such a temper.
Lin Long hisses at her to lower her voice and warns her to know what she should and shouldn’t be doing. Remembering Ye Xinzhi’s words about adult lions, Xu Chi coolly replies that what she should be doing is finishing the Yuanming proposal for her.
Lin Long later vents to Lu Le that Xu Chi is awful and she completely misjudged her. Lu Le reassures her that her performance has ranked first for years, and newbies trying to stand out come and go. Just don’t let her shine on any projects and she’ll leave on her own soon enough.
Ordered to Stay Silent
On the way to Bolo Culture, Lin Long orders Xu Chi not to say a single word without her permission. In the pitch, Lin Long outlines Maxmise’s plan for improving organisational efficiency after Bolo’s acquisition of Qingyi Literature. It centres on integrating copyright content and design and setting up a dedicated efficiency team, the EET, which would drive cost reduction through data and connect a steering committee at the top with five functional areas below, from process optimisation and data analysis to HR, finance and IT integration.
Xu Chi notices the clients have checked out and breaks her silence to ask CEO Shen Jin whether something isn’t sitting right with him. He admits it isn’t. Lin Long is livid at the interruption. He asks Lin Long to tell him straight what Bolo actually needs to do to get Qingyi’s veteran staff to integrate, fall in line and stay motivated, and to give him something useful. She starts explaining Qingyi’s chaotic internal management and overly flat structure but falters and looks unwell, so Shen suggests a coffee break.
What the Clients Really Think
Downstairs, Shen’s team grumbles that a few PowerPoint slides and some plans shouldn’t cost them eight figures, and that consulting firms still think they’re easy money. Shen pushes back. He points out that a third of Fortune 500 board chairs have consulting backgrounds. Plenty of traditional firms are all talk, but he values Maxmise’s global standing, management expertise, operating models and databases built across dozens of countries over decades.
If they want to take their IP global, who else can they rely on? His own team can’t go market by market from Rio to Osaka, because by the time they finish it would be too late. When they argue the proposal still wasn’t good enough, he says they can always choose another firm and treat this project as a way to test the waters.
Meanwhile, Lin Long demands to know why Xu Chi spoke without permission. Xu Chi explains the clients were zoning out, and asking a question to win back their attention is a proposal technique Lin Long taught her herself. Lin Long warns her for the very last time to stay in her lane if she wants a smooth internship. When Shen returns, he kindly suggests Lin Long take time off if she’s unwell, since no job matters more than her baby.
Cash on the Table
To Lin Long’s horror, Xu Chi places a stack of cash in front of Shen. She reminds him he asked how to get Qingyi’s staff to listen, work hard and integrate. Her answer is to use money to bring in a fresh team. Qingyi has been around for more than twenty years, its average employee is about forty-five, and its people are used to running things like a family workshop.
Expecting them to quickly blend into Bolo, a company that is only five years old, is about as likely as her suddenly becoming a top web novelist pulling in fifty thousand a month. Since Bolo isn’t short of money and really only wants Qingyi’s IP, why not start fresh?
She suggests keeping Qingyi’s senior executives for now and letting everyone else go with the best severance package on the market, double their entitlement plus ten. Regular staff could retire comfortably, the mess would be cleared quickly, and Bolo’s reputation would get a boost.
Three birds with one stone. She adds that she has always seen Bolo’s lean, boutique HR structure as one of its greatest strengths, so the follow up reforms should be built around it. Shen wants to hear more. Lin Long tries to save the rest for later, but Shen says he doesn’t like suspense.
Xu Chi explains that Bolo’s incentive system is solid, but it runs three pay models at once, based on position, skill and performance, which makes it too mixed. She goes on with her recommendations. As the meeting wraps up, Shen tells Miss Xu her proposal was excellent. Xu Chi graciously credits Maxmise’s commitment to quality, and Shen thanks Lin Long too, telling her she has a great team.
A Dream Too Big for the Car
Outside, Lin Long sarcastically asks if Xu Chi is happy now that she has had her fill of the spotlight. Xu Chi says she helped save a project that was about to collapse, so as part of the team, of course she’s happy. Lin Long accuses her of joining Maxmise just to replace her. Xu Chi tells her she’s overthinking it.
She is just an intern, and she would never set her sights on replacing a consultant two levels above her. Her goal isn’t to replace Lin Long at all. It’s to become someone in this city who can never be replaced. Lin Long tells her to make her own way back, because her car can’t fit a dream that big.
