Ending on Nan Heng secretly coughing up blood is a gut wrenching.

One Last Vow
Under the matchmaker tree, Nan Heng asks Song Yimeng one final time to marry him, vowing to resolve every fear she carries and never fail her. When she hesitates, he offers to annul the engagement instead, but she chooses to brave it anyway, agreeing to marry him.
It’s a huge decision on her part, though the scene itself feels a touch anticlimactic given the weight of it. Less romantic swell than the moment probably deserved.
She asks to skip the wedding entirely, terrified of the scripted “three-way circling stab” scene, the one where everyone dies. Nan Heng, baffled by how absurd the mechanics of it sound, still takes it seriously enough to have Chu Guihong reassigned back to Pingrong to avoid the wedding altogether.
Chu Guihong’s Breaking Point
Furious at the transfer order, Chu Guihong is convinced Nan Heng is systematically destroying everything he has left. He defies it outright and marches the Qianyu Army out through the front gate as a decoy.
He doubles back before dawn, fooling Shang Guanhe’s watch team into guarding the wrong side of the inn. The acting here is genuinely great and unsettling. You can feel exactly how far gone he is. Even hating what he’s become, it’s easy to see the wound underneath the madness.
A Dream Within a Dream Wedding Day Stabbing
Exactly as feared, Chu Guihong shows up mid-procession, calling Nan Heng a killing god and vowing revenge. The script’s typing sound forces her out of the sedan despite every effort to stay put. The infamous three way stab scene plays out again. Except Nan Heng had already planned for it, using Fu Gui to intercept the blow meant for her while taking Chu Guihong’s blade himself as well.
He rewrites the outcome of the “unchangeable” scene in real time. This was easily the most anticipated iconic moment of the whole series, and it genuinely didn’t play out the way I expected, in the best way.
The Fight for His Life
Physicians declare Nan Heng beyond saving, his wounds fatal, unlikely to survive the night. Refusing to accept that as the ending, Song Yimeng completes the full wedding ceremony with him unconscious. She continues the ceremony declaring herself his wife regardless. It’s a genuinely beautiful, devastating scene, the first time her love for him reads as fully, completely real rather than reluctant or conflicted.
Nan Rui arrives with a physician from the Qianyu Army who saves him using unmistakably modern suturing techniques, on the condition Song Yimeng pardons Chu Guihong if it works. The physician’s origins are left deliberately mysterious, just a cryptic “you’ll find out soon” before vanishing, hinting the script itself might be bending in ways even the characters don’t fully understand yet.
A Softening Court
Enraged by the assassination attempt, the Emperor orders Chu Guihong’s arrest for treason. Nan Rui successfully pleads for a delay rather than immediate execution, invoking the late Empress’s love for her nephew. In a small but meaningful beat, the Emperor visits Noble Consort Gao himself for the first time, telling her to rest, another quiet sign of a man finally, slowly softening after a lifetime of cruelty.

Waking Up Together
Nan Heng wakes cured with Song Yimeng asleep beside him. When she stirs to check his wound, he mischievously pretends to still be out cold, only to pull her into an embrace mid-check. She’s furious, tearfully hitting him and demanding he never lie to her again after a sleepless night of worry. It’s a lovely scene, and it’s clear how much he’s simply savouring being cared for after a lifetime of no one doing that for him.
Fu Gui and Shang Guanhe, Feeling Replaced
Both men start feeling sidelined now that Nan Heng is fully absorbed in married life, sent off on made-up errands just to get them out of the room. Commiserating over drinks, Fu Gui proposes they become sworn brothers, even suggesting they vow to give up love entirely to dedicate themselves fully to Nan Heng.
Shang Guanhe balks at that specific vow, clearly already caught up in feelings of his own, and Fu Gui immediately clocks that it’s Song Yiting he means, teasing him about already being called “Second Sister-in-law.” A genuinely funny, oddly touching little side beat about two men grappling with being needed less.
Chu Guihong’s Father
Rescued by villagers in the forest, Chu Guihong wakes to find his own father alive and chopping wood, utterly stunned. His father explains he stayed hidden after Pingrong, believing it easier for his junior officer son to return with dignity than a “fallen” senior one, and tells him plainly that his proudest achievement in life was having him as a son.
The reveal gets stranger from there, his father claims a near-death premonition gave him the ability to see the future, which is apparently how he knew to find this exact village, how he knew events back in the capital, and how he arranged for Physician Zhao’s timely rescue of Nan Heng.
Chu Guihong, sceptical, asks why that power didn’t stop them from losing at Pingrong in the first place, and gets no real answer beyond being told to let go of the past and trust that things in the capital will shift again soon.
A Marriage Finding Its Rhythm
In a playful, intimate scene, Nan Heng needles Song Yimeng with the idea that if he’s the male lead of a story, maybe she’s just as much a fictional character in her own “modern world.” They trade lessons, her teaching him Arabic numerals and English, him stealing a cheeky kiss in the middle of it, before sharing their first fully real, romantic kiss, unguarded and unmistakably genuine this time.
The moment is capped off by an imperial decree formally establishing the Eastern Palace for the newly married Crown Prince, with Fu Gui thrilled at how far he’s come, humble beginnings and all, as they prepare to move into what’s only half-jokingly dubbed the “Male Lead’s Mansion.”

