TL;DR (Quick Overview)
As Yuanzhou collapses and Wen Ruosen faces charges, Xu Chi works herself to exhaustion and misses the warning that her mother’s old building has been declared unsafe after a sinkhole. Ye Xinzhi abandons his long-awaited revenge meeting to find her, and after she collapses with ear barotrauma, he helps her let go of the apartment, shows her the simple joys of everyday life and proposes, then lets her wear the ring on a necklace until she’s ready, sealing it with their first proper kiss. Meanwhile, Shen Jin wins Lin Long over by showing her his own flaws, while Zhao Heng confronts Bu Tianna over her blind date and her refusal to acknowledge him.
Haggling Over the Apartment
With Ye Xinzhi’s help, Xu Chi can now pay in full for her mother’s old apartment, but the owner’s family has come in person to push the price up again. Xu Chi refuses to budge, telling them that since she has already agreed to pay in full, she can’t keep giving in. Her offer stays at 3.98 million, not a penny more.
After they leave, Zhu, the agent, urges her to bend a little, since the difference isn’t huge and the whole family showing up shows good faith. He offers to try to meet somewhere in the middle. Xu Chi says the owner is too greedy. The moment he heard she’d pay in full, he raised the price, and if she agrees now, he’ll only raise it again.
Since he has already backed out of the online signing, she’ll freeze him out for a few days. She negotiates for a living and knows how sellers think. Zhu warns her the owner’s son keeps telling him not to sell and to wait for prices to recover, and reminds her that her boyfriend seems generous. Xu Chi says that’s exactly why she can’t throw money around like she’s rich, and asks Zhu to keep calling the owner and push the price down.
Yuanzhou Collapses
The news reports that Benyuan, Yuanzhou and several other digital collectibles platforms have collapsed, with more than 300 police reports filed and an official investigation underway. Xu Chi calls Ye Xinzhi to ask if this is him and Du closing the net. He says it’s a coincidence, months ahead of their plan, but with Wen Ruosen expanding at full throttle, security problems were only a matter of time.
Now the whole plan has to move up. Xu Chi offers to help, but he tells her she has enough on her plate with the project and the apartment. When Bu Tianna calls about a file Xu Chi forgot to send while haggling all night, Ye Xinzhi tells her not to push herself so hard because he’s worried, and asks her to message him when she lands in Shenzhen.
Shen Jin Bares All
Late at night, Shen Jin turns up at Lin Long’s door holding a box, saying he’s sick with a serious illness and asking her to sit down so he can explain his condition. He opens the box and shows her a photo of himself with bald patches two years ago, when his company was broke and he was pitching to investors every day.
One morning on his way to a meeting, he noticed the patches and went from salon to salon at 7am begging someone to shave his head. When Lin Long asks what this has to do with his illness, he shows her his diagnosis: a severe stomach ulcer, so bad he wishes he could lock himself in the bathroom for days.
He lays out his ID, household register and diploma, then his family. His parents divorced when he was little, his father ran off with someone else, and he never got on with his stepfather. He shows her his two best friends, and finally the Sun Wukong figure he has carried everywhere since third grade.
When Lin Long still doesn’t see what this has to do with her, he explains. She rejected him to keep her dignity because when they met, she was at her lowest, dealing with her divorce and hospital visits, and he saw her worst moments. Now he has shown her the realest version of himself, so they’re even.
He isn’t as glamorous as she thinks. Because of Bolo, his apartment is still mortgaged, and if Bolo blows up like those collectiblesโ platforms, he might not even afford a hair transplant. He tells her he’s saying all this because he really likes her. He used to like the tough front she put on.
Now he likes the woman who, after being knocked down a thousand times, still gets back up and tries to live a beautiful life. He asks her to give him a chance and to give herself one too. She can bring her lipstick and he’ll bring his toys, and they’ll have drinks, hot pot and a nice trip.
He steps in closer to Lin Long who is backed onto the kitchen bench, unsure of what to do with her mixed emotions. As she battles to make a decision, she finally tells him to stop talking, and instead of answering in words, she kisses him.