Lin Long Tries to Take the Credit
Back at the office, Lin Long presents the revised proposal to Sha Sha, claiming the young Bolo management team was tough to handle but luckily she adapted the plan on the spot and won preliminary approval. Then she claims Xu Chi did something outrageous by secretly pulling out cash to bribe Bolo’s CEO. It violates business ethics and is a huge red flag at Maxmise, so Lin Long says she can no longer mentor her and suggests ending her probation early so she can find a job elsewhere.
Sha Sha calmly says it’s a nice proposal, but Xu Chi sent her one twenty minutes earlier with the exact same thinking, and it lists both Lin Long and Xu Chi as producers. Lin Long scrambles to explain, but Sha Sha asks if that’s really necessary. She reminds Lin Long that she has always looked out for her.
When Lin Long felt Cindy stole the Sato Pharmaceuticals deal, Sha Sha handed her Bolo Culture. When Lin Long got pregnant and low on energy, Sha Sha found her an assistant, and she chose Xu Chi herself, the most capable of the new hires. Whatever went wrong between them, Xu Chi showed better teamwork than Lin Long did.
Lin Long protests that Xu Chi always acts alone and goes over her head without approval. Sha Sha tells her performance is all that counts. She can’t expect every subordinate to be less capable than her, and managing them well comes down to her leadership. The net Lin Long wove was too loose, so Xu Chi slipped through and rose.
When Lin Long asks if this is all her fault, Sha Sha says she isn’t in a good state and suggests she start her leave immediately. Furious, Lin Long dumps a pile of work on Xu Chi’s desk, telling her that since she loves taking on work, it’s all hers now. Bu Tianna quietly offers her congratulations.
A Crash and an Unexpected Rescue
Driving home with everyone’s words replaying in her head, Lin Long rear ends another car. She apologises, takes full blame and offers to process a quick insurance claim, then realises the other driver is Shen. He sees she’s bleeding and pregnant, scolds her for driving so carelessly, and insists on taking responsibility and driving her to hospital.
The doctor says the cut is shallow, needs no stitches and is hidden in her hair, and the baby is fine. But her heart rate is too fast, worse than last time, and she has already been told to rest. When the doctor tells Shen that as the father he should come to more checkups, both of them hurriedly explain he’s just her client.
On the drive home, Lin Long apologises and thanks him. Shen tells her not to read into it. He just couldn’t bear the responsibility if something happened to her. He guesses she’s four or five months along and mentions his sister was already on bed rest at that stage, while Lin Long is standing for hours giving presentations and driving like she’s in Fast & Furious.
He asks if wearing herself out for her company is really worth it. When she launches into a corporate line about how much Maxmise values the project, he cuts her off. It’s just the two of them, so there’s no need for flattery. He tips her off that Maxmise has a good shot at the deal, and suggests she go home, rest, and leave the follow up to Miss Xu.
Lin Long objects that Xu Chi is inexperienced and new. Shen asks if she thinks she’s so experienced herself. Her proposal was full of clichรฉs, a recycled template meant to fleece them, while Xu Chi’s was far more interesting.
Lin Long snaps at him to stop, then apologises, admitting she has been emotionally unstable. Shen says he understands her hormones are all over the place, but he gives her some advice. Don’t let this cost her clients, then her boss, then her husband, or she’ll be left with nothing. Game over.
Lin Long Steps Back
At the office, colleagues are betting on whether Xu Chi can keep up her streak, telling Sha Sha she has been first in the office for twenty-seven days straight. At home, Lin Long excitedly calls her husband, Zhiwen, over to feel the baby kick.
The next day, Lin Long apologises to Sha Sha for her attitude, unsure whether it’s the pregnancy. Sha Sha tells her she has been through all of it herself. Women make up less than a third of Maxmise’s staff, so helping Lin Long is helping herself.
Lin Long says she’ll focus on the Yuanming project and let Xu Chi take over Bolo Culture while she oversees from behind. Sha Sha calls it the smart choice, says nothing matters more than her health, and promises Lin Long’s position and responsibilities will be waiting for her when she returns.
Drinks and Life Lessons With Ye Xinzhi
Xu Chi is grinning to herself at a bar when Ye Xinzhi runs into her. He tells her to call him Richard, or Ye Xinzhi if she follows her company’s no English names approach, but to drop the “Mr.” since four out of ten people in the CBD would turn around.
