TL;DR (Quick Overview)
Xu Chi starts at Hezong and gets cornered into Wang Yuan’s Huaxin project, sparking a tense fight with Ye Xinzhi that reopens her childhood wound of her father leaving to “get some air.” They make up, she joins his team, and her clever connection with All Buy’s Mr. Su helps them land an eight figure deal, celebrated with a kiss on his old school basketball court, though colleagues start gossiping about her. Meanwhile, Zhao Heng secretly gives Bu Tianna’s father a business plan for her future at Siwei, and when she explodes at him, he ends their relationship and leaves for two months in Venezuela.
First Day at Hezong
On her first morning at Hezong, Xu Chi struggles to register her fingerprint for the clock in system until Ye Xinzhi steps in to help. After he leaves, the receptionist is amazed she didn’t even thank him, since he’s the firm’s youngest partner and about to become a senior partner. Xu Chi blames first day awkwardness, keeping their relationship to herself.
Wang Yuan checks in, explaining that only partners and above get fixed desks, and everyone else books shared seats through the office system. The office is so empty because once people are on a project, many don’t come in for a month.
When Xu Chi says there are dozens of projects in the pool and she can’t get through them all, he recommends his own: the Huaxin overseas efficiency optimisation project. It runs just three to four months and sits in the IT industry she already knows. Xu Chi likes the idea of finishing quickly and reaching project manager sooner, and registers for it before leaving work.

A Disappointed Boyfriend
That evening, Ye Xinzhi takes her boxing, coaching her to punch harder until she accidentally lands a hit on him. When he steals a quick kiss on her cheek, she reminds him they’re in public, and he points out it’s late and nobody’s around. He suggests dinner and a short getaway before her Hezong work properly begins, saying otherwise he’s failing as a boyfriend. Xu Chi says she’s in no mood for a trip.
Wang Yuan calls asking her to come back for a Huaxin meeting, and Ye Xinzhi offers to drive her. On the way, he mentions he has filtered some projects from the pool for her, starting with Mingzhang Petrochemical. Xu Chi tells him she has already picked Huaxin, because Wang Yuan said it’s short and would get her to project manager faster. Absorbed in the Huaxin materials, she misses the disappointment on his face.
On their run the next morning, Ye Xinzhi asks her to reconsider. Huaxin may be short, but it’s based in the Middle East, which could be inconvenient. And as nice as Wang Yuan is, he lacks a decisive edge, or he’d have signed it by now.
As a new joiner, she should pick a project she can ease into and make a splash with. Xu Chi agrees he has a point, but worries how it will look to back out after talking to Wang Yuan and spending a day on research. He says people come and go from pool projects all the time at the start. She agrees to find a way to tell Wang Yuan.
Cornered by the Boss
Xu Chi barely begins her conversation with Wang Yuan when Mr. Kai, Hezong’s China president and a senior partner fresh from closing a huge deal in South America, arrives asking about the firm’s new powerhouse.
Wang Yuan introduces Xu Chi and announces she’s already on his Huaxin team. Mr. Kai says he saw the proposal Huaxin rejected and has ideas for improving it, and invites them to discuss it for an hour. With her participation presented as settled in front of the company’s leader, Xu Chi has no opening to withdraw.
Going Out for Air
The meeting makes her late for dinner. When she starts explaining that she ran into Wang Yuan the moment she arrived, Ye Xinzhi cuts her off and tells her to eat, since he ordered her favourite black cod. He goes silent, and the meal turns tense. Eventually he apologises, saying he stayed quiet because he was afraid of losing control of his emotions.
Xu Chi asks if he’s giving her the cold shoulder because she didn’t listen to him and joined Huaxin anyway. He says he knows she must have reasons, but why does she trust Wang Yuan so much more than him? Xu Chi insists she doesn’t. He’s the one refusing to hear her explanation. Ye Xinzhi says they’re both upset, so he’ll step out for some air to cool off.
His words trigger a buried memory. Xu Chi remembers her parents fighting, and her father saying he was going out for some air, then her mother sobbing that he didn’t want them anymore. Xu Chi leaves the restaurant before Ye Xinzhi returns. Unable to reach her, he calls Bu Tianna and asks her to let him know Xu Chi is safe if she hears from her.
Finally, Xu Chi messages him. She got worked up, accidentally switched off her phone, and is downstairs at her apartment. He rushes over and they hold each other. Xu Chi explains that her father once said he just needed some air, and never came back.
She also tells him she was planning to tell Wang Yuan, but Mr. Kai turned up and Wang Yuan announced she was on the team, so she couldn’t say no in front of the boss. Ye Xinzhi says none of that matters. He was in the wrong for taking his emotions out on her. He was so scared she’d leave him. He’s moved that even while hurting so badly, she still reached out first, and promises it won’t happen again.
Joining Ye the Legend’s Team
The next day, Xu Chi tells Wang Yuan she has to withdraw from Huaxin. She realised while working late that her mentor, Professor Yu, heads the Chinese review panel for the Saudi project Huaxin is bidding on, so the rules require her to recuse herself. She hands over all the research she has prepared.
