Irreplaceable Episode 7 Recap

**SPOILER ALERT**

TL;DR (Quick Overview)

Xu Chi decides to pour herself into her career and moves to the Celestial Insurance digital finance team, while helping Lin Long stand up to her husband and outsmart him in the divorce. She gets sweet revenge on Ye Xinzhi by teasing him about looking old, but is blindsided when Bu Tianna joins her new team using plans Xu Chi had confided in her. Ye Xinzhi tracks her down, shakes her out of her spiral with a terrifying high-speed drive, and helps her face her fear of losing. When she asks if he likes her, he says yes, but not romantically, and offers to be the angel he never had.

A Shoulder in the Office

Bu Tianna’s teasing about what Ye Xinzhi might want from her brings Xu Chi to tears. Stunned, Bu Tianna quickly turns her around so nobody can see, shields her and gives her ten more seconds to pull herself together.

Once Xu Chi says she’s fine, Bu Tianna groans that people will think she’s bullying her. Xu Chi admits she never cries in front of anyone, yet somehow with Bu Tianna she does. Bu Tianna hands her some makeup to touch up, then takes over when Xu Chi gets it wrong, showing her that you pat it on.

Bu Tianna says she used to be wary of Ye Xinzhi, but judging by Xu Chi’s face, it seems things have been cleared up. A single man with his history and a simple girl like her are on different paths, so it’s better to draw the line early. When she asks if Xu Chi likes him that much, Xu Chi insists she doesn’t.

She just had a little crush and saved one photo. Was that really so bad that she needed to be warned off? Bu Tianna tells her it’s a passing infatuation. In less than two months the spell will break, and she’ll look back and think she was silly. Xu Chi says she figured it out while crying. What matters most right now is her career, and with a career she can have any man she wants.

Once Bolo Culture is done, she’ll ask Sha Sha to let her pursue digital finance clients. Bu Tianna notes that Ye Xinzhi told her the same thing, and Xu Chi explains his view that to last in consulting, you have to choose industries with big budgets and strong growth.

A Charm for Lin Long

Xu Chi is browsing apartment prices when Shen Jin catches her and offers to put in a word at his bank, where he’s a big client, to get her the best mortgage rate. She politely declines. He then asks a favour. He had a minor crash with Lin Long and took full responsibility, but because his car insurance is from out of town, he needs her signature.

Xu Chi agrees to handle it. Having heard Lin Long is going through a rough time, Shen hands Xu Chi a charm from Baiyun Temple, one of several he picked up for everyone at his company. Lin Long started this project, after all, and he wishes her a rebirth through hardship and better days ahead. Xu Chi jokingly asks where her charm is, since she started the project too. Shen asks if she doesn’t already have her senior.

Lipstick and a Clean Slate

At the postpartum care centre, Lin Long is moved that a client she has known only a short time sends good wishes, while her own husband has nothing but cruelty for her. She explains that Jiang Zhiwen worked out she wants a divorce when she went straight to the care centre instead of home and changed her bank card PIN. Now he has relatives and friends messaging her to come to her senses.

Instead of a fruit basket, Xu Chi brings Lin Long the newest shade of lipstick to brighten her complexion, so that whether she ends up at the Civil Affairs Bureau or in court, she won’t look like she’s losing. Touched, Lin Long calls her thoughtful and wonders what was wrong with her back then to push Xu Chi away. Xu Chi admits she was a bit too aggressive herself.

Jiang Zhiwen Barges In

Staff try to stop a man from entering, but Jiang Zhiwen insists he’s her husband. Lin Long tells them to let him in. He demands to know how long she’ll keep acting crazy and grabs her, ordering her home. She wrenches free and tells him he can refuse a divorce if he likes, but she has consulted a lawyer.

His shove caused her miscarriage, which counts as bodily injury and carries criminal liability. If she presses charges, his career will be ruined, and if he remarries and has children, their background checks for school and work will always be an issue. Xu Chi adds that she has video of him hitting Lin Long. Zhiwen realises they’ve set him up.

Lin Long tells him calmly that they should divorce and keep some dignity. Zhiwen agrees, but demands that she take the cash while he keeps the apartment, and that a soon to mature fund be split equally. Lin Long orders him out, and he leaves calling her a crazy woman.

An Insurance Loophole

Lin Long points out that she paid two thirds of the apartment’s down payment and more of the mortgage than he did, so why should he get it? She’ll file for divorce the moment she’s discharged. Her lawyer suggested using the maturing trust to buy jewellery or designer bags, which count as personal items and won’t be divided.

