TL;DR (Quick Overview)
A promotion Yanchen never asked for keeps him tied to Qining, while a mischievous prank pulled by Xiaonan drags Gui Xiao right back into his orbit. Between a genuine misunderstanding, a heartbreaking reveal about his late captain, and a request that puts them in each other’s lives again, old wounds and old feelings both resurface fast.
Pretending to Sleep
Yanchen drops Gui Xiao and her friends off, offering only a brief goodbye before driving away without so much as a glance back. The second she’s gone, Xiaonan sits up in the backseat, revealing he’d only been pretending to sleep the whole ride, hoping it might give Yanchen an opening to actually talk to her.
When Yanchen admits he simply didn’t know what to say, Xiaonan needles him further, letting slip that he’s already found out the group is heading further into the city in two days before starting their trip home, meaning there’s still time to see her again if he wants to. Yanchen doesn’t find any of it as amusing as Xiaonan clearly does.
A Question, and a Declined Gift
The next morning, Cai Yaya asks Gui Xiao outright if she and Yanchen used to date, having picked up on something off between them in the car. Gui Xiao brushes it off, insisting they’re just old schoolmates.
Cai Yaya, wanting to properly thank him for everything, tries sending a gift, only for Yanchen to politely decline it, leaving Gui Xiao visibly disappointed by the rejection, even though it wasn’t meant for her at all.
A Promotion, Not a Resignation
At the SWAT department, Yanchen learns from Commissioner Du that his resignation has been turned down entirely. Instead, he’s being promoted and reassigned to Tianwen City, close enough to Beijing that he could finally reunite properly with his family.
Yanchen admits he hasn’t decided what he actually wants to do next, and Du tells him plainly the decision’s already been made, he’s invested too many years shaping Yanchen into the officer he’s become to simply let him walk away now.
Outside, Mingyu teases him for having his resignation rejected only to land a promotion instead, joking that of course someone as skilled as him wouldn’t be let go easily. They agree to throw a proper farewell gathering.

A Prank, Well-Intentioned
Before the dinner, Yanchen sits with Xiaonan while the boy works through his homework, and catches him assuming, correctly, that he’s been texting Gui Xiao. Yanchen denies it flatly, though Xiaonan presses anyway, pointing out that regardless of who he’s texting, she’s clearly on his mind, and since she’s travelled all this way, the least he could do is show her around properly.
Yanchen shuts the conversation down by checking his homework instead, threatening to keep him home the next day if he gets anything wrong, earning himself the nickname “tyrant” in return. Xiaonan asks, almost offhandedly, when his own father’s coming home. Soon, Yanchen tells him.
A Cruel Tease
When the police station colleagues arrive for the farewell dinner, Yanchen’s stepped out to buy drinks, since deliveries can’t reach them easily given how snowed in the area is. While he’s gone, Xiaonan shows the team a sketch he’d drawn of Gui Xiao, impressing everyone with how accurate it is.
The moment Yanchen returns, one of his teammates jokingly announces they’ve just met his ex-girlfriend, and Yanchen turns instinctively, assuming Gui Xiao’s arrived, only to realize he’s been set up, the whole table immediately teasing him for the reaction.
Unbothered outwardly, he pours himself tea while the ribbing continues, his team peppering him with questions, is she married, is this a honeymoon trip, insisting there’s nothing quite like a first love.
Yanchen shuts it down, insisting too much time has passed for any of it to matter now. Finally fed up, he heads to the couch and buries himself in his notepad, and given how visibly intimidated his whole team is by him, they leave him alone almost instantly, which is oddly satisfying to watch.
A Gift, Finally Accepted
Meanwhile, Gui Xiao and Cai Yaya are out shopping for gifts, frustrated they haven’t heard back from Yanchen in days, when a text finally comes through from Mingyu instead, inviting them to the farewell gathering, giving Cai Yaya the perfect chance to deliver her gifts in person.
A Convincing Lie
Right as they’re preparing to head over, Xiaonan calls, claiming both his father and Yanchen are far too drunk for him to handle alone, begging Gui Xiao to come help. She sees through it instantly, telling him plainly she stopped falling for lies like that at his age.