Wang Yuan asks if it’s really a coincidence, but accepts it. Ye Xinzhi also drops by to offer Wang Yuan any help he needs. When Xu Chi asks if he went to see Wang Yuan to quietly get her off the team, Ye Xinzhi says no. Since she had already joined, he gathered some material to help Huaxin.
Xu Chi promises to come to him whenever something big happens from now on. Then she asks him to treat her like everyone else on his team, so nobody gossips and they’ll recognise what she can do. Surprised, he asks if she means his team.
She explains Bu Tianna lectured her all night that keeping her distance was too rigid. They’re already together and the company doesn’t ban couples, so why put herself through starting over with a new supervisor? She asks her boyfriend for a private consultation on which of his projects suits her best.
He suggests All Buy, which is pivoting and needs market consulting for Belt and Road countries. Xu Chi wants to land it as her first win at Hezong, promising to be his best assistant. When he starts to apologise again, she tells him to save it. He says she’s his best assistant, irreplaceable. She corrects him. She wants to be his best partner.

White Dragon Horse
At the meeting, All Buy’s Mr. Su tells them frankly that while Hezong is top tier and its proposal is solid, his colleagues prefer boutique firms specialising in e-commerce, since outsiders struggle to understand their niche market. Ye Xinzhi says consulting is all about data and experience.
Hezong partnered with major Japanese trading houses back in the 1990s, so it understands supply chain resilience and local food safety rules in Southeast Asia far better than domestic e-commerce consultants. Mr. Su says he believes it and will try to persuade his team.
Xu Chi then asks to add something. She reveals her nickname used to be Junior Wind Piercer. Mr. Su lights up, saying his was White Dragon Horse. Before All Buy spun off from Youpin Yanxuan, everyone there used nicknames from Journey to the West.
Xu Chi explains that both she and Ye Xinzhi have deep retail experience. She worked at Youpin Yanxuan, and Ye Xinzhi ran warehouses and logistics as P&J’s operations chief. They’ve both unloaded freezer trucks, dealt with suppliers demanding payment and handled goods ruined by power cuts. When fresh food e-commerce goes overseas, warehousing, logistics and freight management have to come first.
Other firms’ managers might know influencers, ad spend and ROI, but they won’t know how to set fair performance standards for the fish gutting station. And their pitch deck is probably the same one they’ve polished for other e-commerce clients for years. When Mr. Su suggests they might have repackaged it, she guesses the colour scheme, and she’s right.
Ye Xinzhi adds that All Buy’s project is a lot like his Tianhe Air work, both focused on AI driven efficiency, and they guarantee they won’t cut so deep they hit a vital artery.
Afterwards, Ye Xinzhi calls her the MVP. Xu Chi says he taught her that a consulting manager’s ultimate weapon is speaking the client’s language. She admits she only worked at Youpin Yanxuan for one winter break, but when she found out Mr. Su came from there, she knew it was her way in. Mr. Su then calls, asking for the draft contract by 6pm the next day because his legal director is taking leave that weekend.
When she hangs up, Ye Xinzhi doesn’t ask, knowing she won’t last thirty seconds before telling him. She squeals that they closed it. He says it’s all thanks to her and wants to take her somewhere.
Under the Stars
He takes her to his old high school basketball court, where he used to play all the time. They shoot hoops, and he explains he brought her here because he wants them to know each other’s lives better. They share a kiss.
Lying under the sky, Xu Chi asks if he has ever seen a shooting star, saying people in idol dramas always wait for one to make a wish. Ye Xinzhi says they don’t need to make a wish, because they’re already happy.
Office Whispers
At the All Buy signing ceremony, colleagues marvel that Xu Chi has landed an eight figure deal so soon after joining. One needles Wang Yuan for recommending her. Wang Yuan says he can’t beat Richard anyway.
The colleague hints at something between Ye Xinzhi and Xu Chi, then accuses Wang Yuan of quietly poaching Ye Xinzhi’s girlfriend to get his help cracking Huaxin. Too bad Ye Xinzhi knows to recuse himself, while the girl doesn’t play by the rules and has boldly ridden Wang Yuan’s connections to get ahead. Wang Yuan is irritated, and Mr. Kai overhears.
Bu Tianna Back at Siwei
Over lunch, Xu Chi tells Bu Tianna that her All Buy team has only six people, since the client wants a lean setup, and she’s off to Hangzhou for client research for three months. Bu Tianna, now back at Siwei Group, says she misses leading troops into battle and is going mouldy from boredom.
Her mother was worried she’d be blamed if the annual audit uncovered problems in finance, so she had her father move Bu Tianna to R&D, despite her having no technical background. A naked eye 3D display test left her so dizzy she vomited for two days and took leave.
After Xu Chi leaves, her little brother calls from his watch. He just won a roller-skating competition, and while video calling their father, he spotted Zhao Heng in the background at the equestrian centre. Afraid their father had called him in to yell at him again, Xiaojie rushed to warn her.