Xu Chi wonders whether a court would really accept millions spent on jewellery all at once. Lin Long admits it’s risky but she has no better option. Xu Chi brings up Fushun Insurance Group, which handles the company’s medical insurance. She has been studying digital finance in insurance and asked them for materials, including a marketing case study.

By law, a policy’s cash value is marital property, but the contract itself belongs to the policyholder. She suggests Lin Long ask a Fushun broker for a short to medium term policy with a very low cash value in the first two years, say ten percent of the coverage.

After the divorce, she would only owe Zhiwen five percent, but when the policy matures she’d receive the full payout plus decent returns. Lin Long loves it and plans to run it past her lawyer. When she thanks her, Xu Chi says to think of it as an apology for causing that fight at Wanghu Pavilion.

Lin Long tells her not to bring it up, since what she did was awful. She personally hates men making unwanted advances at work, yet she still… Xu Chi stops her. They agreed to wipe the slate clean.

A New Team

Xu Chi stays late researching fintech until Sha Sha finds her. When Xu Chi asks for advanced access to the company’s digital finance database, Sha Sha jokes that her workload clearly isn’t heavy enough and reminds her Maxmise isn’t a training centre.

Xu Chi points out that new hires learn fastest in their first year, and since Sha Sha gave her a chance with Bolo, she could create even more value in future. Doesn’t Sha Sha love ambitious subordinates? Sha Sha offers her something better. Ma Ke has finished his strategic hypothesis for Celestial Insurance’s digital transformation and is moving into strategy testing, so Xu Chi could transfer to his team soon.

The catch is that her Bolo bonus only runs through this week. Xu Chi jumps at it, though she worries how it looks to leave mid project. Sha Sha says one person fewer won’t slow Bolo down, and since Ye Xinzhi described Xu Chi as an explorer type, she’s willing to let her try.

When Xu Chi asks if it’s only because of him, Sha Sha says of course not. She’s smart, capable and hardworking, and Lin Long told her about the insurance advice, which shows real talent. Sha Sha sends her home to rest, warning that her health is hers alone, because if she falls, she’ll be replaced immediately.

Warmth Within Arm’s Reach

Xu Chi finds Lin Long a rental just three subway stops from the office and offers to handle the paperwork since she is still recovering. Lin Long asks how she has time with Bolo, and Xu Chi explains she has moved to Ma Ke’s Celestial Insurance project. She wasn’t pushed out.

She asked to move because she wants to try digital finance, and came to tell Lin Long herself since Lin Long took her to the first Bolo pitch. Lin Long laughs that they fought tooth and nail over that project and now neither is on it. She warns Xu Chi that Ma Ke can be tricky, so she should keep her guard up.

Xu Chi gently asks what Lin Long ever saw in Jiang Zhiwen. Lin Long says she was much like Xu Chi when she first joined Maxmise: busy, exhausted and lonely every day. It was easy to reach for whatever warmth was within arm’s reach. The words stay with Xu Chi, who thinks back to Ye Xinzhi telling her not to drink recklessly because he was there.

Payback, Served Warm

Xu Chi hands Ye Xinzhi her highlighted notes on Benyuan Digital Collectibles. He asks how she’s settling into her new team. She says Ma Ke is nice and already letting her design solutions, while Yang Rui is teaching her diagnostic techniques, which is far more engaging than interviews and models.

Ye Xinzhi asks who Yang Rui is, since he thought Bu Tianna was her only friend at Maxmise. Xu Chi breezily says she hangs out with colleagues all the time and flicks through photos to show him Yang Rui, a consultant who has helped her a lot. Then she casually lands on the photo of the two of them dancing, says she thinks Shen Jin sent it, and laughs at his face in it.

He moves on to teaching her the bottom up BPR method. When he catches her staring, she tells him he looks worn out lately, with bad dark circles and deep lines around his eyes. He admits he’s been staying up late.

She offers to buy him a thermos so he can steep goji berries and cassia seeds instead of drinking coffee, because he has to take care of himself as he gets older. She’ll get the biggest one. He thanks her.

On the phone afterwards, Xu Chi tells Bu Tianna she won that round. Ye Xinzhi must now think what he did that day was completely unnecessary and presumptuous. Bu Tianna praises her, saying the key was calling him worn out, because hinting someone is past it is enough to shred their confidence.