Surrounded by the rest of the team egging him on, Xiaonan switches tactics, claiming Yanchen is drunk, tearful, and repeating her name over and over. This lands, and worried, she agrees to go, catching what she believes is Yanchen’s voice calling her name in the background as the call ends.
A Misunderstanding Exposed
Arriving at the restaurant, Mingyu points her toward the back, where she finds Yanchen completely sober and confused by her presence, demanding to know what she’s doing there. When she explains he called her himself, using her name, he immediately shouts for Gao Hai, who sheepishly admits to impersonating Yanchen’s voice as part of an ongoing joke, a skill he apparently uses often enough to fool people convincingly.
Furious at the prank and the total lack of boundaries behind it, Gui Xiao lets Yanchen know exactly how she feels, though she softens slightly once she realizes the misunderstanding wasn’t his doing, telling him he still owes her an apology regardless.
He offers one immediately, and she declines his offer to stay, insisting it’s time for her to leave, and that there won’t be a next time. Something about her words visibly triggers an old memory for him, a flashback to years earlier, her warning him that if he ever hung up on her again, that really would be the end, no more second chances.
A Truth That Changes Everything
Storming out, Gui Xiao tells Cai Yaya she wants to drive, clearly rattled, and Cai Yaya quietly lets Mingyu know she’s genuinely upset. Mingyu and Xiaonan push Yanchen to go after her and talk properly.
In the car, Cai Yaya learns from Mingyu the real reason behind Yanchen’s earlier resignation attempt, his former captain was killed in the line of duty just the week before, right in front of him, and he’s been carrying the guilt ever since. Hearing this second hand, Gui Xiao immediately softens.
A Favour Asked
Yanchen catches up to the car before it pulls away, asking through the rolled-down window for a genuine favour, help finding a good school in Beijing for Xiaonan. Gui Xiao warns him it isn’t a simple process, and he suggests tackling it immediately.
Mingyu convinces her to come back inside to properly discuss the details over food, and Yanchen admits honestly he had no idea the call to her had been faked. She lets it go the moment he apologizes, visibly surprised by how quickly he actually does.
Working Together
Back inside, the conversation turns practical. Mingyu explains he’s divorced with full custody of Xiaonan, though the boy’s official household registration remains under his ex-wife’s name, complicating the transfer process considerably given Mingyu’s own work relocation to Qining. They’re hoping to enrol Xiaonan in a boarding school for junior secondary in Beijing.
Drawing on experience helping one of Cai Yaya’s relatives through a similar situation, Gui Xiao suggests starting him in a private school temporarily while the registration paperwork sorts itself out, before eventually transferring him into the public system properly.
She offers to handle the arrangements herself. When she asks Yanchen when he plans to return to Beijing, he admits he isn’t sure yet, there’s still work to wrap up in Qining first.
A Quiet Moment
Mingyu excuses himself, leaving Yanchen and Gui Xiao alone as the restaurant owner lights a candle at their table, prompting a small, embarrassed laugh from her. They sit together in comfortable silence, simply looking at each other, while outside, Cai Yaya jokes to Mingyu and Xiaonan that they might all be playing matchmaker without meaning to.
A Painful Memory Surfaces
After sending her off, Yanchen returns to the table, and Mingyu, surprised he bothered walking her out at all given his usual detachment, presses him gently about whether his history with her is really still this unresolved. He admits he’s never seen Yanchen drunk before, ever, calling him the very definition of composed and proper.
Yanchen opens up, just slightly, recalling his brutal early years in Qining, swallowing snake gall, drinking goat’s blood, hauling forty kilograms through dense forest without ever once breaking down physically.
But drinking, he admits, always brings her back to him, and he once spent an entire night alone in an empty field, drinking until he blacked out, simply thinking of her. He stares out the window, visibly lost in the memory.