A Parting Gift
Bu Tianna storms in, accusing her father of going too far by summoning her boyfriend as if he were an employee. Her father tells her to ask Zhao Heng herself. Zhao Heng explains he came on his own. During his break between projects, he used Maxmise’s database, his analysis of Siwei Group and his understanding of her to put together a small business plan and succession analysis for Mr. Bu.
Ever since she returned to Siwei a month ago, she hasn’t seemed herself, so he thought an objective outside perspective might help. Bu Tianna is furious that he discussed her future with her father without her permission and orders him out. He leaves the USB drive with Mr. Bu.
Bu Tianna asks her father to show her more respect. He asks if she has considered what an outsider gains from this. She says Zhao Heng is just flattering him, since he admitted he loves both her and the benefits. Her father asks if she really thinks Zhao Heng could keep a private meeting with him secret.
Since she wants to take over, she should calm down and think. Why would he come privately knowing it would anger her, and why stick his nose into Siwei’s affairs so early, risking both their anger? Maybe he genuinely wants to help her. Her father admits he still doesn’t like the kid, who’s too calculating, but the proposal is good, and a lot of thought went into it.
The Breakup
Bu Tianna confronts Zhao Heng, saying what she hates most is the person she trusts most going behind her back and deciding things for her. Who does he think he is? He’s her boyfriend, but so what? Zhao Heng reminds her that when she left Maxmise, she handed in her resignation before telling him, even though they were already together.
She accuses him of getting revenge, of acting like a kept husband, and tells him that without her, he’d be a nobody. He says he’s still himself, even if they break up. He came prepared to end things. When she accuses him of threatening her, he says he’s trying to survive. He admits he’s a schemer who wanted to climb through connections, but after a year together, even through a month of fighting and cold shoulders, he realised he truly loves her. But he can’t take being called a kept man.
He just wants equality. When she says someone mooching off her has no right to talk about equality, he snaps that her guard is too high and she’s paranoid. Does she think he doesn’t love her if he doesn’t obey her? What about basic respect? If he were only using her, he’d lie and keep her happy, but that kind of love won’t last.
He did this precisely because he loves her, knowing she might break up with him. He doesn’t want to wait five or ten years until he no longer loves her and they both end up heartbroken. He was gambling. The USB drive is his parting gift, built with real effort and a professional eye for her career and Siwei’s future. But he lost the bet. He asks whether, in the year they’ve been together, he has ever spent a cent of her money or done one thing to wrong her.
Halfway Across the World
Distraught, Bu Tianna asks Xu Chi whether Zhao Heng is truly heartbroken or just backing off to make her cave. Xu Chi admits their situation is too complicated, and with her limited experience, she doesn’t know either. When Bu Tianna apologises for pulling her away from her new project, Xu Chi says nothing matters more than her.
Lin Long calls with news from Lu Le. Zhao Heng has joined the Haiji Petroleum project and is heading to its Venezuela site today, where he’ll be in South America for at least two months. Xu Chi asks Lin Long to check when he booked his ticket.
He booked it three days ago, but changed it two hours ago to an 8pm flight that night. Bu Tianna realises he really was gambling. He had already made his decision and only gave up just now. Venezuela, halfway across the world for two months, is the perfect breakup cooling off period.
Xu Chi tries to say that isn’t what he meant, but Bu Tianna insists she’s fine. It’s just a breakup, and if she drags it out after he chose to end it this way, she’ll look pathetic. She keeps repeating that she’s really fine.
Irreplaceable Episode 18 Recap: My Thoughts
This episode, we watch the two of them navigate a new work dynamic, and he really doesn’t mind her working at Hezong, which is great! I did feel their little spat over pulling out of the project she first chose was a bit overboard.
I guess they wanted to bring in the whole “going out for air and never coming back” trauma, and while he should have let her explain rather than cutting her off, his apology felt way over the top. I can see both sides of her choosing Wang Yuan’s project. She wanted to keep her career separate from the relationship, but Ye Xinzhi’s industry instincts about the project were spot on.
They have an excellent working relationship, so joining his team was only ever going to be a success. Watching her win over Mr. Su with the Journey to the West nicknames was a great moment. The little peck on the cheek he gave her at the gym was cute, and then they kissed on the basketball court.
The Zhao Heng and Bu Tianna breakup felt a bit abrupt. While his intentions were good, and even her father said so, it went from anger to breakup too quickly. His angry speech, however, was very convincing and absolutely true.
He finally let go of all the frustrations he had held back over a year of dating. It was only a matter of time, and if Bu Tianna doesn’t change her ways, she’ll lose him. It felt very authentic for a modern drama, showing how adult relationships can fracture over pride and logistics despite real love.
I can’t say I thought much of this episode overall. Even their kiss on the basketball court didn’t feel overly romantic. It feels like the show has started trading its emotional core for faster paced business subplots, and I didn’t feel as locked in as before. Hopefully the last two episodes redeem it and give us a great ending.