Xu Chi wishes she had taken a picture of his face. He shouldn’t have crushed her self-esteem that way. When Ma Ke calls, Bu Tianna says there’s something she wants to tell her, then decides it can wait. Ma Ke tells Xu Chi that Bu Tianna is joining their team, and since they’re close, he wants Xu Chi to help her get up to speed.

Blindsided by Bu Tianna

Lu Le tells Xu Chi she was there when Bu Tianna spoke with Mr. Pi. Bu Tianna said her family is partnering with Ande Energy and she was worried about conflicts of interest, and because she’d heard Xu Chi say digital finance had potential, she wanted to switch teams. Naturally, Mr. Pi moved her to Celestial.

Xu Chi says more colleagues are fine on a busy project. Lu Le tells her to stop pretending and stay away from Bu Tianna. Xu Chi used to be so sharp, so why is she so naive now? What would someone born with a silver spoon want from her, other than another pair of eyes? Xu Chi leaves, saying she’s delivering a document for Deng Anran, which sets off fresh office gossip.

Lu Le asks whether Xu Chi really thinks there are true friends in an office, just because people chat and eat lunch together. Even she and Lin Long, who were college classmates and roommates for four years, would compete for a promotion without holding back. That’s exactly why Lin Long and Cindy can’t stand each other.

Shaken, Xu Chi replays every moment with Bu Tianna: the help, the right hand speech, the claim that she liked her, the promise to be really good to her after the subway station, and Bu Tianna shielding her while she cried. Ye Xinzhi calls repeatedly, and she ignores him.

A Reckless Cure

Outside her mother’s old building, Xu Chi apologises to her mother for forgetting her lesson. She trusted someone too easily and has become their stepping stone. Ye Xinzhi finds her there. He has been trying to reach her all afternoon, and even the front desk couldn’t find her.

He says Du was worried and asked him to look for her, and he remembered she’d said her mother’s old apartment was nearby. She insists she’s fine. He asks if this is what fine looks like. When she refuses to tell him what happened, he says if she wants to punish and isolate herself, he’ll play along.

He drags her into his car and puts her seat belt on for her, bringing their faces close together. Xu Chi falls asleep in his car and wakes up on a closed testing road as Ye Xinzhi floors it. He tells her to relax since there are no cars and no people, while she screams at him to stop and asks if he’s lost his mind. When he finally stops, he asks if that eased the heaviness in her chest a little.

Facing the Real Fear

Once she’s cried it out, Xu Chi apologises for snapping. Ye Xinzhi tells her not to apologise. Being backstabbed by someone you trust at work really hurts, and she’ll get used to it after a few times. Xu Chi says she isn’t sad, she just feels like an idiot. Ever since her mother died, she swore to be independent and guarded and never trust or rely on anyone.

But because Bu Tianna helped her a few times, she let her guard down and told her everything, even about her crush. Ye Xinzhi asks where things stand. Bu Tianna has only just joined the team, so is Xu Chi giving up before the fight has even started? Or does she think she can’t compete?

He doesn’t believe she’s crying because she feels stupid. Deep down, she’s insecure and doesn’t have the courage to confront Bu Tianna. He asks if he’s right, and finally she says yes. He says that if she can still answer, there’s still hope, and tells her to confess everything else that’s bothering her for leniency.

Xu Chi admits that although she always said she didn’t envy Bu Tianna’s advantages, she has been avoiding a head-to-head contest because she’s afraid of losing. She hasn’t lost a competition since college and is scared that losing to Bu Tianna will break her perfect record. She doesn’t want to be replaced.

Ye Xinzhi challenges her to the hand slap game and beats her over and over. He tells her that if she loses a few times, all that junk in her head will disappear. She’s someone he chose, so even if she doesn’t believe in herself, she should believe in his judgment. Tomorrow, she should go back and take Bu Tianna on directly.

If she wins, the self-punishment stops. If she loses, she can come and learn from him. Xu Chi protests that she isn’t punishing herself, she’s working off anxiety, and her therapist said… He cuts her off and says he understands, because he went through an angsty phase too.

Seeing her laugh, he says she’s clearly fine, and tells her to get in the car because waiting this long isn’t easy at his age. She asks how old he is anyway, and he reminds her she’s the one who called him old and pointed out his crow’s feet. He’s keeping a tally.

“Let Me Be Your Angel”

On the drive back, Xu Chi asks if he goes to that road often. He says he does when he’s stressed, sad or having nightmares. Surprised that someone so strong has nightmares, she listens as he admits everyone has weaknesses. He’s afraid of heights and of losing control, so he can’t sleep anywhere high.