A Tense Family Dinner
Nan Heng and Song Yimeng’s first post-nuptial visit to the Song residence gets swallowed up by an ongoing war between Song Yiting and her mother over Nan Rui versus Shang Guanhe. Madam Song blames Nan Heng for keeping Shang Guanhe around the house in the first place, and though Song Yiting insists her choices have nothing to do with either man, the tension gets bad enough that Nan Heng and Song Yimeng leave early. Song Yiting, worn down, dismisses Shang Guanhe from his role as her companion altogether.
Ting and Shang Guanhe’s Standoff
Song Yiting hands Shang Guanhe his final payment and tells him his job is done now that her sister’s married. He, ever deflecting, offers to spend the money on a zither she likes instead of actually answering her, which only makes her angrier.
She calls him out directly for his indecision about marriage, tired of carrying the pressure alone while he keeps things deliberately ambiguous, and demands a real answer or nothing at all.
Prince Qianyu Returns
Chu Guihong’s father returns to the capital alive, pardoned, and reunited with a thrilled Nan Rui. At the banquet, Nan Heng presses him on how he escaped Pingrong undetected, and gets a strange, evasive story about surviving under enemy armour and years of quiet penance in hiding.
The Scriptwriter Character Reveal
Princ Qianyu is actually the scriptwriter and reveals himself to Song Yimeng, hiding out because Chu Guihong is growing suspicious of him. He explains that every time the couple defies the script, it undoes his work, and with production deadlines looming, he wrote himself directly into the story to fix it.
His goal: force the story back onto its original three mechanisms so that they can return to the real world. Nan Heng always saving her in danger, all seven iconic scenes playing out, and finishing the script’s famous scenes.
Song Yimeng refuses to go, and pinches him hard enough to prove pain is real here, this world isn’t just fiction to her anymore. If they don’t comply, the two of them stay trapped indefinitely, the novel world locked in place around them.
A Close Call and a Warning Sign
Chu Guihong nearly catches his father breaking Qianyu Army code by eating venison, only for a childhood memory to smooth things over just in time. Meanwhile, Nan Heng ends the episode falling suddenly ill, coughing up blood in private and ordering everyone around him to stay quiet about it.
A Dream Within a Dream Episodes 32-34 Recap: My Thoughts
Episode 32 was filled with anticipation and angst. I’d built up so much anxiety about the three-way stab scene. Then Nan Heng outsmarted it, using Fu Gui to intercept the blow, changing the “unchangeable” outcome in real time. It felt like a triumphant middle finger to the whole premise controlling them. That’s the moment I fully believed these two could get a happy ending.
The wedding-while-unconscious scene wrecked me too and was so beautiful. Watching her go through the full ceremony alone, refusing to let his condition stop her, was the first time her love felt completely unguarded. No more script excuses, no more hedging. I’d been waiting a long time for her to just feel something without intellectualizing it away.
Episode 33 was a lovely comedown. Fu Gui and Shang Guanhe commiserating over feeling replaced was genuinely funny and sweet. The real first kiss finally happening felt earned. I laughed out loud at the “Male Lead’s Mansion” plaque, small detail, but it made me smile.
Episode 34 is where my stomach started sinking again, and I mean that as a compliment. The scriptwriter reveal is such a clever swerve, an actual author writing himself into the story to force it back on track. It reframed everything as fragile.
They’re not just fighting fate anymore, they’re fighting a deadline. Ending on Nan Heng secretly coughing up blood completely deflated me. I was ready to relax into a happy stretch, and instead I’m bracing myself again.