He orders a beer and teases her about leaving work early looking so thrilled, asking if she pulled off a coup. She tells him she finally gets to lead a project on her own. He asks if she got a promotion, a raise or an early end to probation, then tells her to wipe the smug look off her face.
Plenty of people from nearby offices eat here, the consulting world is small, and if someone snapped her looking like she just got revenge, it could end up online. Xu Chi complains that last time he told her to watch her back and now he’s lecturing her, and his preachy attitude is a real turn off. He says he heard her and isn’t changing a thing.
She notices he seems happy too, and he reveals he has just closed the Tianhe Air brand transformation project, asking if she’s jealous. When she wonders aloud when she’ll ever reach his level, he quips that it’ll be when she has smile lines and eye bags no cosmetic procedure can fix. When she stares, he insists he ages well.
Xu Chi congratulates him and thanks him properly for his guidance, raising her glass and calling him sir. He begs her not to call him that or toast him so formally, and they clink glasses. He then offers more advice. Knowing how to dine with clients and choose a restaurant is a skill. French food takes too long, Chinese food comes with too many dietary restrictions, and she’ll be sick of Italian once room service spaghetti bolognese becomes her staple on business trips.
She should avoid Japanese restaurants because the culture traditionally puts men before women, and the setting shapes how much a client trusts and respects her. His pick is coffee shops. They’re fast, efficient and standardised. Talk business, then leave, with no drinking and no flirting.
He also tells her never to pour coffee or tea for anyone at the office, because she isn’t a waitress. Xu Chi finishes his sentence: she’s a consultant. Ye Xinzhi corrects her that right now she’s only an intern analyst, with senior analysts and associate consultants above her, and it will take at least two years to make consultant. When she says that’s exactly why she came, he wishes her luck, given Maxmise’s brutal elimination rate.
Xu Chi points out that he has something to say about everything. One moment he’s putting her down and the next he’s encouraging her, and one moment he’s letting her pour him a drink and the next he’s telling her to keep her dignity. He says that’s because he was her interviewer.
So she asks him, as her interviewer, to teach her how to land a deal like Tianhe. He calls it a good question, but their firms are competitors and it’s confidential. When she asks why he’d teach her about restaurants then, he says that’s just common sense most people don’t need to be taught.
Someone calls him away as Richard, and before he goes, Ye Xinzhi wishes her continued success and hopes she buys back her mother’s old apartment soon, so she gets what she came for.

Irreplaceable Episode 2 Recap: My Thoughts
Lin Long is spiralling out of control. She feels threatened by Xu Chi and is now resorting to underhanded tactics to get her out of the way. Getting her to drink with a client, woman to woman, is disgusting. Thankfully, Xu Chi’s run in with Ye Xinzhi straight afterwards was timely. More mentoring happens here, which she clearly values, and it’s lovely to see how easily he picks up on what’s really going on with her.
But Lin Long keeps getting caught out, and work isn’t going well for her either way. Xu Chi outshining her at the Bolo Culture presentation certainly didn’t help! Now paranoia is setting in, and even her superior is exasperated with her. As frustrating as her defensive behaviour is, the show makes her anxieties feel very human. Her fear of maternity leave and the office’s culture of replacement are real pressures, and the friction between her and the driven, proactive Xu Chi captures corporate stress so well.
Bu Tianna is easily my favourite side character so far. I love the hardworking “nepo baby” archetype!
There were some interesting scenes between Mr. Shen and Lin Long, and I’m going to take a punt that something may happen between them in the future. He seems like a caring man who is genuinely worried about her health, which should of course take precedence over work. We also get a glimpse into her personal life, which doesn’t look good.
The bar scene at the end was a rapid-fire round of advice from Ye Xinzhi with a side of cheekiness, and it was fun watching Xu Chi take it all on board with a vengeance. The easy chemistry between them is a real highlight.
Despite the massive gap in their corporate ranks, he treats her with genuine respect and offers solid, practical advice without ever looking down on her. And it’s not just me, right? She’s totally flustered by him in that scene! I do think she mostly sees him as a mentor first and foremost, but she definitely seems aware that he’s handsome and appealing as a man too.
A good second episode. I’m loving that the show focuses on real work projects, office strategy and character competence rather than rushing into heavy romance, and Xu Chi’s determination to become irreplaceable keeps everything moving at a fast, engaging pace. We’re getting to know the characters better, and the plots are shaping up nicely.