Zhao Heng’s Two Friends
The next morning, Bu Tianna sees a photo on moments uploaded Shen Jin saying it’s the first time he has ever been thankful for his mother’s blind date setup, and calling her beautiful, continuing to keep up the pretences. Zhao Heng sees it and turns cold and he asks for them to go for lunch.
At lunch, Zhao Heng eats fervently and he is clearly upset. When Bu Tianna demands to know what’s wrong and threatens to break up with him, he asks whether they were ever even together, so how can they break up? Seeing the message, Bu Tianna explains she did have a meal with Shen Jin and joked about Lin Long, but her family has social obligations she can’t avoid.
Zhao Heng tells her about two friends of his. One is a schemer who knows his girlfriend goes on blind dates and still acts sweet, using her guilt to sleep with her, get her pregnant and marry her, calling it a win. The other is average. He gets upset and wonders what kind of relationship he really has when, after all this time, his girlfriend still won’t acknowledge him in front of colleagues and friends, and thinks blind dates are normal socialising.
He asks which friend she’d choose. Bu Tianna asks if he wants to fight, pointing out Xu Chi and Ye Xinzhi know about them. Zhao Heng says he doesn’t want to fight. He just wants her to tell him which version of Zhao Heng she prefers. Bu Tianna calls Shen Jin demanding to know what he’s playing at. He tells her she’ll be thanking him later and hangs up.
Officer Rabbit Strikes
At Celestial, Xu Chi overhears colleagues saying Wen Ruosen is facing criminal charges, dragged into the platform collapses, with buyers protesting at his gallery and accusing him of rat trading. She borrows a phone to call Ye Xinzhi, who confirms this time it was them. Du’s team saw the protests and pushed a few trending topics.
Xu Chi shares intel from a regulatory meeting she sat in on that morning: a bank is pulling loans from several collectiblesโ companies with bad reputations, including Yuanzhou. Ye Xinzhi says he’ll tip off Wen’s lender in Beijing. Xu Chi asks if Officer Rabbit isn’t impressive, and he agrees. She tells him she’s going nonstop because final delivery is next week.
She has slept about six hours in two days, has finished deliveries for two branches and is heading to the airport for Chengdu in half an hour. She also mentions Bu Tianna is having a bad day after Celestial rejected one of her files again. She’s putting on a brave face, but Xu Chi knows she’s crushed. Ye Xinzhi asks for her location.
The sly old fox wants to treat his little rabbit to a luxury ride with a zero-gravity seat so she can get some real sleep. His driver arrives with flowers and hot chocolate he insisted she drink. When Xu Chi says it’s a waste since she can’t take flowers on the plane, the driver says that makes it even more romantic. Even if it’s only half an hour of joy, Mr. Ye wants her to have it.
Missing the Warning
At the airport, Xu Chi is absorbed in a call with Mr. Zheng when Zhu messages urgently, saying something has happened that he can’t explain over WeChat. Assuming it’s about the price, she brushes him off multiple times and hangs up before he can explain. The exhaustion is showing. During a branch presentation, she names the wrong province before correcting herself, admitting she has lost all sense of time and place.
On the plane, she finally reads Zhu’s message. An owner at No. 91 Yong’an Road illegally dug a basement, river water flooded in and a thirty-metre sinkhole opened, leaving about ten nearby buildings cracked. Experts have declared No. 92, her mother’s building, unsafe, and residents are being evacuated. The plane hits turbulence as it descends as her world comes crashing down.
Choosing the Future
Unable to reach her phone, Ye Xinzhi sees her flight has landed and tells his driver to skip his venue and take him to Yong’an Road No. 92. He calls Du and asks him to run the media strategy meeting. Du is furious. This was Ye Xinzhi’s plan from the start. They finally got Yuanzhou to blow up, and Du brought in the best people to steer public opinion, so who will call the shots now?