An Unexpected Visitor
Commissioner Du arrives at the restaurant unannounced, and the whole room falls respectfully quiet. He waves off the fuss, joking that his wife was too lazy to cook, leaving him to fend for himself, though the restaurant owner insists on preparing something anyway.
Settling in, Du mentions he’s heard about the plan to enrol Xiaonan in a Beijing boarding school, and Mingyu explains that Yanchen’s ex-girlfriend has agreed to help. Curious, Du asks if she’s the same girl from his college years, and Yanchen confirms it plainly, she’s the only girlfriend he’s ever had.
A Difficult Phone Call
That night, Yanchen calls his mother in Beijing, who’s surprised he’d call so late given how it might upset his father. He asks if she’d be willing to look after a young boy for a few days once he’s back in the city, but she refuses outright.
She is worried about how his father would react and unwilling to take responsibility for another family’s child if anything went wrong. Mid-conversation, the household lights flick on, her husband apparently waking up, and visibly frightened, she ends the call abruptly.
A Name Only She Knows
Unable to sleep, Gui Xiao scrolls through her phone, where Yanchen’s saved simply as “ZZZ,” a deliberate choice so no one, not even her own parents, could ever recognize his name. She calls to tell him she’ll be flying back to Beijing in two days and plans to take Xiaonan with her early so she can start preparing him for school properly.
A Question Left Unanswered
Yanchen relays the plan to Mingyu, who’s genuinely moved by how much Gui Xiao’s stepped up to help. Curious, he asks around and confirms she’s still unmarried, convinced her involvement has everything to do with lingering feelings for Yanchen, and urges him to seize this reunion as a real second chance.
Yanchen only responds with quiet melancholy, pointing out they’re not reckless teenagers anymore, and wondering aloud what exactly he’d even have left to offer her now.

Road Home Episode 2 Recap: My Thoughts
Yanchen continues to be this quiet, closed-off type, but a very well respected commanding officer underneath it all, and we finally get some clarity on why he tried to resign in the first place. Commissioner Du won’t let him quit over his captain’s death, choosing instead to transfer him to Tianwen, conveniently close to Beijing, setting up exactly the kind of proximity that could bring him and Gui Xiao back into each other’s orbit.
Something clearly happened between them when they originally split, and I’m hoping we get answers soon, but for now there’s this obvious mutual understanding that neither of them has really let go.
When Yanchen tells Commissioner Du that Gui Xiao is the only girlfriend he’s ever had, that says everything, he’s been, and probably still is, completely devoted to her. She still seems genuinely angry too, especially reflecting on that old fight where she warned him if he ever hung up on her again, there’d be no next time, and it feels like he keeps unknowingly upsetting her in similar ways even now.
She’s hinted this is a pattern, she forgives him the moment he apologizes, they move past it, and then whatever’s actually causing the friction just resurfaces later. I got the sense she was stunned this time when he apologized so quickly and easily, like that’s not something he’s historically been good at, which makes it feel like real, if small, growth.
We also get real insight into just how much pain he carried after their breakup, going all the way out to Qining, into brutal, remote conditions, drinking himself into a blackout just to numb how much he loved her, and clearly still does. I’m looking forward to seeing what this next phase looks like, him relocating to Tianwen, her back in the city, and whatever reconnection that proximity creates.
I know some viewers found the voice-imitation prank a little manipulative, arguing Yanchen’s hostile reaction toward Gui Xiao wasn’t fair given how vulnerable she clearly was navigating this reunion. I lean more toward appreciating it as a classic, almost necessary device though, sometimes it takes exactly this kind of meddling from rowdy, well-meaning teammates to crack the ice between two people this stubborn and quiet.
Jing Boran’s acting here deserves real credit too, particularly how his tough exterior completely falls away the second he realizes she’d been tricked into coming, his eyes tracking her constantly, that lingering gaze making it obvious exactly how deeply he’s still in love with her.
And learning about his mentor’s fear of his father really does ground his stoic, guarded behaviour in possible trauma rather than typical broody-male-lead posturing. It gives both Gui Xiao and us as viewers real reason to extend him some grace for how cold he can come across.