Flying is fine with the glass, or if he’s far enough from the edge. That road heals him, so he thought it could heal her too. Then Xu Chi asks him outright why he cares so much and helps her so much. Does he like her? Ye Xinzhi asks her not to joke like that while he’s driving. She says she isn’t joking. She may be young, but she isn’t clueless.

He’s always so good to her. She’s an adult in Beijing, so what danger could she be in? He claimed Du was worried, but she barely knows Du, so it was really him. Calling it a senior appreciating talent feels like a stretch, yet the other night at his apartment he deliberately let her see that woman. She’s confused, and she isn’t trying to prove anything. She just wants to know where they stand.

Ye Xinzhi says she’s right. Of course he has feelings for her, or why would he keep helping? But there are many kinds of feelings, not just romantic ones. It’s like liking a celebrity without wanting to date them. There’s a lot of grey between black and white. She made a strong impression in her interview, and her personality, thinking and way of handling things all click with his.

He helps her not only because he hopes she’ll become his assistant, but to make up for a regret from his younger self. Xu Chi jokes that he’d better not say she looks like his ex-wife. He tells her she watches too many dramas. When he was betrayed and at his lowest, nobody appeared out of nowhere to pull him up.

All your life you fight for power and struggle, finally get over one small hill, just to earn the freedom to do what you want. He wasn’t lucky back then and never got his angel. Since he has the chance now, he wants to be hers.

He tells her she’s a smart, capable girl and he really enjoys working with her, and asks if she understands. Xu Chi says of course, she misunderstood, it’s simply basic appreciation between people. Ye Xinzhi remarks that she must have aced listening and reading comprehension in college. She replies that she also scored high on stress tolerance in her psych test.

That night, Xu Chi drafts a social media post, hidden from clients, Ye the Legend and Bu Tianna, about a friend who met someone very good to her, who said he liked her but not romantically. Her friend feels both calm and lost, and she wonders how to help. She deletes it character by character and discards it.

Irreplaceable Episode 7 Recap: My Thoughts

Oooh, does Mr. Shen have a thing for Lin Long?? I loved Xu Chi’s quip about why she didn’t get a blessing too, and although he faltered, he had a great comeback!

Lin Long and Xu Chi getting along so well now is great. I loved that Xu Chi doesn’t hold a grudge or kick Lin Long while she’s down, and instead treats her with real empathy through her divorce and recovery. The fact that Lin Long can bring up something so shameful she did in the past is a healthy, adult sign of remorse. Friendships that grow out of animosity often turn into long lasting, loyal relationships.

That whole scene of Xu Chi crushing Ye Xinzhi was so good! She’s still humiliated by how he crushed her self-esteem, and her payback was great. Her nonchalant flick through the photos until she casually landed on theirs was really well done! I’m hoping he’s jealous of Yang Rui. I mean, why does he care who her friends are at work? Hahaha, he deserved a serving of his own medicine.

Then came the twist with Bu Tianna, and it stung. Xu Chi opened up to her about her plans for digital finance, only to be blindsided when Bu Tianna moved onto the very same team. I’m torn. Part of me feels it was cold, but part of me sees it as the harsh reality of cutthroat consulting, where everyone ultimately looks out for themselves. Either way, the sting of a trusted friend’s ambition getting in the way of loyalty is heartbreaking.

I loved that this episode gave us more emotional character development behind all the business talk and mentoring. I loved that Ye Xinzhi was worried and found a way to get her to let go and talk. The high-speed drive on the testing road was chaotic but so effective, finally forcing out all her pent-up frustration. Getting to the root of Xu Chi’s unhappiness was so good. Understanding that she’s upset because of insecurity, and admitting it out loud, is huge. Now she can focus on how best to tackle Bu Tianna’s betrayal.

And man, she sure has guts to ask him outright if he has feelings for her! His response was so mature, and I didn’t feel it was fake in any way or that he was covering up his own feelings. He genuinely cares about her, and I love that he wants to be her angel when he never had one, paying it forward.

His motivation feels grounded and honest, which makes their connection feel earned rather than forced by standard romance tropes. Green flag all the way. But neither we nor Xu Chi are fully convinced, are we??

Watching Jinmai play a strong, business minded and determined young woman who also has to deal with her insecurities and years of grief for her mother is great. She’s really good in this role. And I think Daxun is doing a great job too. Their chemistry is good and highly convincing so far. He portrays a seasoned consultant really well without coming across as arrogant or self-absorbed, just very experienced and mature.