Ye Xinzhi says he has drafted the plan and will email it. When Du realises it’s about Xu Chi’s apartment, he asks how Ye Xinzhi can let some girl’s apartment ruin everything they’ve worked for, when he has been dreaming of making Wen pay for Jingshang’s victims.
Ye Xinzhi says their plan has been in the works for years, and a hiccup with the media won’t change the big picture. He asks Du to say he got sick or missed his flight. Du asks if she’s really more important than the revenge he has waited years for. Ye Xinzhi says yes. His hatred for Wen is in the past, but she is his future.
At the cordoned off building, residents push against officials, desperate to retrieve their belongings. Ye Xinzhi frantically looks for Xu Chi and finds her standing frozen against the wall. He tells her there are too many people and asks her to come home with him. She says she can’t hear him, then collapses.
I Am Here
Xu Chi wakes in hospital with ear barotrauma. Still unable to hear, she panics, starts crying and asks for her laptop, insisting she needs her revised files for the office tomorrow. Ye Xinzhi types messages on his phone telling her the doctor has treated her, she needs rest, and he’s here so she shouldn’t be scared. She insists she’s fine and not scared. He keeps typing that he is here with her, and stays by her side until she sleeps.
Back at his place, the loss of the apartment brings back memories of her mother sobbing over Xu Chi’s father, crying that she has nothing left. Xu Chi starts to break down, sobbing that she has nothing left either. Ye Xinzhi tells her she has him. Seeing her try to hold back, he puts in earplugs so she can cry as loudly as she needs, telling her that now he can’t hear either, just like her. She clings to him tightly and finally lets it all out.

Bowling With Mr. Shen
At a bowling alley, Shen Jin brags about his aim and asks Lin Long to feel his biceps. She reminds him she’s here for work and he insisted on tagging along. He says he moved a conference call just to sneak out to see her, because they’ve just got together and there should be some romance.
Then he suggests she quit Maxmise and join his company. Lin Long tells him she thought he was different from her ex-husband. He says it was an offhand comment, and he only doesn’t want her working so hard. She says she doesn’t like people planning her life, and he agrees.
Let Me Be Your Security
The next morning, Xu Chi’s hearing has returned, though she still has some ringing and a slight fever. She immediately hunts for her laptop because she has a 9:10 meeting, but Ye Xinzhi has already asked Sha Sha for a day off on her behalf. The doctor said normal turbulence wouldn’t cause barotrauma, so it must be fatigue and stress. If even he can take a day off, so can she. The world won’t stop turning.
When he says he needs a serious talk, Xu Chi jumps in with her own self review. Her biggest mistake was overconfidence. He told her to act fast, but she was annoyed by the price rise, wanted to show off her negotiating skills and stopped watching what was happening outside.
Ye Xinzhi reminds her he’s her boyfriend, not her boss, and she doesn’t need to report every mistake. At least the deal didn’t go through, or her money would be gone. But money doesn’t matter. Her health does. Her ears are life giving her a warning.
She’s too driven and wants to win at everything, even secretly competing with Bu Tianna. Is it really so hard to accept that Bu Tianna became project manager first? Nobody goes through life without failing, and a consultant who has never got used to being surpassed isn’t a real pro.
Xu Chi says she has already failed. An unsafe building can’t be sold, so she’ll never buy her mother’s apartment back. It was the place her mother always dreamed about, and her whole sense of security. Ye Xinzhi points out that from the outside, the apartment no longer gives her security.
She used to run there whenever something went wrong, but during her leave she never went, and when she got busy, she even forgot to call the agent back. He asks what her mother’s last wish really was, and whether she made Xu Chi promise to buy it back.
Xu Chi admits her mother only wanted her to be okay. Ye Xinzhi says the apartment was a goal she set herself, a shackle she put on herself. Her mother would have wanted her to live happily and healthily, not worn out like this. Xu Chi says that without the apartment as her goal, she doesn’t know what the point of her life is. If she doesn’t work overtime, she doesn’t know where to go.
He takes her out onto the balcony. He rented here because you can see the city’s bustling CBD and still feel everyday life. He points out the old trees where peach, pear and crabapple blossoms bloom in spring, the alley with his favourite barber who talks too much but cuts hair brilliantly, and a baozi shop by the patch of green with buns so juicy they burn your mouth.
He asks if she has ever experienced any of it. She shakes her head. Her life is just offices, hotels and airports. He says he’ll show her from now on. There are so many simple, everyday things worth appreciating. He asks her to forget the old apartment and let him give her that sense of security instead.
Ye Xinzhi Proposes
Ye Xinzhi takes out a ring he bought long ago at the jeweller next to P&J, where they first met, and kneels to propose, asking her not to think he’s making a move because she’s vulnerable. Xu Chi, in tears, says she’s really happy, but she doesn’t think she’s ready. He says he knew she’d say that, and produces a chain so the ring becomes a necklace.
She can wear it for now and tell him whenever she’s ready. As he fastens it around her neck, Xu Chi sobs and he holds her tightly. She thanks him, then jokes that she should thank herself too for outperforming at that interview and moving the heavens enough to meet him. And this time, they share their first proper kiss.

Back on Her Feet
Back at work, Xu Chi presents the training and workshops she delivered to four of Celestial’s branches. The client thanks her and tells Bu Tianna they hope the rest of the delivery goes just as smoothly. Bu Tianna promises it will, and announces she has booked a celebration dinner for after the project wraps next week, since everyone must be sick of the Celestial cafeteria.
Zhao Heng checks on Xu Chi’s health, but when Bu Tianna approaches, he gets up and leaves. Bu Tianna has driven home especially to fetch a nourishing soup her nanny made, and orders Xu Chi to drink every drop. Xu Chi insists she’s fine, but admits it’s pretty good.
Irreplaceable Episode 16 Recap: My Thoughts
Shen Jin and Lin Long are hilarious. After what Bu Tianna said to him, he had an epiphany: one reason Lin Long keeps rejecting him is that he has seen her at her absolute worst. She’s a proud woman who doesn’t feel she has any dignity left, and the stigma of being divorced makes it all the more overwhelming. His tactic of showing her his own weaknesses and owning them let her finally put her guard down. And that kiss! Second chances definitely do exist.
Bu Tianna and Zhao Heng… what a mess, and so complicated. He’s right. Were they ever really together? I loved his “two friends” speech, because it showed he isn’t angry about one dinner. He’s hurt that she still won’t acknowledge him.
Ye Xinzhi, what an amazing man you are. For years he has worked towards revenge, and when the moment for his big coup finally came, he chose his present and future over his past. Going straight to the apartment was absolutely the right thing to do, because he knew what it would do to Xu Chi, and sure enough, he was right. So many beautiful gestures in that whole arc:
- Putting in earplugs so she could cry her heart out as she clung to him in despair. You could see how much pain he was in for her.
- Finally convincing her to let go of the apartment, because it was never about the physical building. She was clinging to a past that gave her the security she thought she needed. But what she said was true too. That apartment has been her main motivation for so long, so without it, what’s her north star?
- On the balcony, telling her about the little things we take for granted. In such a fast-paced world, being able to stop and smell the roses is a luxury. Take the time.
- And OMG, that proposal, and the fact that he knew she wasn’t ready! That’s how perceptive he is, and how much he knows and treasures her. The ring on a necklace was such a green flag moment, respecting her boundary instead of pushing. And finally, a proper kiss!
I also loved how the show called out Xu Chi’s toxic grind. Her panicking about her laptop and files from a hospital bed was so sad and so realistic.
Jinmai, I felt all your pain, and that’s probably the best I’ve seen you act in any role. It felt raw, convincing and so vulnerable. Well done.
A beautiful episode across all three couples, the difficulties they face and the love they have for each other. Why are we all so messy! This drama depicts life so well across its many emotions and personalities, and what everyone needs from their partners.
